So I just turned in the paperwork for my permit...

My wife and I just turned in the paperwork for out handgun permits this morning and we were told it would take about 6 months.
The woman in the permit office told us that the one person in the mental health department for the entire state that handles gun permits has retired and because of budget cuts she is not being replaced.

Yeah New York State!

NYC and NYS does whatever they can to discourage people from applying. Since they can't prevent people from legally owning a firearm, they just make it so difficult that, most people won't bother.

Hang in there and get your permits!

Yes, some of the less gun friendly counties in Georgia have been accused of manipulating the system to drag out the process.

The sheriff of the county that i live in is a Hoover like LEO that has been in office since his first squad car was a mule named blue streak. He does everything possible to drag out CCW permits just short of the state getting involved. So i just go to the adjoining county, that i grew up in ,and it takes under a week to both get it, and get it renewed.

in Oregon I just walk into the store and pass a backround check and I can take home whatever I want right there, even handguns. I did have some trouble getting my concealed handgun permit because the sheriff's office is understaffed. mine took twice as long as allowed by state law and nobody seems to care. but I've heard of other guys getting theirs in two weeks. when I got my non-resident WA carry permit they told me it could be up to 90 days because I didn't live in WA. 3 days latter I was surprised to find it in my mailbox.

Billybeards,

Been there. Done that. Grew up in NYC. Went through the trouble of getting both my handgun and long gun permits. Granted, it was many years ago, but it was a PIA then, too.

Let me throw in a little NYC humor into this thread. When I moved to CO I wrote to the NYPD to tell them I would not be renewing my permit because I had moved to another state. Their response, since I was not renewing my permit I had to turn in all my handguns to them. Yea right! What was really funny was, the mailed it to my CO address.

Here in NY it looks like things are getting more difficult by the day in terms of firearms but it's all I know so I'll just have to play along with the mans rules.

As beautiful as this country is I don't think I would want to live in any other part of the country, not to mention the fact that I work on Broadway and it would be difficult for me to live the way I do in any other par of the country with the work I would be able to get.
At this point I will still need to drive to PA to shoot a handgun.
The good comes with the bad.
Such is life.

Just curious because I have no plans to move there, but what do you do if you move to NY and you own guns?
Mere possession of a handgun in NYS without a permit is a felony, even for travelers. FOPA won't even protect you from arrest. There is an exclusion for competition, but it's very narrowly worded. Even handling pistols in NY without a permit is technically forbidden. This is unevenly handled in NY gunshops, however.
When you move, you have to leave your handguns in your previous state of residence, or you can send them to an FFL in NY.
Most people do the former.
You then wait until you have residency, then you apply for the permit. Then you wait for the permit. Outside of downstate, LI and NYC, most counties just lackadaisically process your permit and you eventually get it. Some upstate counties will even give you carry rights. Once you get the permit, you can transfer your guns to yourself via an FFL. Then you get to add your individual handguns to your permit. They're all listed on your permit by SN. If you possess a handgun, it needs to be on your permit. "Loaning" handguns does not happen in NY. Gun culture in NYS is....interesting. 100 years of handgun registration makes them an unfamiliar object to many residents, most of whom think every other state requires permits to possess them.

Glad I live in South Carolina......

South Carolina is a wonderful state. We now have a lot of former snowbirds living here. The process in getting a CCW permit is not that much of a hassle compared with other state and besides that a lot of folks here carry even without a permit.

Lemmon

living in IL is almost as bad, by law they have to respond(issue or deny) to a basic Firearm Owners ID Card application 30 days from getting it at the state office, yet I was told it would be about 12 weeks, and apparently there's nothing you can do to hold them accountable...Can't even rent a gun at the range without one. Then I get to wait for my Chicago permit to go through, I can't imagine that will be any faster. ugh! I don't mind getting permits, but it would be nice if they were efficient about it.

I’m not saying this is similar to the ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ concept but…wait…I guess I will say that.

I had a similar thing happen with my CC permit in OR. my county sheriff's office took 92 days when they were only allowed by state law 45. I called them and they didn't care. "you'll just have to wait." really? this is a law enforcement agency violating the law and you're that casual about it? e-mailed the NRA and they just told me to call the state DOJ. thanks for the help guys:rolleyes: called the DOJ and they gave me a number for the sate police. that number was for people who had been denied a firearm purchase and wanted to appeal(and it was voicemail) left a message anyway and they called me back and told me to call the DOJ!! called the DOJ AGAIN and they tried to give me the same number:mad: don't know how many times I worked in that they were unapologetically in violation of state law and the DOJ still didn't give a crap. sent another e-mail to NRA and they told me to call the DOJ. :barf:

the county sheriff has a handful of strikes against him as far as citizens and guns go, and a few others in unrelated areas but this is a small sparsely populated county and he's a good-ol-boy who pretty much runs un-opposed.

So this is how you score high on the Brady test then ... Wow! My 1st permit to purchase took about 2 weeks, after that one I don't think any renewal ever took more than a week. Once your police dept knows you, they just push it right on through. Permit to carry was supposed to take a month but it came in just over 2 weeks. I think if you already have a permit to purchase it goes faster, then it's just a formality after taking/passing a class. Have either one and your golden in the gun stores.:) See it, like it, buy it, take it home then and there along with a couple of boxes of ammo.

Well one thing Billy, once you have that permit and that new gun, you sure will appreciate it!!! It does make owning one a little more special. So what are you thinking of buying?

What do I want to buy? Isn't that the question of the century.
Since I have very little experience shooting I'm not totally sure yet. I am leaning toward something in 9mm at this point. The only two 9mm that I have shot were the Glock 19 and a Beretta 92FS but only one mag of each so it's really up in the air still. We're about a three hour drive from a range in PA that you can try out just about anything.
Also I need to factor in that this first gun will have to be something that my little wife will be comfortable with.
I did like the one 1911 that I shot but from what I read it probably shouldn't be my first.
My wife did make a point to say last night that if it really does take 6 months to get our permits it should fall right around my birthday in December but we'll see how cool she really is.

I must say that I have learned so much from ready this board even if I can't apply it yet.

Wow - - especially cruel when you consider that the bad guys just reach into their friend's trunk and pull out whatever they want to buy. But, you know, it's the road rage we need to worry about.

I just got my weapons license (good for concealed and open carry) here in Georgia. Took 9 business days. You don't even need a license to keep a pistol in your home, car, or business; just for carry.

Keep at it Billy! May yours somehow sneak through the cracks and get approved in 2011.
