Surrounded by angry bikers. What would you do?

Update....

I just watched a Fox News update with a press briefing by the "Commish"; NYPD's Raymond Kelly. The "PC" informed the media the SUV driver contacted 911/law enforcement & was in fear for his life/lives of his wife/5mo old baby.
No occupants of the SUV will face any criminal charges by the NYPD but I'd almost guarantee they'll be some lawyers who will file civil actions.

PS; my good friend likes motorcycles & we both said US motorcycle riders should swerve back & forth a few times if following a SUV or vehicle so the driver can keep track of where the motorcycle is.
Years ago, in the early 1990s, I was in my mom's small Sundance sedan as we drove across VA's I-64. It's a long straight road for around 35min. As I put my turn signal on & changed lanes, I saw a biker in the blind spot of my driver's side.
It was a close call & it showed me that if you are on a motor-cycle or scooter(like a Vespa), you need to be alert too. ;)

The video was taken from a helmet cam on one of the bikes and is a little long. For some reason, one biker cut in front of the SUV and slowed suddenly causing the SUV to hit him from behind. The guy stopped and that is when the real trouble started with the bikers damaging the SUV. The driver takes off and runs over several bikes and the chase is on. It ends with the SUV driver being pulled out of his vehicle and suffering a beating that required stiches.
These bikers, were they The Born Losers by any chance? Story sounds too familiar. Where's Billy Jack when you need him?

Beyond that, however, the SUV driver made some really stupid decisions.
...like running over 3 (nonthreatening) guys that were still on their bikes, in order to get away from the initial attackers.
...or running over 2 bikes and one biker, to get away the second time.

He ran over bikes, not people.

What would you suggest he do? Stay there and take a beating? He had to keep his family safe and drive off. Would you keep your wife and small child in that situation?

FrankenMauser, What other options did he have?

And a another thing....

One - thing, Id add is the SUV driver at one point had the front door open.
My first step as I got on the commo with the Calvary would be to baten down the hatches & prepare to repel boarders. ;)

PS; this event is a good reminder to buy a GM vehicle or corp partner with the OnStar or sat emergency system. If you get in a road rage event or a TA(traffic accident), help can locate you or guide first responders to your vehicle.
note; stock Chevy Tahoe PPV type SUVs do not have OnStar features for the obvious reasons(if you are in the market for a ex-cop vehicle).

Yes, it is a big difference if it was just one biker acting up around the SUV versus a literal horde of bikers. I can imagine the driver would be overwhelmed (that is the intent of the biker horde) and extremely nervous not being able to keep on eyes on every potential threat from rear, both sides, and front. I honestly think I would have sideswiped bikers aggressively after the first encounter. Once they upped the ante with that braking trick I would assume they are out to hurt my family and the gloves would come off.

I used to rides bikes back in the 1970s and was always acutely away of the huge difference in MV(2) = E of motorcycle versus car/truck. The bike always loses close encounters of that sort. Most normal bikers are going to give cars and trucks a wide berth for their own safety. Seeing a biker purposely get so close and cut in front and brake would be an obvious sign it is intentional and they are willing to risk their own life so they probably do not care a whit about my family's lives. End of game time and time for serious work.

Long time biker...first time responder(to this thread). :)

Been riding almost 40yrs. and will hopefully ride for many more. Obviously, I enjoy it.

Having been run off the road, pulled out in front of and literally run over while sitting at a traffic light , I learned a long time ago that road rage, especially on a bike, can get you a severe case of road rash if not killed. Stupidity, like that shown by the rider that brake checked the SUV gets you..well...what the rider got.

Barring other factors that can't be seen on the video, IMO, it appears that this event was nothing more then a 'mob of thugs' trying to take over the expressway. They just happen to be thugs on bikes. Thugs are thugs. Doesn't matter if they are on motorcylces, bicycles or in cars.

Same as I would not want to shoot anybody in a SD situation, I would not want to run anyone over either. But if it involved my families or my life, I would not hesitate to use any means necessary to help insure our safety.
If that would involve driving through an angry mob of people standing in the street that are showing life threatening aggression towards me/family, so be it.

These thugs should be arrested and the prosecutor should wear out a couple boxes of ink pens writing up multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon.

There will almost definitely be a law suite filed on behave of the SUV driver for the damage to his SUV and for the beating he got. The video clearly show the bikers started the whole incident. The biker that hit his brakes trying to slow down or stop the SUV was probably the dumbest of the bunch. Any of the bikers that got run over got what they had coming. Those bikers sure were brave against one small guy, his wife and baby. How many of them would have instigated this event if they were alone and not in the company of a gang ? Given the reputation of biker gangs and the actions of this gang the guy in the SUV had every right to fear for his life and the life of his wife and baby. I feel he had every right to try to protect himself and his family.
I have nothing against bike riders, but these guys were clearly out of control.

Are you meaning the SUV driver should have been prepared to run over or back up over any biker trying to hem him in?

I think that is one option I would have seriously considered.

Heck the moment I would have been boxed in I would have backed up and started doing donuts.

Lets not forget that the hierarchy in NY decided that its subjects have no need for pistols with a capacity higher than seven. I guess a mob of 30+ bikers trying to murder you and your family didn't enter anyones minds at the time.

You illegally park your bikes in the roadway blocking my escape from the so called initial attackers you are part of the attack imo and deserve what ever you get same as the ones up close.

I viewed the video somewhat differently.

If someone positions his motorbike so as to block my escape while his colleague opens my door, tries to pull me out of my car, or breaks my window in with my helmet, the fellow blocking my escape is an accomplice in the looming assault, and therefore part of the threat.

Looks like a bad situation all around. I think the RR actually did call 911.

Myself?
1. I don't have an RR. I have a little car most of the time.
2. I take efforts at my age to avoid provoking conflict. Even if I win, I am going to lose.
3. However if stuff starts I will take all actions to defend myself. I have no problems baning up my car (even more) to save my life, and I am keenly aware that I am in a 2,000 lb machine built for safety and the BG(s) are on glorified bicycles.

Ignoring the fact I'm heavily armed, luckily if I'm by myself I usually have 1-20 dogs of various sizes. A full auto wiener dog is a terrible thing to behold. ;)

Wife?
1. She sideswipes building for fun. She wouldn't notice a few bikes that got in her way...

This guy was singled out and set up by the bikers

Lessons to be learned.

1. Don't get off the highway.
2. Drive and drive as fast as you safely can while contacting the police.
3. Use your car as a weapon if you need to and don't be afraid to drive over people illegally blocking you in and threatening you.
4. Dont' leave the vehicle and shoot anyone who tries to gain entry. Leave as soon as you can.
5. Stay out of New York and New Jersey - you will never have a fighting chance against a mob of criminals in a stopped vehicle without a gun.
6. Keep the gas tank at least 1/2 way full.

My 8-shot Ruger LC9 would be pretty much useless in that situation. That's why when I travel (which I do a lot of) I carry my Glock 17 with 20 round magazine in my glove box. Makes me think about keeping a loaded spare mag around now too.

What I found surprising was how confined the stretch of road was. It was freaking me out to watch this guy drive his vehicle with absolutely no way maneuver.

I carry a Glock 20 with an extra magazine for just such an emergency. Once they start trying to break my windows and remove me from my vehicle I'm going to see how many of them I can kill before either they think better of it or I run out of ammo.

BTW: Those aren't "bikers." They're punks on crotch rockets.

after a few years of the city 'children' and thugs swarming malls, looting and causing 10's of thousands of dollars of damage --
and NOT being arrested even when they post their mayhem on the social internet...now they have taken to the highways.

this is Change I can do without.

this, unlike the mall carnage, the media is forced to report;
after all, its already on the web for all to see. now lets see
what our elected officials will do. odd also that for the entire film,
not a cop is to be seen anywhere.

I tend to agree he should have not exited the highway. Another thing I probably would have done is intimidate the bikers. Anyway you cut it, the bikes cannot withstand much impact from a car/SUV without serious damage to the bike.

I would have considered ALL the bikers a part of the same group and attempting to assault me and my family. Any responsible biker would have dropped out of this mob.

Judicious swerving and braking would have forced the bikers to keep their distance until the arrival of law enforcement and I would bet that NONE of the bikers were doing that. The LAST thing they wanted was for the man to show up.

Even if the bikers had been armed, most of us are right handed and the throttles are on the right grip. That means the biker would have had to draw and manipulate his weapon with the left hand or they would have lost speed and had to catch up.

This kind of mob mentality among some bikers is very troubling as it really gives a bad name to all of us who enjoy riding and letting everyone share the highway.

What I saw in the video was the bikers hogging the lanes and riding on the white stripe as if daring the SUV driver to encroach. I have seen similar behavior in Arizona during bike week when a lot of out of town folks come here to show their rears.

I can just imagine how helpless and intimidated the SUV driver must have felt.'

He made some bad decisions and I am glad he did not pay for it with his life.

The guy who smashed the driver side window to get the driver out of the vehicle should have been staring down the barrel of a gun right then and there.

Impossible, for The State had previously disarmed the driver.

Not impossible - more than likely illegal though; but there are a FEW folks with NYC CCW permits. Way back when, one of my friend's dad had his, then again he was an attorney with certain connections.

There was a missed opportunity by the RR guy (instead of getting trapped in traffic.)
After he ran over a couple of them he went a hundred yards or so before any of the bikes gave chase.
That was his chance to turn around and face them, stopped but ready to mash the gas if the bikes continued their pursuit and aggression... think bowling ball and pins.

However, as effective as that might have been, perhaps causing many to flee, mowing down many of them would not have garnered the same public or police support he has received because being drug out and beat up clearly points out who the bad guys are and proves that his fears were justified.

Its worth noting that several of the bikes were off-road types, some without lights or plates, there is little doubt that their intentions were to slow traffic and hog the road to screw around doing stunts.

The guy with the helmet cam should be identified and forced to cough up his entire recording to obtain the facts of all of their activities before the RR came into play and to ID and prosecute those who pulled him out and participated in the beating.

Anymore to be said? This is really a T and T issue, BTW.

Repeating the same tactical advice and/or complaining about bikers, etc. - are we done? Complaining about NY? What else is new?
