Taurus changed my mind

Wow guys, I found this site and this thread through Google.

I went to a local shooting range two weeks ago with a friend and one of the guns he brought was a Taurus Judge. Needless to say that gun was a blast to shoot using .410 shotgun shells! He loves it.

I am actually waiting for my FID and PP so I can get one. You guys may be changing my mind. I don't need to spend $1000 for a headache! Didn't think there was much to go wrong with a revolver. I'll probably do a lot more researching before I make my decision now. I was looking at the Taurus Raging Judge that can accept 3" shells, .45 ACP or .454 ammo. This was just to be a "fun" handgun, nothing else.

M4, welcome to TFL! Glad to have you.

If you must get one of the Judge type revolvers ( a whole different debate ) might I suggest the upcoming Smith and Wesson Governor? Same thing, better company.

Thanks guys, I am not buying one yet, but I was seriously looking at them.

The $1K price was from their site. I have not looked at any local shops yet to see what they actually sell for.

I'll look for the S & W Governor and see what that is. Went to their site, I wish they made it with a longer barrel. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hey Skidder, one of my employees, Shaun, was the one you talked to on the phone today.

We are in the business of selling guns, but Taurus revolvers are pure crap, and most of my guys will definitely try to steer people to something else. I return as many Taurus revolvers for warranty service as all others combined. Taurus autoloaders, on the other hand, are a decent value - I've returned exactly ONE in the 3 1/2 years we've been there, and that was because neither the customer or us could get the set screw loose on the front sight so he could drift it and adjust POI/POA.

The thought of someone paying anywhere close to $1000 dollars for a Taurus.. let alone a worthless Judge just almost gave me a heart attack... and I'm still in my 20's.:barf:

Seriously, read the review from SWAT magazine when they tested the judge... it does not perform well.

You can also check out this month's issue of American Rifleman... last story in the Armed Citizens page..... tells of a woman who pumped 5 rounds of .410 into an attacker... luckily it was enough to stop the attack... but he got away. 5 rounds from anything else... even a .380 would have probably put him in the hospital where he would have eventually been caught.

If you want a serious defense gun, do NOT buy Taurus... especially the Judge. If you want a Judge because you think it looks cool, or you just want something neat and fun... take the gamble of poor craftsmanship and spin the wheel of Taurus I suppose. Waste of money in my book.

Interesting note re difference between (most) Taurus revolvers and their automatics. I recently acquired a .380 TCP 738 -- chose it because the trigger pull was smoother than any of the competitors I tried. To date, ~200 rds later: no problems, and very comfortable to shoot for something so small. My main complaint: I'd like another magazine, but there are none in stock.

Are the revolvers and the automatics made in different locations? Or are the revolver and the automatic designers just, er, of different levels of competency?

My friend got a new Taurus recently. He's a Glock man, but anyway, he was letting me have a cylinder when the hammer froze in mid-fire. 3 minutes later, it struck the primer and scared the f*ck out of everyone. Thank god I remembered the rules. I think I'll be patient and just pony up the funds for a good handgun from a respected manufacturer. Things on which you state your life are not laced to cut corners.

My best friend bought a Taurus for CCW, went to the range and it seemed to function ok. However, two weeks later on December 31 he was walking down the street when a criminal pulled a knife on him to rob him. He pulled out the revolver, only to have the revolver lock up on him. He got into a fight with the criminal, managed to disarm him, but in the struggle in the ground the criminal grabbed the revolver and hit my friend in the skull twice with it, cracking his skull. My friend had to have surgery to repair the damage.

I'd post the pictures here of him at the hospital, but am afraid they would be too graphic for this website.

I can sympathize with the OP's experience, it's never fun to purchase something new and find it already has problems.

That said, this thread is headed no place good in a hurry due to the strong feelings on both sides of this issue and before folks start name-calling I'm going to close it.
