Tannic acid from the leather tanning process will pit your gun's finish if left too long in the holster. Same with carbon steel knives. You gotta remove them and wipe 'em down regularly or expect unnatural wear. And spraying oil in your holster will soften the leather and ruin the holster.

Storing a gun in any kind of holster or pistol rug or case will result in finish damage. Moisture in the air will be collected in the holster/case and applied directly to the metal. If you don't are about the finish go ahead. As a retired smith I have seen many guns with finish damage from people that do this. If you live in a very dry climate like Arizona this will not apply to you.

Most of my guns are in a 72"x42" safe. Of my carry guns my Sig 226 goes on the headboard where I or my wife can reach it as the holster is on the belt and too much trouble to take off every night and my pocket 340PD stands up in my bedside drawer where I can reach it.
P.S. My dad kept his Det Spl in his holster in his drawer for years and it has very slight rusting on his cylinder.

My carry gun is my nightstand gun. I take it out of the holster mostly cause it would be dumb to have to grab the holster and throw it off the front of my gun in order to shoot an intruder. I've got no kids, so that's not an issue. My apartment is only two rooms (not counting bathroom) so if someone busts in the front door, I've got very little time before they're busting in the bedroom door as well.

Mine gets a break from the holster when not carried.

I agree. I don't want my new holster to feel like my old baseball glove.

Mine are just "stored" on a shelf in my safe, loaded, of course. There is no such thing as an empty gun, and I intend to prove it.
