I personally don't care for rubber grips on a carry gun because they tend to stick to my pockets or clothing. As an alternative, Altamont Co. makes of variety of grips for j-frames at very reasonable prices.

The Altamont's look nice. A definite possibility.

One of the Uncle Mike's I like, that I was following on ebay went for $37, before shipping. Insane.

I stopped in at a local place I don't frequent much, and found a Pachmayr Gripper for the j-frame. "New old stock" -- gun models listed were all older, and the price was also old. Got it, tried it. Comfortable, but big.

My choice for these small framed guns is the Eagle Secret Service grip. They are available in rosewood or ebony, though ebony is pricey.

Other than being made of nice wood and not tacky against clothing, are the grips functionally any different than the stock rubber? They look the same to me.

Stock S&W 642

I took the 642 out to shoot for the first time today.

Ouch. The Remington 125 grain JHP I keep for carry, and my own somewhat milder 158 grain LSWC handloads, were stout, bordering on painful. And S&W makes .357 snubbies that are lighter.

 They sell these guns to women, as first guns?

Yes, my desire for a different grip is sane.

J-grips
I got 22/32HE recently. It had RB Js on it. Couldn't shoot it at all. I have
small hands. Modified old pair of J Targets, whole new ballgame, I can
shoot it know.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425875190.163106.jpg

Grips for my S&W 36 Chief 38 Spl, found the Packmeyer Compact Professional grips were the best for me. They feel just right. I carry the revolver every day. When I first received the grips I was going to return them without even trying them on the gun. Once I installed the grips, they were just perfect for the frame. Good control of the revolver & low profile. Give them a try if you carry.

I've also settled on the Pachmayr "Compac" grips and really like how it covers the backstrap. They are a bit larger, however, than the Uncle Mike's grips which came with my S&W 642. I also have the Pachmayr "Professional" grips which are similar to those original Uncle Mike's. I found these used and were checkered with no emblems.

There is a new product which I haven't yet tried, which are the Hogue "Centennial Polymer Bodyguard Rubber Tamer" grips. These grips look like they would be a good alternative:

Hogue's name for these grips seems rather long!

I took the Hogue off my 642 and replaced it with the Delta Ergo grip
UGLY but SO much more comfortable and it has enabled me to get my shots a LOT closer together. I need to watch which shorts I use for pocket carry as it is a tad longer than the standard Hogue's, but it works.

I can now easily shoot +p without pain and keep my shots COM.

And you can get all three fingers on the grip

" But, they're no longer made, and they can be stupid expensive."

My M-60 came from the factory with UM's combat grip, and as far as I'm concerned they're deschiznit. I've tried others for improved concealability, but they've all been short-lived experiments. UM's boot grip, real S&W wood grips with medallions, Barami Hip-Grip...I liked the Barami the best by far, but .357s were nowhere near as comfy as with UM's combat grip.

Time = money

Buy the UM's once and you'll be set free.

Your J will be as easy to hold as a 1911.

And if you want to sell them in the future, unload them on ebay.

After going through a lot of other grips, I have settled on Pachmayr Compac Grips on my square butt model 36, and also on my round butt model 60 (357)
They absorb recoil the best for me.

I have a set of Badger Round Boot Grips on my model 637 that look good, but not the best for felt recoil.

I put Hogue's new Tamer Grip for J-Frames on one of my 442s. I shot 150 rounds of 130g. American Eagle 38 Special with no pain. They are not as fat as Pachmyer and just a bit longer than the Stock Grips.
