Smith & Wesson Semi-autos Survey

I have not owned any because of my expierence firing them. Most are more ammo sensitve and require a much higher level of care and maintence than do compeating designs. Most may be reliable if they are babied but are not when they are exposed to any neglect of abuse or harsh weather conditions. The 45's seem to be more accurate and reliable than the 40's or 9mm's. The 9mm's seem to be a hit or miss on being a good shooter with good reliability. The 40's I have seen have been trouble prone.

Every company makes a lemon or two but smith seems to have an orchard. Yes some glocks have failed I am sure. My Glock 20 had one type one malfunction once. My 21 or 31 and my old 17 never missed a beat. I went to an academy with pleanty of smith shooters and glock shooters guess who was cussing thier gun more for breaking and malfunctioning. I will give you a hint it was not a plastic gun.

I have owned a whole lot of pistols in my days but only one S&W. I own a blue CS45 and I liked everything about this pistol except for its trigger and its lack of accuracy. I called S&W and was told by them all I could expect was combat accuracy which it gave. I was given the same opinion by a range owner.

I am a stuborn Scot and took this pistol for a trigger job. Guess what? the trigger was the entire problem. It now has a great trigger and I can shoot it well.

I have fired several S&W pistols either belonging to friends or rental pieces. My thoughts are the 3913 is a great pistol, the 410, as some one else said, POS (we couldn't hit the side of a large barn at 10 yards with it), and lastly a new 457 belonging to a friend and it was a disapointment.

This 457 was new and didn't shoot well for its owner but shot very small groups to point of aim for me. The problem I had was too many jams. When I called S&W they said it isn't finished as well as their other pistols and the feed ramp needed polishing. I think the 457 is a keeper that needs the feed ramp work and a trigger job.

My overall thoughts are that I like S&W pistols and that on the whole they are under rated.

Regards,

Richard

Quantum Singularity, are you keeping score so far? Overall, the opinion seems to be favorable. I suspect that if you ran a survey like this against other gun makers, the pattern would be very similar.

The conclusion that I draw from this is that S&W pistols don't have to take a back seat to anybody. Regards, FUD.

Had two until that HORRIBLE boating accident in the Gulf of Mexico where my entire "arsenal" was lost. A 3913 and a 6906. Loved'em both. Not tack drivers but that's not why I bought them. I use to interchange slides occasionaly just for the fun of it. Made no difference in accuracy. And the mags from the 6906 worked like a charm in my KT P-11.

RKBA!

So far, so good for S&W. I would estimate 67% (2/3) positive reviews. Still, I see a disturbing pattern...such as the gentleman who reported 7/30 pistols had major parts break and were out of commision--the man then said his department lost confidence and changed brands. I think its safe to say that most S&W pistols will get the job done, but I see a relatively moderate amount of lemons too--IMO, too many lemons from a manufacture who wants a lot of money per gun. For those of you paying close attention, even "reliable" Smiths tended to need trigger work/gunsmithing in some cases. I think if we poll Glock, Ruger, or Sig owners, there would be less problems reported. But lets not just talk about it, somebody start a poll for those makers (Sig, Ruger, Glock, etc...) too and see who stacks on top.
