Been all over the map these past 50 years but always with the idea that only accurate guns are interesting (attributed Townsend Whelen I think). A 1920 German Luger in .30 Luger was an early find, cheap and very accurate but tough to load for...bottle neck case and all that. But for the most part, I like offerings from the big three...S&W, Ruger and Colt. I don't have much truck with the plastic foreign bottom feeders that currently are all the rage...buy American, and keep the jobs here!!!
So...I started with Ruger Blackhawks...a trio of .357 3-screws and a Single Six convertible.
Then a passel of S&W's...especially the heavy N frame magnums, but soon branched out to some of the K's (currently: .22 lr M41, .357 M19, .41 Mag M57, 3 .44 Mag M29's, a .44 Spl M-24, a .45 ACP M25 1955 Target, a .32 H&R M16, a cpl of .32 S&W Top Breaks, a 4th model HE in .32-20, and finally a .45ACP M745, their first gen auto. We've also got a 3" M36 and a 1-7/8" M637 in .38 Spl that are carry and bedside guns. All of the S&W's were good, some excellent, some were absolutely superb...a cpl of the top breaks that I've picked up were especially difficult to load a pressure safe round that was accurate. Of the bunch, it's a toss up between the .41 and any of the .44 Mags as to which is most accurate, not counting the M41 .22 lr which is in a class by itself...gotta tell you that the .44 Spl M24 was a Christmas gift from #1 son half a dozen years ago...I'd lost it's predecessor to him in a shooting contest when he was 13 (here's a tip from an old timer: never bet your blued steel beauty revolver against a kid with a Marlin M39 .22 lr!!!). He found that M24 for $325 in a pawn shop!!
I've run through some Colts as well: half a dozen .45 1911's plus a .40 S&W, a 9mm and a .38 Super on the same frame. Too there is a SAA with two fitted cylinders in .45 and .45 LC, and a couple of Police Positives in .32 NP. I found a Diamondback 20 yrs ago for less than $200 in .22 lr that's currently in the safe as well....not as accurate as I'd hoped though...about 2.5" at 25 yds is the best it'll do...
Then back to the Rugers: especially the new Flat Tops...got 'em in both Lipsey's barrel lengths in .44 Special as well as the SS model in 4-5/8". Lovely accurate guns...too, I like and have found a 50th anniversary .357 FT, and its companion .44 Magnum...the bigger gun more accurate, but any of the current crop of Rugers need restocking, those cheese grater grips are a witch with a "B". Also a .41 Mag FT in the 6-1/2" barrel length. A .45 NVBH rounds out the Ruger line for me...but needed a cylinder throat opening from Cylindersmith.com to bring it up to accuracy standards, but does well now. Lastly, back in May I was lucky to find a Ruger SR1911...and padnuh, it's as accurate right out of the box, as any of my tricked out Colts. For a one gun 1911 fan, it'd be my recommendation! Had to pay full retail up at Budd's in Lexington, regretted the impulse till that first 7 shot group went down range...and then promptly forgot the purchase price.
Guess you could say I'm a 'generalist'...but do like some of the off beat calibers, especially in .32...looked my whole adult life for a .44 Special, then found 5 in a year and a half. As to favorites...the 1911's fit my hands the best and I shoot them well at speed, but at heart, I'm a revolver man...especially the single actions...those with really big holes in the cylinder faces!
Good luck, and don't ever sell! Rodfac
