So How Many Times Do You Slap A Magazine Before You Insert Into Firearm

uh... I don't, it's a wives tail. two forces are at play during operation.
1. as the bolt/slide strips the top round the friction forces the round under it to ride forward until it butts up against the front of the mag

2. once the top round is stripped there is a split second as the next round is riding up before it comes into contact with the feed lips where gravity will force it to ride in any number of positions depending on the orientation of the firearm at that point in time.

regardless of how these two forces interact and the final orientation of the top round in the magazine, any work you do to try and even the rounds in the mag up will be completely useless.

Then Laws of inertia will want the ammunition to stay where it is as the gun recoils backwards....effectively "unslapping" the magazine.

Insert your rounds fully, make sure it stacks right.

Having said that,I'm guilty of gently bumping the flat back of a mag or a Garand clip to "settle" things.Old habits!!!

Zero, unless it's for my Star model Super B and then only because the magazines are made for 9mm Largo and the Super B shoots 9mm Para.

Another magazine abuser. I think we have had other similar post lately.

How many times you tap the back of the magazine? How many times do you rack your slide? etc. etc. etc.

I only 'slap" the mag after I "rack" the slide. Guess I do not see the constructive nature of some of the posts lately. Oh well, the pay is the same and a lot of the questions/topics listed provide good useful information.

Yup. Zero times. Serves no useful purpose as noted above. I try to avoid pointless activities especially when handling firearms.

Depends on the magazine. It absolutely has an effect on some designs, especially older metal mags or mags with weaker springs. Some others, such as Glock, it doesn't seem necessary.

Can't help but imagine that a lot of military ideas would rapidly change if armies were once again led from the front instead of from the rear.
And slapping magazines would be the least of it.

I can see a certain amount of logic to it, with an M16 and an infantryman in the dark. Otherwise, not so much...

It is remotely possible, though unlikely, that the top round in a magazine could have been moved forward by something, enough to stick out, and prevent insertion of the magazine into the gun. Slapping the mag, banging it against your helmet (or other hard surface) is a way (though not a 100% positive way) to ensure the rounds are in their proper place in the mag, before sticking it into the rifle.

It was taught to grunts that way, for a long time. Don't know if they still do, or not.

It may NOT matter, but giving the mag a couple of wacks to (hopefully) insure all is well is a comforting habit that seldom causes any trouble, when done right.

No army in modern history has ever been led from the front.

Generals, Field Marshals, the King or the God/Emperor do not lead assaults themselves, personally. They may be AT the front, but they don't lead attacks, not since the idea that the personal honor & glory coming from being first in the charge went by the wayside.

The last thing I'd want to hear at oh-dark-thurty would be the crew bouncing magazines off their freakin' heads! Pardon me for thinking out loud again. Old age and I shall not be friends.
