So, are you confident with the 9x19 for CCW?

Just wondering what everyone's take is on the 9 mm as a CCW choice. Specifically, performance of the round and not the handguns which fire it.

How do you believe it stacks up against the .40 S&W, .357 Sig., .45 ACP? What do they offer that the 9 mm doesn't? And vice-versa?

Do you choose to carry a 9 mm for CCW? Why or why not?

I do have 9's I'll carry.

Daily carry, I prefer a .45auto because I trust the bullet more.

I compromise for capacity and carry the 9mm when there are illegal alien protests, agitated rallies or other grounds to consider the possibility of roaming angry groups that might want to pick a fight.

If I could hide a 16rd .45 auto the same way I can hide a 16rd 9mm, I'd do it though.

But day to day, 8rds in a .45 does me just fine.

What extra stuff?

I carry a .45 regularly; the only "extra stuff" for me is a spare mag carrier, which holds two magazines. I actually like that "extra stuff" because it rides by my opposite hip and helps balance out the load.

Depends entirely on the rounds I have at hand. More than happy to carry a 9x19 as long as I have some quality JHPs in the top of the magazine, with some heavier FMJs in the bottom 10. I dont think the chambering is itself insufficient, but the relatively smaller size makes bullet choice much more important than with the larger calibers.

ActivShootr...

... by training and habit, I carry an extra mag regardless of caliber or capacity. So, mag carriers may be "extra stuff" to you, but to me they are a given, unless I want a loose magazine banging around in a cargo pocket.

The bespectacled "back East" reporter was interviewing the marshall, . . . asking him about his weapon. His final question: "Why do you carry a 45?"

"Because no one makes a 46" was the answer.

My sentiments exactly, . . .

Besides that, . . . some of the new bullet gimmickery can cause a 9mm to expand up to 45 size, . . . but none of the bad guys have figured out yet how to make the 45 shrink down to 9mm :D

May God bless,
Dwight

For those who choose to carry the 9mm their answer should be in the affirmative.
For those who choose to carry a .40 S&W, .357 Sig., or .45 ACP should answer in the negative.

In actual defensive shooting, any of the four cartridges should stop a human threat in a reasonable time IF the shooter places the shots well.

I saw a post about the .50GI. http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307737

So now there is something larger than a .45. http://www.guncrafterindustries.com/model1_50gi.shtml

I carry a 9mm Glock daily.

I truly believe that shot placement, and a good defensive loading (Federal HST 124 gr) is a big plus. Would I carry a .357, .40, .45? Yes. For me, I shoot 9mm the best, and I trust it more than any other round right now.

Thats what it comes down to for me.

A head shot from any firearm is likely to be fatal. That said, I prefer my .45s, but both of them being out for service right now, I am very secure with my old, refurbished, Sig 228 in 9mm and Federal Hydra Shoks.

Nine Mil is a great round. I'm starting to like .40 more and more though. Hell, I carry a .380, but thats as small as I like to carry.

Nothing wrong with the 9x19. I carry my P2000SK in 9x19 sometimes....but then again I even feel comfortable when I only carry my little P32, which is what I've been carrying most of the summer.

I carried a Kahr PM9 every day, nine months (summer) of the year for three years. The remaining three months (what we laughingly call "winter" here in TX) I carried it's big brother, the P45.

For the last year or so I've been carrying the P45 during the summer and something larger during the winter.

That said, I haven't sold the PM9 :) and may carry it again.
Short answer: Yes, I am confident with the 9x19.

I think i can honestly say the smallest handgun caliber i feel confident about is the S&W 500.And ive not even shot one, just the numbers alone convince me.But i wanna meet the guy who carries one 24/7

Now i only carry .45acp as its what both my guns currently are.But like many here im on a path to collect 5 different guns for ccw,a size for every occasion.
1. 5" 1911 -own it.
2. PT745 compact .45 -own it.
3. 9mm compact - buying in 2 weeks.
4. 380 micro - 2-3 months away.
5. ???? .40 or .38? when ever i get the money but most likley a mid sized frame.

I cannot ever see me saying ill be buying anything under .380 for ccw, thats the lowest i could go caliber wise and feel somewhat safe.
9mm with +p is more than adequate imo.

I don't carry a 9mm but I would. Wouldn't worry about being "under-gunned" either. (When I carry, it's a 5-shot .38spcl)
