The search for the perfect grip begins again. J-frame "combat" grip

I have a 642, and I have tried the VZ tactical diamond grips for it. I love VZ, but I cannot reccomend them for the 642. The gun is small, and the recoil causes the gun to be uncomfortable to shoot. In addition, until the grips are worn down, they will wear a hole in your pocket if you try to pocket carry.

I'm about to experiment with a set of Altamont combat grips.

I picked up the hogue monogrip today. I went with it instead of the pachmyers based on the price. Haven't shot with em yet but man they feel great. Work great with a speed loader too. I should have got these a long time ago.

What prompted me to get them is I shot some "FBI" loads out of my 638 yesterday with the stock grip.

I love to shoot these that came on my Model 60...

All day, full power 357 mags. Never a complaint. I continue to be amazed at how nice these make this gun shoot.

These, on the other hand, I use all the time for carry. Much smaller, smooth on the draw and then it will fit in a pocket...

Way different grip position. No shock absorber action. Look nice and wear well. BRUTAL to shoot.

Life's all about compromises.

I tossed the rubber grips that came on my 642 and went to the plain old wood J-frame grip, no adapter. For DA shooting, inserting the hand all the way up in the grip gives the best trigger control and best recovery from recoil.

For concealed carry I use Uncle Mike's boot grips on a S&W 36. The rubber is not to grippy like Hogue rubber, and the gun points extremely well for me.

My scandium gun wears Crimson Trace laser grips. As far as comfort goes I can't imagine a WORSE choice, but they do offset that a bit by having a handy laser sight built in.

I'm not a fan of the smaller "boot" grips on the 38's. I do not fel they offer the control of a good 3-finger grip
I have contemplated the CT's but I don't have them on anything else I own. DOn't feel compelled to put them on now either.

Just to follow up, I shot my 638 with the hogue monograph for the first time today. Man I couldn't be happier. At 7 yards I can put 5 shots thru one ragged hole. At 20 yards I can hit one of those orange bouncing targets every time. It really improved my shooting. The are standard velocity 158 gr lswchp.

Makes the fbi loads a lot more tolerable too.
