Surplus Beretta M.92S What the deal?

Here is mine, just purchased from SOG. Looks brand new. I has a plum type blueing and has higher sights than others speak of. The slide feels like it is on ball bearings. $319 for hand picked.

^^^ That's interesting about the sights. The gun also has the later-style grips. I'll have to compare the serial number to that of my gun once I have a chance to open the gun safe.

Does your gun have the cryptic "CHE009814" barrel marking? This appears to be obscured in the photo. FWIW if you digitally edited it, the serial number is on the frame. The meaning of the barrel number is in dispute; my pistol, along with all others clearly posted on TFL, is marked "CHE009814". The pistols also all seem to bear 2004 "BU" proof codes even though they display features suggesting diverse build dates; military and police firearms do not require proofing in Italy, and it has been surmised that the guns were all proofed together when the issuing agency struck them off inventory, rather than when they were made.

Does the pistol have the Gen3 locking block?

The barrel has the same CHE number, the PM on my Beretta is on the barrel not the slide as I have seen on others. I believe it is a Gen 1 barrel locking block. I understand that the number on the barrel was a contractor batch number and does not correlate to the serial number on the gun. Also, my hammer drop is of the newer design and my trigger is different than others I have seen.

SOME of the 92fs replacement mags have the cut out and will fit; the Berretta spare mag I bought does anyways. The grip is large but it is a full size double stack; they are great shooters. Even though they are a later production run (early 2000's), the locking blocks are prone to failure; mine broke last week.

Beautiful pistols...

The story I've heard most places is that older Mec-Gars and almost all Beretta-branded factory mags have the 92S cutout. However, most newer Mec-Gars and almost all USGI mags made by contractors (e.g. Checkmate) do not.

FWIW I picked up a 10rd AWB Beretta mag at a gun show for the princely sum of $8, and it has the cutout, although AFAIK the 92S had long since ceased to be sold in the USA when the AWB went into effect.

Which generation of locking block did you have?

As I discussed in my last post, all of these pistols bear 2004 proof codes but have features suggesting a variety of actual build dates, and the varying features include different generations of locking block. My pistol has the so-called Generation 2a locking block.

A guide to the generations may be found in this Beretta Forum thread.

She's a BZ line from 2005 that I purchased this year. She was spotless and I have no regrets in that; it's a beautiful gun. Probably around 400 rounds is when the locking block failed; I don't know the generation of the block itself. She's fixed and I'm picking her up next week....happy boy! :D

The spare Mag, I picked up at Cabelas. Easy enough.
