So what "theme" do you follow for your collection?

I am a .357 kind of guy: single action, double action, and semi-auto.

I now have 8 of them:

Colt SAA
Blackhawk
627-2 PC X 2
27-5
28 Highway Patrolman
LCR
Sig P250

Next on the list is a lever action just for the fun of it.

Above all else, reliability. Next, it has to have the word "Ruger" on it [I've found this to be a pretty good indicator of the reliability thing]. Last, it has to be stainless steel...so I can break out the Flitz and make it shiny.;)

My theme has been plastic so far mostly because they're reliable and I can afford them. I'm hoping to break this soon with either a 1911 or S&W 629. Btw no glocks they just don't appeal to me. Sw9ve sw9f pf9 and xdm45

My theme: Guns I like shooting, and shoot well.

The ones I find I don't enjoy, or just can't shoot well, don't stay around long.

Luckily, that still leaves me with a nice assortment.

Any gun of any type in the calibers I reload.

45 colt
45 acp
38spl
357 mag
9mm

I have my 22, shotgun and rifle needs covered so now only handguns catch my eye.

I'm similar to sport45,,,

Do I like it? Do I want it? Can I afford it? I buy it.

But anyone who has read my rambling for a while,,,
Knows that I like to find rimfire/centerfire pairs of handguns.

Some examples are:

<Shameless Bragging>

Stella and Didi,,,
S&W Model 15 in .38 Special and S&W Model 18 in .22 LR.

Tmava Zena and Mala Sestra (Dire Woman and Little Sister),,,
CZ-75B in 9mm and CZ-75B Kadet in .22 LR.

Raquel and Rowenna,,,
Colt Trooper Mk-III in .357 magnum and Colt Trooper Mk-III in .22 LR.

Alessia and Allegra,,,
Beretta Model 85 Cheetah in .380 and Beretta Model 87 Cheetah in .22 LR.

I have a few more rimfire/centerfire pairs like this,,,
The latest set I've been shamelessly bragging about is different.

I wanted a set of S&W revolvers that would cover all 4 frame sizes,,,
And be chambered for the 4 most popular cartridges as well,,,
And this time I decided I wanted shiny handguns.

Jezebel = 6" Model 629 N-frame in .44 Mag,,,
Brighid = 6" Model 686 L-frame in .357 Magnum,,,
Morgana = 4" Model 67 K-frame in .38 Special,,,
Lilith = 4" Model 63 J-frame in .22 LR.

I call this set the Harem,,,

So while I might buy anything that catches my eye,,,
I do tend to have some kind of theme to my gun purchases.

It doesn't stop with handguns either,,,
I have an H&R Sportster chambered in .22 LR,,,
As well as an H&R Handi-Rifle chambered in .357 magnum.

I pair these rifles with my pair of Colt Troopers,,,
The slings I made for the rifles match the belt & holsters I made for the pistols.

I don't know if I'm artistic, obsessive compulsive, or full blown anal retentive,,,
But I have fun assembling my "sets" and shooting them at the range.

For me, there's two classes: those I've inherited, and those I've bought myself. Guns I purchase tend to follow the following criteria:
  • It has to have a purpose - just "cool" isn't enough. Guns I buy tend to fulfill one of the following three roles
    • Personal or home defense (biggest reason)
    • SHTF
    • Target shooting
  • My wife likes to shoot it, or at least that type of gun (key to my ability to keep purchasing guns)
    • For example, she doesn't care for my P99, but she does tend to like 9mm pistols
  • Ammo has to be commonly available, and relatively inexpensive
    • .22
    • 9mm Luger
    • 7.62x39
    • .223
    • .308 or 7.62 NATO
    • .38 Special / .357 Magnum
  • It must be reliable - if it has unexplained or chronic malf's, it goes away.
There are a few firearms I'm considering in the next few years:
  • Box (not build) AR in .223
    • S&W, LWRC, DD, or Larue
    • eventually two, under the "two is one and one is none" principle
  • A second MAK-90 (see above)
  • Charter Arms Pitbull in 9mm
  • Beretta Nano
  • Full auto 9mm - wife LIKES shooting full auto, and is good at it
  • Sig P210 Legend Sport (A guy's got to dream, eh?)

First things first, Reliable. Next, guns with a job/purpose. 3rd, stainless steel.

The only reason I have guns that don't fit all those requirements are they are either an heirloom, or they're resale is so low as to not be worth packing to the gun show or lastly they aren't generally available in SS (i.e. shotguns).

practical, rugged, reliable are my criteria. no use for pretty guns, all of mine are workers.

limit myself to a few calibers (.22, 9mm and .45) in pistols, easy to maintain the ammo inventory for them.

working on the rifle part of the collection now, will concentrate in .223 and .308 calibers there, as I already have a 9mm carbine

Sparks1957 is apparently my long lost identical twin because this is exactly what I would say.

The only exception to this is in heirloom guns that have been handed down to me and my recent purchase of a .380 LCP, I struggled long and hard about getting a .380, but in the end small size and pocket concealability won out.

I am big-time into the best value for the dollar. That's really the only theme I follow. Few ex. Taurus PT-92 instead of Beretta 92/M9, Rem. 1187-Police instead of Benelli M4/2, S&W Sigma instead of M&p, Kel-Tec P11 instead of Kahr PM9 etc...Of course, if money were of no object, I might (concerning only some) have made different choices but I live in the real world.

-Cheers

My collection goes by, "Is this something that I just can't live without?" I have everything from muzzle loaders, to SAA revolvers, to single shot shotguns, to an AK, AR, Saiga 12, .22 revolvers, .22 automatics, 9mm pistols, .40 sw pistols...just what I can't live without!

My collecting seem to be 2 tiered. My collection centers around U.S. military with it's center around the civil war & indian wars, then my shooting collection. This one is based on what looks good, gee I need that for the next hunt, I want to try one of those, see it and have to have it, ect. These are used and may be sold or traded for another. That being said there are a few non military guns that I like to much to sell or trade, but, mostly it is a sources of collection income or trade fodder. Inside the shooting collection there are a few sub themed collections, 1/ S&W revolvers 2/ 1911's 3/ match bullseye guns and 4/ .22 rifles. Been collecting for 50 years and it just seems to get bigger and more involved each year but man is it fun.

Military rifles are my current driver

My theme is military WWI or WWII at the current time.
There's always room to expand on this.

Classic P&R Smith and Wesson revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum, with the classic deep blue finish that S&W was famous for.

Do to the rising cost of the above I no longer make impulse revolver purchases. I decide what I want and wait for it to fall into my lap.

My collection ....

a. Nothing made from polymer...

b. High end 1911's ( Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer ...a few Kimbers) ...in 9mm, .40S&W and .45 acp... ( about 10 now ) ....

c. DA/SA guns ...only Sig Sauer....226's, 239's in 9mm and .40S&W ( 5 now)

In handguns I only want to reload 9mm, .40S&W, .45 acp / .38spl, .357 mag and .44 mag ......
