Switching to the Dark Side - Glock 19 or 17?

Thats good to hear. I heard of a place in Easton that was selling them but stopped. I know about the law suit but didn't know there were any dealers willing to sell them. How do they comply with the 10lb trigger pull, are they sold as NY+? As a police officer I have to submit a letter by the Chief stating it's for official use only to get an off duty glock. Four Seasons won't even sell them to LEO anymore.

Yeah unfortunately they will come with the NY triggers, nothing an Apex or the like wont fix though. I know of about 8 shops in MA who will sell new Glock's for varying prices, as well as a shop in NH who will sell them for regular price and has an FFL in MA who will accept and do the transfer. I am also a member of a few MA gun pages where Glock's pop up used all the time.

If the G34,35,20,21,41,40 isn't on the list I'd move.

No CZ or M&Ps on the list of firearm they'll allow???

Those Glock's are all on the list, same with M&P's, but there are no pre-ban M&P mags since the M&P didn't exist around the time of the AWB. CZ's are not on the list, some gun manufacturers refuse to submit pistol to MA to get on the roster because they don't want to deal with the all the BS and just find it easier not to.

Not a Glock fan personally. When the Glocks first came on the scene, my buddy and I went to try them out. I was dedicated to the SA auto and a devoted follower of Colonel Cooper. My buddy was a deputy sheriff, back in the days when you could carry whatever you wanted, so long as it was a 4" Smith & Wesson Model 19 or 66 (loaded with .38 Special ammo). Although I shot it well, I couldn't get used to the squirt gun trigger. My revolver trained friend, on the other hand, took to it like a duck to water and ordered one on the spot. Of the two, I would take the 19 because I think the mid size would be easier to carry.

I have a 17 & a 19 - both Gen 4's. The G-17 just feels better in the hand
and points better for me. If CCW isn't a primary concern, I'd get the
G-17. I recommend handling them at the gun store or better yet,
rent them to shoot.

I just got my first Glock--just think of them as the AR (think aftermarket superstore) of the handgun world and you'll get over your aversion pretty quick.:D

As others have said, it comes down to what is more comfortable for you. In my case, I decided that I'm going to only get a very few arms and learn to use them well. Therefore whatever I choose needs to be versatile. My first and only pistol is a G19 as I figured it can be used pretty darn well for HD, carry, and range even if it isn't necessarily the absolute best at any one area. I rented one at my local range and it fit pretty good, recoil didn't scare the crap out of me ;) , and shot a "powerful enough for me" round. So I bought one, put on the medium beavertail strap, and started shooting. Only about 400 rounds so far but I'm getting more comfortable already and my groups are getting smaller so I think it will serve me well.

Now I'm looking for that all purpose revolver to complement it. :D

That's easy, S&W K frame model 66 or 19, same gun but the 66 is stainless and the 19 is blued. Not too big, not to small, 6 shot capacity. Essentially the Glock 19 of the revolver world. You can get them in in 2.5" barrels and up.

I prefer the way the G17 feels in my hand (but I have big hands). Unless it feels better to you too, though, there's no reason to pick it over the G19 with the capacity limits.

Even with the capacity limits I can still have pre-ban mags, and can get them fairly easily although they are expensive. I already have a couple 15rd pre-ban Glock 19 mags that I could keep or trade towards Glock 17 mags.

Yeah, sorry, I responded without having read the thread. I thought there was a categorical ban there, but I now understand that the date of manufacture of your scary hi-cap mag is the difference between being a law-abiding citizen and a felon. Good grief.

Makes total sense right? :p

They are both good guns and I would carry either of them with confidence. But if I had to pick one I would pick the 17. I can shoot it more accurately, it is more comfortable, and I just have a personal preference of full size pistols also. I like both guns but the accuracy of the 17 is too sweet. And the gen 4 17s are very comfortable to me ergonomically.

I would prefer the G19 by a mile.

My hand locks into the slightly shorter grip of the 19 and provides better control for me. I also shoot smaller groups with the 19. The G19 is about as large as I care to CCW and still hold more than enough rounds.

As much as that's an option you can get royally screwed in this state getting caught with what they call post-ban mags. The chances of ever getting caught with them are slim, but when the outcome is major fines, possible jail time, and getting my license revoked for life, than risk isn't really worth it when I still have access to pre-bans. I already have a Beretta M9A1 which I have a few pre-ban 15rd mags for, but the ergonomics on that gun isn't any better than Glock's. Pretty much the most common handguns in this state you can get pre-bans for are Beretta 92/M9's, Sig 229's/226's, Glock's, and Ruger P-series.

Before anyone says move, if the choice is unlimited access to high capacity mags, or being close to my family and friends, ill choose the later.

All that aside I am going to have to track down a 17 and try it out again and bring my buddy along with his 19 so I can compare the two.

The vast majority of full capacity magazines available in America have no distinctive pre/post ban markings whatsoever. Shy of being a total idiot, by buying right across the state line or something, how exactly would anyone get caught resisting this stupid law?

My understanding of the Maryland magazine laws is that you may not buy or transfer a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds in the state. However, you may legally purchase higher capacity magazines in other states and bring them into Maryland.

Maryland is a very small state. I can't imagine anyone living there not taking a trip for an hour or two and buying some normal capacity magazines.

I find the 19 to be the near perfect combination of size and shape for concealment and good shooting. It accepts G17 magazines if you want the extra capacity or length (if you use a grip adaptor).

Another thought is to get a 19 and chop the grip to take 10 round Glock 26 mags. The short grip hides even better.

If I lived in a commie state with capacity limits enacted by a douchebag legislature, I'd go with 45 ACP. I'd buy an S&W M&P 45 Compact since the gun is the same size as a G19. This makes it very concealable with 8+1 capacity. It accepts the full size 10 round magazines. I'd carry those on my belt. The only downside to the M&P is the trigger has to be fixed with APEX parts. This adds another $100 to the cost, along with the cost of night sights...you're in for another $200.

Or...just get a 26. It's a great gun.
