So I just turned in the paperwork for my permit...

What a PITA, I see one of these from Wilson Combat in your future! Hang in there brother.

NY makes CA look like a handgun paradise. We have our stupid safe handgun list and our ten day wait/cool off period and our safe handgun handling test but you can have a handgun in ten days if your not a prohibited criminal.

Yea, NY blows with their gun control. The law makers probably cringe when they see Floridas loose gun laws haha. I got my CWP in 3 weeks. Im not sure if my dd214 had anything to do with this or not :D But, to be honest man im shocked you need a permit to buy a firearm...thats just to unreal.

I think it's only in the 5 borrows that you need a permit for rifles and shotguns too. I'm only a half hour outside of the city but we don't need a permit for long guns.

I read this stuff and it makes me want to go outside and hug a coyote for being lucky enough to be in AZ. I feel for you guys, hope you can get Constitutional Carry sometime soon, too. We do have plenty of room for good gun people here, and the state is not completely desert.:p

I loved Arizona, it's a beautiful land. I got to see it a couple of years ago on a motorcycle ride from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon.

Makes me proud of the gnats, heat, and humidity in South Georgia.;)
My daughter got her Georgia Weapons License in January. She filled out the papers and was fingerprinted right after lunch on Monday. Her GWL came in the mail Wednesday.

We got watermelons down here, too.

Arizona seems a bit hot for me. Plus I'm a city boy at heart. While I don't want to live in NYC I do want to be close enough to visit on the weekends. Looking at moving someplace around Philly. Gun laws are good, it's way cheaper, and just a couple hours drive from NY so I can go to visit on the weekends.

born and raised in the bronx ny and still dont understand ny gun laws. Im hoping oneday they catch on, glad i live in fl now

Nickel Plated: You've got a very good point. This is the area I grew up in and there is no other place like it. My wife want to me to someplace like FL to live on the beach but I don't know if that's for me.

Move! Try Texas. Here we can walk into a gun store, show our CHL and walk out with anything. Don't even have to wait for a NICS check with a CHL. Buy or sell to an individual without Big Brother getting involved at all.

Also have a home in New Mexico, free there as well except they haven't gotten the law to allow a bypass of NICS with a CHL (yet). But they have a new Republican governor so there's hope yet.

The 92FS would certainly be a sweet choice. The 92 was my first large caliber pistol, it was 'the gun I always wanted' ... I think most of the credit goes to the 1987 movie Lethal Weapon - hehe. It's still easily the favorite of the guns I own and have shot. A great shooter, super reliable, still looks great, and draws plenty of attention at the range. "Hey, can I have a try with the Beretta?" ... I don't hear that request from any other gun I own. If you offer, people will shoot the other guns of course but the Beretta is the only one I have people ask if they can try it. I think it's only down side is it's a bit large for a concealed carry gun.

hiyah billybeards

living in upstate ny, and went through the process you are going through now

it is a matter of being patient

i am pretty sure you had to list some people that would write you a letter of
recommendation.....they will be contacted by the department that is going to
issue your license....

make sure you stay in touch with them and make sure that they write their
letters in a timely fashion.....although there are other things, like the mental
health check, that can take time, not having your people write the letters
as soon as they get their letter from the county, can really slow the process
down even more

i had to bug one of my guys for like a solid month before he finally completed
his mission....i was becoming a royal pain, but if i hadn't been bugging him, i would probably be still waiting

good luck!

this is a good board with very knowledgeable people, who are also pretty patient with newbies...so ask away!

Tonight we go take the handgun safety class that they make us take to get our permit.
From what I hear we'll get to "play with" plastic guns. It will be fun I'm sure.

The permits came in the mail today. I was surprised at how fast the process went, only about three months from start to finish.
Unfortunately, I had to have the central air fixed last week so I don't have the cash on hand to go shopping for my first handgun. All in good time.

The wife insists that we get a safe first so I guess that will be my first purchase.
Either way I'm going trap shooting tomorrow morning.

Yes, NYS handgun laws are a joke. Arbitrary, ridiculous, inconsistent. Probably a violation of the constitution, even with the most narrow reading of the second amendment. (An obvious violation under Heller, in my opinion.)
On the other hand, as a practical matter, ever been in midtown Manhattan? I defy you to find a safe direction to point a gun. Seriously. So I can understand the temptation to ban them under that circumstance. It's pointless and stupid, because people will do the stupid thing anyway.
It infuriates me that NYC's problems become the problem of the whole state, and that they would like to make it the problem of the whole country. I'm glad to hear that you got your permit. The excuse the clerk gave you when you applied sounds like typical bureaucratic BS, someone trying to head off a complaint before it happens. Not even NYS is that incompetent.

Wow! I thought mine was an ordeal. Apparently Kansas is pretty easy too.

1.Went to class

2. Went to Post Office to get picture taken..closed.

3. Took day off to get pic taken at PO..."we don't do that anymore"

4. Went to Walgreens to get pic.

5. Went to courthouse to get paperwork done...wrong courthouse. "have to go to the new courthouse"

6. Went to sheriff's dept to get notary stamp...didn't have right form.

7. Back to sheriff's dept with correct papers, answered 900 questions. Got a paper copy of CCL that you can't legally carry with. "have to wait for card"

8. Mailed papers to capitol where they have 1 person ,that must have a lot of vacation banked, processing papers.

9. 6 weeks later I got my card in the mail...YEAH!:D

So I guess I should consider myself lucky I don't live in NYS.
