The first time you held the pistol you have always wanted...

Well my first time was a mixed bag of emotions. I have always wanted a Berreta 92 since my child hood and watching the leathal weapon series.

A few months ago i went to the gun store and there sat one, and i decided to finealy pick one up and see it up close. Well it was beautifull and large just as i was expecting. THen my heart sank as i realized that i could barely operate the safety/decocker with my thumb. The grip was just a little to big in the webbing of my thumb area and it felt like a let down.

Now having gone back and looked again, its still large, still beautifull and still difficult to operate the lever, but that hasnt changed how i feel about it. Im going to get one and figure out how to train around that little hick up.

So how did you feel the first time you saw and held your dream/favorite pistol?

I had the same experience with the Beretta 92. I always wanted one, then I fired one and hated it.

That same day, I fired a Springfield TRP and I've loved it ever since. It just took me ten year before I owned one

1979

My dad said he would buy me a gun as a matriculation gift for graduating from the University of Texas. I held that royal blue python in my hands with a big smile.

I lost my dad to prostate cancer in 2005. Thanks for reminding me again what a great father I had. I still have the python he gave me back in 1979.

Lol did everyone want a Beretta 92?... I thought it was just me.

A friend of mines father is a prison guard and as such has firearms in his home. One day my friend, who has been "trained" by his father on gun safety, asked us if we wanted to see his dads guns. We said yes and he brought out a revolver and a Beretta 92. At the time it had been the only gun I liked or even knew about from movies or what have you and it was a very nice experience.

I haven't shot one yet and at the time didn't have near the knowledge of firearms I do now which is still very limited. So I don't know how it actually felt in my hand or for that matter if I could reach the safety etc etc. I do plan on buying one someday though as it was and still is my favorite looking pistol. Hopefully, it is just as fun to shoot as it was to hold for the first time.

P38

Ever since I can remember, I had always wanted a Walther P38. When I was a child in the late 60's I can remember my dad talking about them, I guess that's what got me wanting one. Through the years I had built them up to almost mythical status in my mind, making them into some super accurate marvel of engineering and machining. I finally bought one, 4 years ago actually. It felt great in my hand, the single stack thinness and the perfect grip angle, man I was hooked. Until I shot it. No big deal. My CZ's are better.

Since around 15 I wanted a BHP.

When I finally was able to buy one (early-mid 20's) I went to a LGS with the intent on buy a 9mm. My heart was set on a BHP but I knew logically I needed to at least hold others.

I handled about 5 guns with the BHP being the last one I handled.

As soon as I grabbed it.... I instantly knew..... my face looked like this :D and I bought it.

Guess I am from the other end of the spectrum...Never lusted after a handgun...They all have simply fallen in my lap over time by chance or inheritance...

Now that I have a 'couple', do I sit and gaze longingly at the deep shine while I lovingly caress the gentle curves and......

Sorry...

What was the question?

I had a similar experience with the 92 except when I held it, I loved it immediately. It felt great holding that big heavy gun. I had always wanted one too. And yes, I'll admit it, it was Lethal Weapon that got me started on it "That's some serious sh** you carry there ... 9mm Beretta, carries 15 in the mag and one in the pipe, wide open ejection port, no failure to feeds ..." man, Danny Glover did that line well!

Anyways, that got me started on the 92 along with so many great reviews. I went in looking at other guns and at the Taurus PT92 (which I could afford). They had a Beretta 92FS in the case. I asked to see the 92FS and when I was done I said thanks and left the store. Came back when I had enough money for the 92FS. Several years later now and it's still my favorite gun of all. I would say the grip is a tad on the large side for me but still feels great in my hand and man, I can really shoot well with this gun.

I suppose the closest I ever came to that was the first handgun I ever bought which was a Smith & Wesson, Model 19.

I remember seeing one of the cover of "Guns and Ammo" magazine when I was a teenager, and thinking "That's what a handgun is supposed to look like."

It was years later before I got one. Kept it a couple of years, then traded it off for something else.

I've always been a fickle owner.

I'd like to have a Python, but I doubt I'll ever buy one. Gotta have something to want.

A couple of years back,,,

I decided I wanted a Wonder-Nine.

I belong to a rifle & pistol club,,,
Our members are fairly free with their guns,,,
If you ask them nicely they will almost always let you hold/shoot a gun.

I had a list of guns I wanted to try,,,
So I kept my Model 629 around to trade shooting with,,,
I was slowly working my way through the list when a man came out with a CZ-75B.

We chatted and I asked him if I could hold it,,,
He lay the pistol in my hand and the clouds parted,,,
A bright ray of golden sunlight bathed my hand in it's warmth,,,
An angelic choir started singing in my ears as I raised the gun to firing stance.

One magazine of 9mm later I was convinced this was the pistol for me,,,
It fit my smallish K-frame hands like they had molded it for me,,,
I was able to put 16 rounds in the bullseye at 10 yards.

Needless to say I put a 75B and a 75B Kadet on order within days of that event.

I have wanted a Hämmerli 120 for at least 40 years. All kind of handguns have come and gone, including the Hämmerli 152, but the 120 is still on the wish list.

I have never even seen one in the flesh.

You know, if the 92 is too big, you might consider a CZ75. I find these similar to the 92 (in looks, feel, and function). The finish and craftsmanship is not quite as nice as Berettas, but they are very good guns and have a smaller grip that really feels good in the hand. (I see Aarond plugged this one too) . Another one I would suggest is the Stoeger Cougar (still a Beretta, as Beretta owns Stoeger and they designed the Cougar). The Cougar has identical controls to the 92FS and is a lot like it except with a shorter rotating barrel. IMO, it's the second best looking gun out there (behind the 92FS :) ). The grip on the Cougar is a little smaller than the 92's and it really fits my hand well, feels great in it. For me the 92 is a good fit, the Cougar is a perfect fit. The Cougar is easily my second favorite gun.
All 3 of these guns are insanely reliable.
Cheers, Phil

I was never really a handgun kind of guy untill I set eyes on the S&W 500. The first time I held it I knew that one day I was going to have it. It was the 8 3/8 inch barrel with perminant conpensater model. After two years I finally had enough money left after getting taxes and bought it, along with a couple boxes of ammo. Took it to the range the next day and fell in love all over again. This is also why I started reloading. 50¢ a round is alot better then factory prices lol.

I too fell for the 92FS. A local PD that I worked with at a part time job carried one. I could never get used to the saftey on the 92. So now I own a Taurus 99AFS, 17+1 great shooting gun. My favorite line from Lethal Weapon was, "Sleep? Who Sleeps"? My other favorite gun was the Colt Python 6" in that deeeep blue.

Never really felt that way with a pistol. I did feel that with a revolver though, a single action .357 Magnum. Bought it on the spot too. But I always did want a 45-70 and then a 10 gauge, guess what I bought when I found them?

Always liked (you guessed it) the Beretta 92FS also -

Held one at the White Elephant (local firearms / outdoor store) it felt perfect in my hand.... it oozed quality and the controls all felt like a meticulous machinist wanted them to have the perfect feel...

Don't ask me why, but then I went and found an old German SIG P226 and bought it instead. The more I shoot the P226, the more I like it. I just might have to satisfy my curiosity & scratch the Beretta itch someday, tho

I'd wanted a g20 for some time. But once I got one I just didn't care for it. I told myself I could get over it's looks but I was wrong. It shot great and felt good in my hand...all well.

My other want from this year was a p226. I finally held one and it was just too large a grip for me so I didn't get it. I didn't know of the e2 grips at the time. I did end up with a 229 about a month later on a trade, but haven't invested in the kit or short trigger to make it "ideal"
