DocHolliday-

I think think if you took this poll among people who *REALLY* know how to fight with a handgun, and not just among people who want to plug their own personal favorite paper puncher, you'd find a much higher percentage of 1911's.

If you could poll people that are the real deal, I'd bet it would look something like this:

70% 1911's
30% Sig, Glock, H&K etc.

Rex:

I guess you missed the point. This is just a mental exercise. There is no right or wrong answer to the question. Only opinions.

That being said, I guess you are the real deal, huh? The rest of us are just paper punchers with our yuppie Glocks and Sigs who don't *REALLY* know what we're talking about. And because you say that 70% of the people would think a 1911 is the best gun, all of the 40 or so postings above are wrong. Oh, and don't leave out all of the military and police out there who don't carry 1911's.

By the way, how many times have you actually had to use a handgun to defend yourself?

Rex Feral,

Why should I rely on 1911s when they don't fit my hand, balance very poorly for me and that without major modification chew the web of my strong hand? If using SIG Sauers because they work better for me makes me ignorant then I'm guilty as charged.

So many pistols, so little money.

The 1911 is an out standing gun... But with out my having fired 50? No - at least 200 rounds of ammo to test it... I dont trust ANY handgun. Not one. If I had to choose an average gun for this mission it would be a S&W Model 10 with a 4 inch heavy barrel.
If I had more options it would be HK's SOCOM as I mentioned above. This missions sounds like the suppressor would be perfect... but I'ld take it with out if I had to. Load that sucker up with .45 Super and then we could rock and roll. But if I cant get the SOCOM... Gimme that Model 10!

Why? All guns are untrustworthy untill they proove there worth. I have seen new guns fail... from all over... but I have NEVER seen these two fail when they were in REASONABLE condition.

Doc, this one takes the cake for unlikley scenarios.

What?? Oh, what pistol would I take, right. I wouldn't bring one. Well, maybe a suppressed Ruger MkII .22LR, but nothing bigger and it has to be suppressed. I figure, if I start popping off rounds, I'm dead anyway. The scenario you specifiy requires stealth and fieldcraft, not firepower.

Later,
Chris

By the way, thanks to all the replies above, I just ordered 5 hi cap Glock 20 mags. I don't even own the gun yet! I've been wanting one for a while, though. Well, it wouldn't be the first time I ordered hi-caps before I bought the gun (Walther P99). Now I have to decide if I want the 20 or the 20C, and if I want the old or new frame.

Gun?

Give me a new pair of pants and a 4-wheeler.

The pants for when i jump out of the plane and s*&t myself.

The quad so i can get the hell out of there as fast as i can.

If I couldn't test the weapon myself, no matter HOW MUCH I trust the other guy, I would want the weapon to be a Glock or HK USP in .45 ACP. But I would insist it be suppressed. The whole idea of this exersize is to NOT BE THERE. You're not out to take out the enemy, you don't want to even leave footprints. You want to avoid contact. If contact is made, you want it to be as quiet as possible so as not to alert others. No one should know you were even around.

"Carry" on

Rick

I prefer armed combat to unarmed combat. It's easier on the knuckles.

I'd take the heaviest pistol I could find. That way, if I ran across enemy soldiers, I'd throw it at em and hope that I did enough good things in my life to get through the gates of heaven.

Hey branot-

I don't claim to be the real deal, I've had a good bit of training, but I have never had to go to the extreme of using a firearm in self defense. I speak only of those I know or who move in the same circles as me, that carry firearms professionally, about 70% of them use 1911's (Colts, Springfields, Wilsons and Government Models). To me, and many others, the 1911's start to really show how good they are when used in situations that simulate actual combat. Some proffesionals just don't like them, they make up the 30% that carry something else.

I was surprised how poorly some of my favorite whiz-bang wonder DA/SA hi-caps performed in my hands during some combat drills and became a 1911 convert on that day.
My intentions were not to question anyones skill with their weapon of choice, but if you haven't tried it in realistic scenarios you may be surprised, as I was. Do yourself a favor and try it out, it shook my basic theory of what a combat handgun should be right off it's foundation.
