ArmySon - I think I'll work with you

Preservefreedom - Seek other employment

Scandinavian - I think we've bonded.

The reason for the question is probably obvious. After 3 years in the land of the cramped and unarmed, the topic of relocation had cropped up. I have already been approached by an American recruiter who wants me to get my visa processed, a procedure obviously designed to dissuade potential emigrés, talk about officialdom gone mad. I work in IT and my job here could be summarised as follows :

37 hour week with working at home permitted on an unrestricted basis.
6 weeks annual leave with upto 9 days carried over.
no sick leave restrictions unless more than 6 months taken in one year in which case you get medical retirement.
flexible working hours allowing the unlimited use of TOIL or time off in lieu, i.e. extra hours worked.
My job will also allow me to take a sabbatical of 1 to 5 years during which time I can pretty much do as I please.

The wife is wary, she has very bad experiences of the US in a work sense. When she came here, she was told she worked TOO hard by her fellow workers and had to slow up a little. Maybe its genetic with you Yanks, but something certainly programs you with the work ethic. Anyways, you've given me plenty to think about, I'll show your posts to herself and see what she thinks.

Much appreciated,

Mike H

Mike,

Right now, I get 100hrs paid vacation, 5 paid personal days, plus the time between Xmas and newyears.

There is no such thing as job security here, but why worry about things like that ;)

Can't quite cut the socialist "saftey net" of the homeland??? There is no such thing as a free lunch, you're paying quite a bit for those things.

5 weeks & 2 days of vacation, 1 week of personal, 2 weeks of sick and 11 paid holidays. But I've worked here 26 years, too. John

After 1 year, 2 weeks vacation.
After 5 years, 3 weeks
After 10 years, 4 weeks
After 20 years, 5 weeks.

Vacation days are allocated monthly, and usable immediately. (5 weeks = 2.09 days/month)

Additionally, there are 11 paid holidays, 3 of which may be taken at employees' discretion for birthday, annivarsary, whatever.

Sick leave, short and long term disability, policies, etc., are too long to include here.

Unless you're union or a member of a protected class - female, minority, over 40 (YEAH!) or whatever, you can be fired easily in most states. In my company, assuming there's no major downsizing of a department, I've only heard of people being fired for safety, security, or harassment violations, as well as criminal actions.

We get two weeks paid vacation after a years service, three weeks after 5 years. In addition we get 6 sick days and 6 paid holidays. And yes our company is notorious for releasing people with no notice. Mark / FL

I'm a police officer. My department is civil service, not "At Will". While there are quite a few automatic firing offenses, (Sexual harassment for example) every firing goes before a review board. Far more common is time off without pay. No one gets fired without very good reason, and more than likely, criminal prosecution. Vacation time accrues on an hourly basis, as does sick time. It works out to about 4 weeks of each a year for me. (Senority) Personal days are unlimited, but come out of your sick time. Vacation accumulation is unlimited, I have about 6 months currently. Sick time is capped at 6 weeks. If you need more other officers can donate theirs. Schedule is 4 on, 3 off. Overtime averages about 15 hrs a week. You can have all the overtime you can stand. There are no holidays due to the nature of the job, however it's double pay for that day. Married guys usually trade shifts with the single officers for important ones such as Christmas with their kids.

For the past 3 years I have been working about 4-5 hours a day 5 days a week, took off the days I wanted to, as long as the week's work was done.

No benifits unless I paid for them.

For sick leave, I just had to look in the mirror.

The government is my silent partner, and largest expense.

I'm self-employed. But that's changing for a while anyway... then I'll go back to it...

I think it varies at each company and location. If people are hard to find in the high tech or other types of employment, the better the benefits are.

Normally you have 2 weeks vacation, 5 sick days, 10 holidays. Some companies give more, some less.

Your considered very lucky or possibly have a government job if you only put in 8 hours 5 days per week.

You also sign "employment at will" statements with most companies, so, yes you can get fired quickly and for little cause. The most bizarre thing in the computer world lately centers around business partners.

I worked for a telecom startup that used CISCO gear in their network. Because of the companies so called affiliation with CISCO, I could not apply or discuss employment with CISCO. This is only one example, there are usually several companies that have business partner relationships. JD Edwards is one of the worst for them. Of course, your told you can quit then apply/interview....Quite an effective method to keep the salaries down.

I worked for Cisco too, as a Consultant. I am not supposed to refer to Cisco on my resume.
I think Cisco Systems only has like 7 real employees and the rest are contractors with the same agreement.

Now I work for Nortel Networks.

When I was your age, we didn't have shoes...in the winter, we wrapped barbed wire around our feet for traction! And we liked it!

Scandinavian, I laughed my rear off when I read your post, I kind of thought it was Python-esque when I read it.

Mike H :
I work in IT for an oil company. After 8 years of service, I get 120 hours of vacation time (it goes up to 160 after 10 years), 10 paid holidays, and 40 hours of sick leave. My nominal work time is 9 hours/day for 8 days of a 2 week period, then an 8 hour day, then every other Friday off. We call it 9/80 (9 days with 80 hours total). I generally put an extra half hour or hour (uncompensated) every work day, and will work 4-8 hours on a weekend every 6 weeks or so, also uncompensated. I can be terminated for no reason at any time, but as it was pointed out that works both ways. I've been through a lot of layoffs here, seen some pretty good people get let go in all departments, and seen some real stinkers let stay. That's just the way it goes and we don't let it bother us.

I just got back from a 3 week stint in the company's UK office in London. They have a setup much like you described. They also get to drink beer at lunchtime, which is a hangin' offense in this office.

However, note this: the folks in the U.K. office worked just as hard and just as smart as we do here, just didn't believe highly in overtime and weekends. As a matter of fact, they seemed to be a little less prone to rumor mongering than us, but it may have been that they didn't trust me enough yet to let me in on office secrets.

When I was your age, we couldn't GET barbed wire so we used old razor blades, AND WE LIKED IT.

I like my SAAB convertible (purchased used).
Work hard, live long.

Mike,

I work for a wireless company. They have recently restructured their Customer Care compensation package.

80 hrs vacation
5 floating holidays
9 personal days (will now be paid for any unused days at end of year)
8 (?) holidays
annual and Christmas bonuses, if warranted by company/location performance

Employment is technically "at will", but employees are rarely, if ever, fired without good reason, like habitual lateness or being rude to customers.

Scandinavian, I apologize for my overeaction. I had a bad day at my "Oh so great" job and unnecesarily took it out on you. I erased the post and promise not to respond so irrationally in the future.

I’m self-employed:

0 days off with pay.

My employees:

0 days vacation, sick days or other time off with pay.

If you work too slow you’re fired. If you screw up more then on occasion you’re fired. If you can’t come in on time don’t come in at all because … you’re fired. If we’re slow (i.e. no orders) clock out and go home. If we’re knee deep in orders work over time and come in on Saturday. If you can talk and work go for it. If talking slows you or anyone else down shut your mouth and get back to work. If I don’t like your radio station change it or change jobs. If you want security buy a gun. If you’re looking for loyalty get a dog. If you want a job in the lowest paying county in the lowest paying state in the US then call me as I currently have an opening … er … um or I will in a day or two.
