Taurus Question

This will probably open the worm can again but I have to ask. If Taurus handguns are as bad as some people say they are, why aren't there a whole bunch of them for sale on this or other forums for cheap? You rarely see them for sale used.

Because many end up as object lessons for their buyers.

They send them in for warranty work, wait MONTHS, and only sometimes do they return them fixed. Might need a second or third trip.

In that time, the buyer (who one week prior to purchase felt squeezed trying to save $350 for a Taurus and "just couldn't save any more money because it would take too long") went out and bought a Ruger/S&W/Glock/something else and has been happily using it without issue.

So the clunker sits in the safe or sock drawer as a "dammit, I shouldn't have cut corners" reminder.

Mine is a Taurus 94 collecting dust in the safe.

The fact that more aren't for sale might mean that they are purchased and put away by people who rarely shoot. But I suspect it just means they work about as well as anything else.

Because many of us have moral character

And refuse to sell broken junk to unsuspecting buyers. You might also consider that many knowledgeable buyers are wise to their poor quality and avoid buying them in the first place. Also, they have very little resale value. Lets say you spend $350 on a gun that does not work right. When you go to trade it in, the buyer, knowing what they are, offers you $70 dollars for it. Are you going to sell it or throw it in the bottom of the safe like others suggest?

BTW, why ask a rhetorical question? If you think they are great, have at 'em. But don't say you have not been warned.

I got a Taurus to have a gun,and I could barely afford it even as cheap as they are.I'd rather just keep it than maybe get 100 bucks for it on a trade for a better gun. They aren't the best quality, but I believe you get what you pay for with it.They do the job.

Not a rhetorical question at all. Just curious why, if they are as bad as people claim. Why would you keep them amd just throw them in the safe. If I had something I wasn't satisified with, I'd get rid of it even if it meant taking a loss.

say you bought a $350 taurus stinker. and you want to sell it. Well almost anyone can walk into an academy and buy a new one since they are so plentiful and available. so how much would you sell yours for? if you ask for 300, most peopke would be like, might as well pay the extra 50 for a new one. and if you ask for 250, you just took a 100 loss

also, a lot of the threads i read went like
"it broke, and i sent it in, and they took 2 weeks. as soon as i got it back, i got rid of it (implying sold it)"

in light of that, would you buy a used taurus?

If Taurus handguns are as bad as some people say they are...

On a recent thread by riggins_83, twenty-five persons on this forum voted the following in a Taurus poll:

Horrible experiences! Would never.. ever.. touch one again.

In reality, that's not many persons. They are, however, a vocal group.

In answer to your question then... Few totally unhappy persons = few guns for sale for cheap.

Use caution when taking advice from folks on forums, including me. :) You never truely know why they may have it out for a particular brand, or why they defend a certain brand. For example, I could be chiming in because all of my firearms are Taurus... and, I have stock in Taurus... and, my last name is Taurus... and, I was born on May 1st so my zodiac sign is Taurus. However, none of those are true. I've only had one Taurus firearm, and I still have it. I have no vested interest in Taurus. I just dislike seeing a brand dissed so much, perhaps based on limited experience, and by the same folks. I've mentioned a time or two that a few of my firearms had problems... Ruger 10/22 (wiggly trigger housing), Marlin 1894 (jam-o-matic), Springfield (couldn't hit the proverbial barn door). But, you won't see me trashing those brands every chance I get as I know the majority of folks have had good experiances with them. JUST AS THE MAJORITY HAVE HAD WITH TAURUS.

Remember, this forum is not made up of your typical pool of gun owners. We're exceptionally picky about things. I doubt that the average gun owner would make a big deal about the firearm problems I mentioned above. But to me, I expected better. My point is... take what you hear on this forum with a grain of salt. Many comments are based on experience, some on sour grapes, some on a combination of the two.

P.S. - Why did I purchase a Taurus, anyway? Well, it wasn't the price. I can afford better brands if I save up for a bit. Actually, I just wanted to see how they were. I've been pleased so far. If for some reason I decide that I can't stand it any longer, I'll definitely sell it. Even for a loss. I don't want something in my safe constantly reminding me that I don't like it. :)

I agree not all Taurus are lemons. I own two that I've had no problems with. As was posted most people say that the one's they have had problems with will be sold as soon as they come back from repair. Where are they? Once again I'd rather take a loss then keep something I'm not happy with.

Great post SW620, I couldn't agree more. Must have been responding at the same time. I like yours better.

Do a search here ( or any gun forum ) and read all you could ever want about Taurus "quality" and "customer service" and then make up your own mind. It shouldn't take you long to reach a conclusion

The question was not about quality or customer service. It was about why dissatisified owners or others aren't offering to sell. Being from Ohio I knew Brutus had a lot of BIG wheapons, I just didn't know they were Taurus.

I have firearms by Colt, S&W, Ruger, Marlin, Mauser, Taurus and others. Nothing wrong at all with my M85 and Millennium Pro, they work and they offered a lot for the money. Got my M85 in 1994 and it's never been any trouble. A few years ago I happened to be at Sportsman's Warehouse when they had a sale on the PT 111 so I inspected it and liked it. I didn't have a small 9mm or a poly gun so bought it. Glad I did.

BTW, I like Taurus, mine aren't for sale.

I buy them as i feel sorry for the High-Point owners and want to give them a break from all the bad mouthing and let them bash my Taurus.

Actually im tired of defending my group of Taurus's i dont even like to talk about them as much.I too can afford more expensive handguns, but choose not to.As a matter of fact i picked my Taurus not for the name, nor the price.I liked the model design and features mostly. My PT745 is arguably the smallest .45 acp in current production with a manual saftey.

Im about to buy a PT709 as noone else makes a 9mm that small with a manual saftey. Its just a bonus that they cost less and all match my other guns.

I've sold all of my Taurus firearms...so I guess I've contributed to the used Taurus handgun market.

1 - 605
1 - 94
1 - 85
1 - PT 111
1 - 905
1- 650 blued
1 - 650 stainless

I'm probably forgetting one or two, but of the ones mentioned above, 4 of the 7 required at least 1 long trip back to the factory. The 94 had a fair amount of misfires, that may or may not have been the gun (I never sent it back). The ones that didn't require repair weren't shot enough to comment on long term reliability, but because I got tired of sending my guns back to Taurus and the looong wait for a return, I no longer buy Taurus hanguns. I guess you could call me a slow learner.

Been shooting my pt 101 for seven years now without a problem, and I shoot it pretty much once a week. Only thing I had to replace is the adjustable rear sight.(after I droped it on tile floor) , and they sent me a new one in less then a week (no Charge) . So I Just ignore these so called Knowledgable guys who think they know everything about a gun they never even shot.

By the way BerettaBuckeye - In case you didn't know, Brutus carries a Taurus

You could be right, Brutus is a pretend character so I guess it only makes sense he would have a pretend gun

The question was not about quality or customer service. It was about why dissatisified owners or others aren't offering to sell

I believe the most logical answer was stated above with regard to resale value vs. just tossing it in the sock drawer. Who would actually buy a second hand Taurus? Talk about really pushing your luck
