Looks like the Model 66 is coming back.

Return of the K-Frame .357 Magnum®
• Full Top Strap and Barrel Serration
• Ball-Detent Lock-Up
• 2-Piece Barrel

The K-Frame revolver is one of the most important innovations in Smith & Wesson history and was built specifically to handle the .38 S&W Special cartridge. Since its introduction in 1899, the K-Frame has been a favorite for military and police professionals as well as target shooters and enthusiasts. Today's K-Frame is available in .22 LR and .38 S&W Special.

ALL BACKED BY OUR SMITH & WESSON LIFETIME SERVICE POLICY.

Availability subject to applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.

So, would you buy a new Model 66 or look for one of the used ones on the market?

P.S.

I already have all the Model 66s I want.

S&W lawyer lock?....

If this new 66 revolver comes with a stupid lawyer lock, then I'm out.
It's a interesting concept but at $900.00 USD, you could buy 2 brand new semi auto pistols for the price.

I think I'd buy a new Ruger Wiley Clapp limited ed GP .357magnum. No security lock & Novak sights. ;)

So, what's the difference between this new version and a "real" one?
A local store and range has one in their rental dept.
It's a very nice shooter, but is a new one worth the $850 msrp?
What do used ones usually sell for, in vgc?

I've got a Model 19 that I bought for 350 bucks awhile ago. I would like a snubby 66 - just because I like snubby guns.

Maybe they will make a 9mm version - just to confuse me more.

"The Lock" and a two piece barrel assembly.

Someone on the S&W forum alluded to the two piece barrel fixing the forcing cone issues. I'm not sure how that would work.

Glenn, I'm sure you saw the other thread where they made the 9mm on the N frame. THAT confused me more.

I'm curious what effect the new guns will have on the used market.

I did but N frames are too big - thus I wouldn't buy one for my little hands. Now a 9mm 66 would be a temptation.

Talking to some IPSC friends - they see the new 9s as taking advantage of some USPSA rule changes - which I don't follow.

There's also the 4-1/4" barrel, which is slightly long than the 4" unit used on older models.

In addition, there's this little goodie:

Ball-Detent Lock-Up
Does anyone know for certain what they mean by this?

I'll be curious as to what the real price will be. The new model j frames sell for cheaper than the old models. Maybe that will be the case here too. As long as it's all stainless, it should polish up nicely.

None of the poll options hit what I think quite right.

"That's interesting."

Another option.

What the heck do they mean by "barrel serration"?

Probably means a lock up like Taurus uses -- a little ball and notch arrangement on top of the crane, instead of locking up at the front of the ejector rod.

To me this is far more interesting than the recently announced 380 Glock or the Remington 51.

Definitely intrigued. Maybe a new Model 19 next?

Watch the embedded video.

Look how fast they zoom past the ugly lock. Even they know it detracts from the revolver.

Why do they keep making revolvers with that stupid thing?

I'm not sure why what seems obvious to -ME-...
seems so lost on everyone else.

Smith & Wesson isn't building new products to impress people like most of us in these forums, and for SURE, most of the folks who hang out in the "Revolver" area of this fine discussion forum. Most of "us" know what we really like with Smith & Wesson on it, and most of us are shopping for older guns for a truckload of reasons.

Other folks simply have zero interest or less in buying used guns. Some folks think that -EVERY- used gun on the market was used to drive nails or as a potato masher for Thanksgiving. Those folks want *NEW* or they don't want it. They are worried that a used gun is simply 20% cheaper than a new gun because it's got someone else's "problems."

If Smith & Wesson used to make it, and they also make it now, I have zero interest in getting a new one from them. For many, many reasons.

I think it's neat that they are re-introducing a K-frame magnum! But I wouldn't buy a new one. There's lots out on the used market for me to pick from.

Got to say i'm planning on getting both the 66 and 69. i've got 3 k frame 357s and i'm planning to cc a new one rather than my old ones. Would sting less to have a new one on a shelf as evidence for months. Lock does come off pretty easily.

It has some disabilities, but I'm inclined to buy the new Model 66 anyway. The Model 69 is attractive too, but I really do prefer six shot capacity.
