Taurus Question

I think I understand. It's kind of like when I see "Taurus" in the title of a new post. I'm disappointed without even reading it.

Cause I know it's going to lead to trash talk.

you said it LOL i wonder sometimes ...............:D

I love the sweeping generalizations about Taurus pistols and owners by non-Taurus owners. Kind of reminds me about the "observations" that the media is making about the health care protesters. Honestly, I don't think that the vast majority of the Taurus critics are owners or know any Taurus owners.

I was an SF trooper in a different life, grew up hunting and shooting in West Texas and have had my share of handguns and rifles over the course of my nearly fifty or so years. Anybody that carried an issue M1911 back in the day probably doesn't remember the soft halo glow and the tight fit, and yet those same guns and makers are now things of beauty and legend. I'm not a new gun owner, and I have recommended Taurus to my shooting buddy and neighbor, who's a Korean war vet, and has owned a pistol or two.

As far as the quality of Taurus vs other makers, take a look at the recall stickies at the top of the forum. Does recall mean that S&W/Walther/Ruger and Colts are POS? No, it means that manufacturing is a process done by men, not angels. I'm down to two pistols in my safe, a Detonics 9-11-01 in 45 ACP and a Taurus PT1911 in .38 Super. I'm happy as a pig in s#!t with both guns. If you all don't find that to your liking, you can kiss my @$$.

EDIT: Well, ok, that last part was a little over the top. Let's just say I'm happy with Taurus, and although I know it's not a Sig or a Colt, I didn't pay the brand name premium, and the gun has yet to let me down.

My opinion is you get what you pay for. While I don't own a Tarus, and will not own one. My understanding is that they are basically a throw away gun. It breaks don't waist your time with the customer service dept, just scrap it. On the other hand you might get a good one.

Not in defense of Taurus in particular, but that's a myth. All kinds of examples of products that cost more but deliver less than lower cost products..including firearms.

My understanding is that they are basically a throw away gun.

That's the other problem. Your understanding is not first hand experience. "Throw away" is just not reality. I own Smith, Colt, Ruger, SA, & Taurus. My Taurus frame is T6 6061 aluminum. The barrel is 416 grade stainless. Very good quality springs and other parts from good tool steel. No, they are not really made from pot-metal.:p

Taurus may or may not be the best on the market, but throw away...not hardly.

Sold my taurus's at a loss. Smiled while doing it glad to get something for them and not owning them any more. I don't deny that many are probably fine but I have no interest in them.

Wow! All I wanted to know was why you don't see Taurus firearms for sale used if everyone is getting rid of them. I knew my question would open the can, but never imagined anything like this.

(I am not selling mine).

Taurus threads always...always invoke lots of emotion. If you want a bench mark just try starting a thread about Glock issues.:p

I like Taurus & Glock threads. Without them most gun forums would be boring. Well, in case of emergency we always have .45ACP VS 9mm to keep us entertained.:D

I had a PT 92 Taurus, Cracked slided 1st time, broken firing pin second time
JUNKKKK

I had a Taurus 1st Gen 24/7 45ACP failed to feed ammo reliably, Junk

I had a Taurus Pro 24/7 40 Cal and the rails were off center and grated steel like cheese, JUNK

I had one 605 jammed on the 8th round shot. Cylinder locked up tight. Sent it to Taurus and the said I needed to clean it more. (AFTER THE 8TH ROUND) JUNK

Broke down and ordered another 605, cylinder lock again......JUNK JUNK JUNK

I do have a Taurus 66, had it for 20 years, good gun

I guess one out of six, makes me just lucky. Taurus by in large is JUNK.

I've had my Taurus PT-92c for well over 20 years and 15K rounds. No issues with this gun whatsoever!

(My Taurus model 85 snubbie revolver was a different story.)

TR, you have had a lot of problems with Taurus. I guess I am the most surprised with the PT92. I always felt it was one of their better made pistols.

I can't answer about all the failures you have had with Taurus pistols, but just to put a little perspective, many brands of semi's (at times) have feeding problems. My experience is that feeding problems almost always have simple solutions. Now rails off center and cracked slide is certainly a major failure.

Mine is a Taurus 94 collecting dust in the safe.

Make that 2 :o

However I have recently bought a used Taurus 450, as I was looking for a large bore conceal carry revolver and this one was priced right. Haven't had the time to shoot it yet so I cant yet comment on dependability.

As I said my Taurus semi has been reliable, but I must admit I am surprised at how many complaints I hear on Taurus revolvers. I don't have any statistics...just my overall impression. But I expect revolvers to always come out on top when compared to semi's for reliability. I have Smith, Colt, & Ruger revolvers, and they are simply more reliable than any of my semi's. So I am surprised when I hear a high number of complaints about Taurus revolver failures.

BTW, not saying I am not comfortable carrying my 1911 or other semi. Just saying my semi's don't match my revolvers for overall reliability.

I bought a Taurus 24/7 Pro in .40 S&W as my first handgun. With about 600 rounds through it, I've only had one FTF, which I attribute to limp wrist. I've never had any other problems with the gun and it shoots great. Based on my experience, I would definitely recommend any NEW Taurus.

I will probably end up selling mine only because it's too big and heavy for concealed carry (I am only 5'8" 160lbs). My fiance will kill me if I buy another gun for CCW right now without recouping some cost from my Taurus.

I just purchased a Taurus Pt 24 7 in the .40 cal. I can pick it up from Weds on next week (damn waiting period). Now I gotta find a good holster for it. Any ideas?

Also can anyone recommend good ammo?

I don't have a good holster for mine because the gun is too big and heavy for me to want to carry it CCW.

For HD ammo, I use Federal Hydra Shok 135 Grain...I've never had a problem firing them. For range ammo, I use either Federal or Blazer Brass FMJ 180 Grain (purchased from Walmart).

I looked around a lot before getting my 1911.. and I looked at all the features and the pro/con's of them all...and i have never had any issue (2000+rds) thing is a tank.. I carry it as my CCW and i had it on me in my car reck which i was ejected out of my rear hach(ford explorer) and slid for about 50 feet.. the gun at some point came off my hip and ended up in the grass 30 feet from me.. found it later after the reck, not one thing wrong with it at all.. sights stayed correct, nothing chipped/cracked or bent.. took it all apart cleaned it, shot perfect..

I know there are a lot of people that hate them, and will tell you so many bad things about them.. I can agree with some of their products, but not this one..
