The best hand gun that money can buy

I also recommend the Dan Wesson Pistol Pac in .357, basically gives you 4-5
revolvers for the price of one.
Now that would probably be my holy grail of revolvers. Make mine HV style.;)

In autos it would first be an unfired NIB Detonics Scoremaster in either .45 ACP or .451 D-mag. After that, a NIB LAR Grizzly in .45 Win mag. Unlikely in either case, but I can dream.

Best Gun Money Can Buy

IMHO, get a Swenson .45. The genuine article. The late Mr. Swenson was a genius, and he modified stock Colt 1911 and Commanders to improve both accuracy and reliability. He had an extensive option list, but my personal favorites would include the adjustable sights from the S&W K frame revolver on a full size 1911. Mr. Swenson also did a polish and blue job that was a real work of art. Prices for these gems are all over the spectrum, but you will have a treasure of great utility and growing value to collectors. Good luck with your search!

I've never seen that Damascus 1911 - I really like it!!! And, I'm not a huge 1911 fan - just really like the way that Damascus 1911 was done.

For something a little different than custom 1911's, take a look at the Sig X-Five: http://www.handgunsmag.com/featured_handguns/sigxfive_011306/

I like this gun better than the P210 due to it's capacity both in 9mm and 40S&W.....not that I don't like the P210....

Most elegant - and probably best in its class: S&W mod. 15 (any barrel length)
9mm semi-auto : SIG 210-6
.357 Mag : S&W mod. 27 either 3.5 ",4" or 6"
No, KORTHs are certainly NO better than , say Manurhin MR 73 or the finer S&W mod 27's (or even 15's) ; the 2 I ever shot were fitted so tight their cylinders jammed after shooting 12-18 factory jacketed-bullet rounds.
Hell I've even seen Pythons do better.

I'm gonna throw the Sphinx 3000 into the mix. The cadillac of CZ-75 clones; a Swiss interpretation of a rugged, reliable Commie gun. Best of all worlds IMHO.

This question can go around and around for days...without an answer.

Do you want one of the most valuable guns that you can actually use to carry, target shoot and defend your life? Find a mint condition original S&W Registered Magnum. That should blow most of your budget right off the bat.

Want a wonderful revolver that will make friends jeleous? Get a mint Python. You'll have alot of money left over.

Do you simply want to spend money for the sake of spending money? Get a documented WWII Engraved Walther PP or PPK. Bring more money.

Money no object? Get yourself a Gov't Model...have Bill Wilson make you a Master grade pistol out of it and then send it off to be fully engraved and gold filled. Again, bring more money.

Want an example of one of the finest working guns ever made? Get a S&W Model 10 and spend a whole lot on dinner and Broadway show.

Want a good example of one of the finest current Combat guns? Get an HK USP.

Another Classic? Colt Single Action.

Wanna spend the most money for a current production gun? Get a Korth.

Money and "value" either as a user or collectible don't always have to run hand in hand. You can spend as much as you want to, and, not necessarily get the most reliable gun for your money.

You COULD buy a Fully engraved, Gold filled S&W Chiefs special, but, mechanically, it would be no better than a box stock Chief Special.

I used to think my Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan 454 Casull was my dream gun but i have to say that my 1911 has so much class.

Ways to spend some money (focusing in this case on "new" firearms):

* Ed Brown 1911 Special Forces (5") w/ bobtail, or
* Ed Brown Executive or Kobra Carry (commander 4" bobtails), then have Ted Yost go after it.
* Wilson Combat--as someone else(s) posted-- and add EB Bobtail
...Then ditto above, if compelled to spend more for the ultimate, have Ted Yost "finish" it.
* Contract with Ted Yost from outset for custom 1911.
(Note: problem with most "gourmet" custom shops is lead time..not for the impatient or those needing instant gratification. EB, Wilson and others are stellar "enough" for most folks out of the box. Tune further later if you feel a need if you have to have it now.)
* Have Colt custom shop build and engrave (if that's your thing) new SAA, with "blackpowder" (chamfered) .44 Special and .44-40 cylinders (or .45LC/.45ACP combo), add antique ivory or other custom grips to your liking. Finish off with tune/action job by Bob James.
* US Firearms (USFA) Pre-War Single Action (Colt SAA clone), same cylinders options as above, Turnbull case hardened frame and hammer, add one piece ivories (etc) and Bob James action/tune. Unless you find the customized Colt of your dreams in a shop or online, USFA's the way to go if you gotta have it now (not talking about additional embellishments like engraving)
* Contract with Bowen, Harton, Clements, Reeder, etc, for a custom Ruger single action per another poster's suggestion. ..using older flat-top "three screw" (or in keeping with my "new" theme, same frame current 50th Anniversary .357 or New Vaquero frames). 44 Special conversion (even with current Lipseys limited production) would be my choice...or customize the Lipsey's .44 right off. Otherwise, pick from a whole range of standard calibers and semi-esoteric caliber conversions, the latter including .41 Mag, or multi-cylinder combos of .38-40/.40S&W/10mm (triple cylinders), .32-20/.327 Fed Mag/.32 H&R -- two or three cylinders, etc.
* Pre lock S&W 65 Lady Smith (unique combo among fixed sight K's: 3", full lug, satin stainless .357), then have Bowen (or whoever) tune. Custom grip (somebody posted some gorgeous "silverblack" wood grips on TFL recently) and/or engrave to your liking, again if that's your thing. S&W 66 Combat Magnum very similar configuration on same frame (except gloss stainless, though you can have anything beadblasted if you like the lo-gloss look)...if preferring adjustable sights. Although not designed (it turned out) to take a steady diet of hot, lighter grained (125 etc) .357, they are fine with the tried-n-true 158s and are still IMO the nicest all-around choices of the most recent but still pre-lock medium (K) frame Smiths. Breaking my "new" criteria here, but these are not yet ancient and it is still possible to find these NIB or LNIB.

Start with a python (from 1-2K). Try to get an older model without much use. Then shoot awhile. Once you spend some time in the gun community, then you will probably want to get a 1911 of some sort. (excellent suggestions above).

Just wait to make that decision until you know a bit more about semi-autos, and that will take some time.

You will never regret the python for a revolver choice, and it will retain its value if you do ever decide to sell it.

Good aesthetics and quality can be found pretty easily. You should find a pistol with a proven track record, in a caliber that suits your purpose, and a finish grade that suits your taste. Most people will try to tell you why you should want what they themselves have shelled out serious cash for, but a good gun is a good gun, and aesthetics are personal. A good classic would be the 1911, and there are lots of finely engraved, beautifully finished pieces out there to choose from (they just aren't very unique). There are some custom gun makers who can make a one of a kind gun that fits you, and has a look that fits your taste, at a hefty price. Pick your poison, but weigh the trade-offs before you write the check.

If "best" means best looking......

Revolver: Colt Python .357 w/4in. bbl. in blue or stainless (your preference).

Pistol: Kimber Pro CDP.

Those are/were production guns. I don't know that much about what is available along the custom lines, so I can't be of help there.

These two, in my eye are two of the best looking handguns that have been made.

If "best" means most reliable (will go bang when you need it to the most).

Revolver: Any of the K or L frame Smiths

Pistol: Glock, Sig, or HK

Just my take on it.

This is like asking someone else to pick your spouse. In the end, only you can make a choice like this. I like my neighbor's wife but I doubt I could live with her.:p
