Sportsman's Warehouse vs. WallyWorld in Ammo.

Never thought I'd see the day when WalMart would be outpriced by a competitor. A Sportsman's Warehouse just opened up in our locale and I was surprised that their ammo prices were that good, especially in the FMJ practice loads in most calibers. WalMart doesn't carry the megapaks in 250 in Winchester or Remington, and the savings is even more substantial...Is this an anomaly for this locale? I do remember that WalMart had a price increase in their ammo some months ago....
I have to admit that the PD ammo seemed high at the Warehouse; but WallyWorld doesn't carry it and the local gun stores is even higher....

Hey Aspen,

Walmart is still the cheapest for ammo in my area so I hope they stick around. The problem is that they are pulling out their guns and ammo from most stores.

Got a SW and walmart in my neck of the woods and walmart is always cheaper with handgun ammo.

But wally doesn't carry fmj rifle practice ammo (at least in .308 for me). If I want to buy rather than reload, I have to go to SW to get Federal 150gr FMJ, 20rds at $10 IIRC. Wally's cheapest .308 is about $16 for 20rds I think... but that is Win silvertips @ 150gr, not FMJ.

I like Sportsman. I'm thinking about applying part-time with our local SW. I work four on and get four off at my department so it's easy to do. As an employee I get a 10% discount - to include guns and ammo. Not bad.

may the empire of Walmart die a painful death...regardless of the price of ammo...

amen brother.

Walmart is in the business of making money. Once it becomes unrpofitable for this blood sucking coporation they will pull out the ammo and leave everyone who used to depend on them stranded. Fo those of you who say it won't happen to your local Walmart, 1/3 of all Walmarts in the US have pulled ammo from their shelves, and yours can well be next. Mean while all the local shops are already squeezed out by Walmart's buying power.

I hope someone else understands what Walmart has done to the gun industry.

If every one of us wrote a letter, and got one more person to write a letter then they did and so forth and so on, I think Walmart would reconsider.

They had a bad quarter just now. If you really want to make an impact, buy a few shares and write the letter letting them know you are a stockholder and plan to vote your shares to oust them if they don't reconsider.

I have no interest in buying shares in a company that has, more than any other company, crushed the American industrial production. Y'all have fun with your Walmart guns and ammo and then cry about it when they pull the stuff off their shelves, I'll be in my local gunshops where the people actually deal with guns for a living, where the people know me on a first name basis, where they know the difference between FMJ and JHP, instead of some minimum wage worker who just got off a shift at the baby products isle.

Walmart is in the business of making money.

It always ticks me off when businesses try to do that.

company that has, more than any other company, crushed the American industrial production

You can thank your friendly neighborhood labor union for that.

I will continue to buy my range ammo at Wally World, for as long as they sell it!!!! What is the issue of buying ammo for CONSIDERABLY less than other stores? If they can sell it for that much less...and are in the business of making money...uh, then what the heck are the other stores doing selling it for twice as much?? If ever Wally does not sell ammo anymore...I will just go to another store to buy it, just because I am buying it from them now, does not mean that I cannot buy ammo anywhere else, so I don't understand how I could be left "stranded". One thing that I have learned (as most of us already know), America is in the business of Making Money, I have yet to find a business whose Mission Statement reads anything like..."We want to lose money". If they can sell the same ammo...or any product for less and make a profit...I call that smart business. If I am shopping for Fords (or any car), I sure the heck ain't gonna go and buy my car from the dealership that charges the MOST!

Walmart is pulling guns and ammo from their shelves because it is a pain in the rear for them to stock them. There are too many laws and liability to deal with and their personnel have to be properly trained. Sports Authority pulled guns and ammo from all of their stores for the same reason.

As for volume buying power, that is Walmart's strong suit. You can talk about supporting small business, but I can't afford to do that as much as I shoot. We are talking about considerable difference here... not just pennies.

alright folks, everyone seems to be okay with the business practices of Walmart. I digress. When you job goes to Sanjay in Bombay, tell him I said hi.

I've never seen the Remington UMC megapaks priced cheaper than the Winchester valuepaks.

There's nothing funnier than a thread about where to buy cheap ammo that turns into a Walmart bash. If you don't like low prices then buy your practice ammo at your local gun shop. If you object to Walmart business practices buy at your local gun shop. Now Sportsman Warehouse must have a very different business practice, right? They have opened dozens of stores in the last year but insist on paying the highest prices to stock their stores. They only buy American made ammunition for their stores.

If you want to bash Walmart move to Chicago. I think they've been outlawed in Chiacago along with pate de foi gras.

that's cute, but my local shops have decent priced ammo for my liking. for example, I get a case of 1000 rounds of 45 for 189 dollars. That's about the same price as the valuepacks, maybe even a little less.

I get all my shotgun ammo in my gun shop too, their price is excellent, and I live in the Bay Area of California!!!!

I don't dislike low prices, I just dislike what Walmart does to achieve low prices while still make a profit. Where my family come from, we shoot a lot and we treat our fellow man with respect. I hope you will never have to work in a Walmart cuz it ain't nice at all. At times, the principal still matters more than saving a few bucks. At least for me. You can do whatever you feel like, it is a free country, doesn't mean we have to accept everything in this country.

Don't forget to tell Sanjay I said hi!!!!

My gripe with Walmart isn't that they make money..it is that they will do almost anything to make more money...business practices that most would have thought predatory and completely unethical years ago...and the disease has spread rapidly...the man who is considered the father of capitalism said himself that capitalism must be governend by moral principles or it would consume everything in sight eventually cannibalizing upon itself...the decaying state of American business today proofs that..thank God, my god isn't money...I'm not going to run with lemmings...although the lemmings keep telling me how exciting it is to run with them..

..I have many fond memories of shopping at sporting goods stores years ago(and a few today)..I don't have any, shopping at WM...and you know, WM stores are just plain ugly to look at...the American landscape has gotten considerably uglier since WM built, abandoned and built mega WM stores across the tainted plain...PUKE!!..and you know..it isn't worth the trouble to save a buck on a box of ammo to fight the vast parking lot...walk in among the WM herd...try to find any help, let alone help that knows much of anything about sporting goods..it just ain't worth it..

In a sense, they are eating the hand that feeds them. Once everyone here is unable to buy anything, who will they sell to?

I am glad, very glad to see Sportsman's Warehouse opening stores.
We just got one in Chattanooga. :D

How much are the 250 round boxes, and what caliber?

As for business practices, I haven't heard about Sportsman's Warehouse, but it's been well documented that Walmarts are Anti-American, and (probably) illegal, if you could get them prosecuted.

We like to save as much money as anybody, but more and more, we shop elsewhere.

As another poster said, when you lose your job, because whatever you do is being done much cheaper across the ocean, maybe Walmart will hire you.

(At least you'll get a 10% discount.)
