So, you're parachuting behind enemy lines..

A new twist on the 1911 vs Glock, 9mm vs 45, et al. With emphasis on reliability.

Tomorrow night you parachute behind enemy lines, a group of friendlies is there to meet you and give you a message. You're to get back to your own side, through a terrain that you know well.

(OK if you MUST you can throw in sand, mud, water, jungle or sub freezing temperatures--I'd rather keep it mild and simply "in the woods" . You can wear a holster, concealment is NOT an issue.)

For some reason (I know it's absurd, trying to make a point here, so bear with me) you can't carry a carbine, or submachine, or even a knife. just ONE hand gun with plenty of spare ammo.

Worse, you've never seen the handgun, nor do you have time to shoot it.

Fresh out of the box, it's given to a competent shooter yout trust absolutely. He fires 50 (not 500) rounds with the ammo you specified, cleans it, and leaves a brief note: "It's Ok"

Question: Which handgun would you choose and why?

And while we're at it, what ammo did you ask for?

Questions don't come any easier than this. Full size Glock in either 40,10mm, or 45. (Especially if it's fresh out of the box)

Got to Agree Glock.

Mine would be a Model 17.

After all the gun was designed for the military, specifically for these types of situation.

My choice would be a SIG 210 (9mm) along with about 6 spare mags loaded with Federal +P 124gr HydraShok ammo. I have small/short hand ans single column pistols are more comfortable and I don't do too well with DA pistols. As for the pistol, Swiss quality, accuracy and reliability.

If I had to pick either a 1911 or a Glock I`d take a Glock 20. Good reliability,15rd. mags, fairly accurate, pretty flat shooting powerful cartridge that should bust brush okay. 180gr. JHPs Marcus

Glock 20 or 21, best out of the Box Gun there is. ;)

Loaded with FMJ so I don't have to worry about Function.

Greetings To All, This answer is very simple.
My Sig-Sauer P220A in .45ACP. Sig's are world
reknown for extreme reliability; even in harsh and/or adverse extremes, such as sub-
zero climates. :D

I would take my glock30 45acp load with triton or corbon. compact but still comfortable as a main wepon. the 10rounder is a minus but will live with it. 45acp should take the guy out or at least take him to the ground were i can finsh him there.
Also the Glock series can take abuse. And is very easy to use. no levers or other things to snag on. only lever is the slide release.

Would i get to take a slincer? that would be the best weapon of my choice! :) ;)

Glock 20 with FMJ.
A reasonable compromise between the 17 and 21.

...defend the 2nd., it protects us all.
No fate but what we make...

Wilson Combat CQB, it functions with anything I can stuff in the mag.

GI .45 ball, low flash signature and total reliability.

6 Wilson Combat 7 round magazines, no point in carrying too much ammo, you are going to die if you try to shoot it out with soldiers packing long guns.

Game plan: Don't shoot the damn thing if at all possible! Avoid contact with bad guys. If you are forced to shoot, grab the bad guy's weapon, magazines, grenades and anything else useful.

Either a Glock 18 with plenty of 33 rounders, or a Beretta 93 R, possibly a Uzi Pistol (micro version with stock). Why, obviously because these are full auto/ burst capable, and with 9mm there should be no resupply problems. If I have to be armed only with a pistol, I would want it to be one of these.
Barring those, a SIG 226 or Glock 17. My personal 226 has never failed me. I trust it to do whatever I need. The G17 has a good reputation, and I like the ones that I have fired.

Smith & Wesson Model 19 or Model 28, both .357 Magnum.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Question begs for some reality. I know it is a fun game but really! As an old Navy Seal chief said when told of using the new SOCOM .45 for E&E, "If you are down to a pistol, your **** is pretty weak."
Boys, I don't want to go to war with a pistol. I want a rifle or better yet a RPG.

Hate to break from the para, eters but I'd want neither. I'd take a SIG Sauer P228. Once I run out of ammo I could find 9mm even in candy shops. NATO 124 grs FMJ would do just fine.

So many pistols, so little money.

Well, if you're talking a legitimate pistol (ie, not a Glock 18 or H&K SP89), I'd have to go with the Glock 20. Honorable mention would be the Para-Ordnance.

I have to agree with Rex Feral in almost all particulars, including doing all possible to avoid contact, and if impossible, capture of enemy weaponry.

I'd expand my choice to include any HIGH quality 1911 such as proper Kimber or Springfield Armory, or, preferably, a pre-1970 Colt. I really believe I could get along pretty well with a Browning High Power. Even a Glock, but I've shot less than 1000 rounds from Glocks and this is no time to start up with something new.

If I needed to take the 9 or a.40, I would of course opt for hi-cap mags. After all, given the mission and almost unlimited choice of sidearm, they would surely be available.

As often repeated,
IT'S THE MAN, NOT THE WEAPON. (But having the proper tools sure makes any job easier.)

Good thread.

Best regards,

I agree with TACO: the SIG P-210 is probably the most accurate (service grade) 9mm that you could get. Rugged and durable, and more likely to hit a distant target than any other handgun (except perhaps for a Contender...)

My second choice would be a CZ-75.
