The Perfect Pistol - The G19.

Very good yes; perfect? Hardly.

I agree that the glock19/23 form factor is probably the best for that brand. However, I prefer the second generation frame in the compacts. Count me among those whose fingers don't fit the grooves. On the full-size, yes they do... but on the compact it doesn't work at all.

Perfect? Well, if they could reconfigure the grip and change the trigger. Every time I go from my glocks back to the P7 or Sig or revolver, I am reminded how much the Glock trigger works AGAINST accuracy. Pull weight varies through the stroke, and stacks up right near the end. The geometry actually causes the slide to move up and down during the trigger pull (just look at your slide sometime), and the abrupt "twang" of the striker disturbs the sight picture at the worst possible moment.

I have to work very, very hard to shoot the glocks as accurately as I can shoot my Sigs or Hks with little concentration. On the other hand, if you can master tight groups with a Glock, everything else seems easy.

My first gen. G19 was one of my first pistols and is still my favorite handgun. I put a Hogue handall on it and love it. I also have a G18 mag that may look funny but could pack quite a punch in a small package. It IS my bedside gun, and I can hit clay pigeons (stationary :) ) at 25 yds. without much problem.

In other words:

RIGHT ON!!!!

Not being too knowlegeable about the Glocks, Could someone explain the difference between the generations of G19's. Pros & Cons.

I have been using a pair of Glock 19s for the past couple years - one with a SureFire light mounted on it as a housegun, and the other plain for carry. Both have night sights and several Glock hi-caps each. I switched to the 19 for capacity and reliability, and have not been disappointed. Although I have not had time to shoot them a lot, I found the guns amazingly easy to shoot well. The hi-cap 19 would be hard to beat in a fight. Every couple years I like to completely change systems and at this time I'm considering trading them in on Sigs or H&Ks. I've been reading about these fine guns here on FL.

brad...

Something about your post, while I agree with your assessment, bothered me. Now I know what it is.

Your G19 is almost perfect, but to make it more perfect, you need the original standard capacity 15 round mags. The reduced capacity 10 round mags detract from the original package's capabilities.

My G19 was my first auto, bought in early '87. I enjoy it greatly and will never sell it. It came with 2- 15 rd mags and I added a 17 rd mag. The high capacity in the small package is nice, but the mags do not drop out.

I prefer my .40 P99. Less capacity but feels and looks better. Just slightly bigger, but not much.

Perfect gun? Gimme a break.

The Glock trigger sucks. The grip circumference is too big for all but the hands of relatively large men. The magazine bodies should be made out of steel (like the HK USP), which would help reduce the grip circumference. And the trigger, lord, the trigger. Piece of creepy, mushy, kaka. The factory sights suck.

Glocks are, without a doubt, excellent guns. Durable, reliable, and simple. My first gun was a Glock and I now own 2. But perfect? Gimme a break.

Generation game

The Gen II has no finger grooves and no mounting rails (on the front of the reciever for lights, lasers, etc.) The Gen III has these. For the G23, it is said that the Gen II is not stong enough to convert to .357 sig. MY G19 is a non finger-groove Gen II and my G23 is a Gen. III. I like the early model better, especially in the G19 where there is no issue of barrel changes. - Lee

I always wanted my primary defense pistol to be the perfect combination of form and function. I preferred "the looks" "the style" and "cache" of HK's, Sigs, and Walthers but for me the Glock (23) became my pragmatic choice. For defensive shooting I simply have more confidence in Glocks than any other. And that's something no one can argue with, not even me.:D

I keep wanting to go back to a Sig, HK or Walther but for me the not so glamourous Glock became The ONE.

For defense the G19,G23, or G30 all very SOLID CAN'T GO WRONG CHOICES in my book.

Perfect? In my case, a resounding Yes!

I second M1911's thoughts. Ive owned three G19's at various times, and my current one is a finger-groove model. It shoots fine, is reliable with most bullet types I have tried, shoots to point of aim but isn't a tack-driver, has a manageable but not fantastic trigger.

In other words, it works. Is it perfect? No. Not even my cherished 1911 is perfect! But I would recommend any new owner try one, just to see if if it's a little more "perfect" in their hands than mine.

I got a 19 cause it was my first "real" pistol. For some reason I couldn't produce good groups with it. Then a friend got a 26 and it actually was more accurate than my 19. I wound up getting rid of the 19 (the only gun I have ever gotten rid of) and got a 26. I also have a 21 that I really love. I have others but I really like my glocks. The 19 was a dissapointment but the others made up for it. The only thing I don't like about glocks is the aversion to lead bullets but that is easily remedied. I LOVE the trigger! I think it all boils down to personal preference and what you want from the gun. I was very surprized at the difference in performance between the 19 and 26. I think I just got a "lemon" 19. No, the capacity is not the same but I can get more mags for the 26 if I want and I like the small package. The only "bad" thing about the 26 is it's a 9mm but they make the sub-compact 45, too bad I only have finite bucks to spend on guns!

The glock has proven itself..no doubt about that but fire the HK USPc and the Walther P99 in polymer and you will see better class
weapons. Of course adjusting for price the glock is just as good, but our lifes are worth more a one or two hundred price difference.

Try the Sig 228 also, although heavier, you will be very impressed.

You say that only because you have never felt a Steyr M9 or M40 in your hand before. If you did, you'd be singing a different tune.

Also, you are not left handed, if you were, glock's mag release that sticks out the size of china, would draw blood from your hands.

Some say, "You can file it" but then if I did, why don't I just start modifying the hell out of it??

My Steyr M40... from my cold dead hands...

Twoblink,

Please do not give advice to people that is pure crap.

I am lefthanded, I carry and shoot regularly a G19 and G26. I have put hundreds of rounds of Federal HS 124 +P+ and have NEVER had a single problem with the mag release.

I have shot thousands of rounds of blazer and other range ammo through both guns and have not had any trouble either.

There might be other reasons to not own a Glock, but the reason you give is not a valid one.
