Mike, the list (at ESOS) was last updated today shortly after noon.

From AmmoLand.com, List Of Exhibitors Boycotting The Anti-Black Rifle Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show

That's currently 234 venders; 39 Speakers/Celebrities and 48 other supporters. The show, the largest Sports and Outdoor show in North America, is run by the UK owned, Reed Exhibitions, and is scheduled to run Feb. 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA.

The single largest exhibitor is gone: Cabelas. With them out, there will be a significant amount of empty floor space.

On the other hand, the NSSF is calling for everyone to change their minds: Reed Exhibitions’ Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show Prohibits AR15 Style Rifles.

The celebrities backing out will hurt attendance, probably worse than the vendors doing so.

I'm amazed at the number of archery companies that have pulled out. Bear, Hoyt, and PSE are the ones I noticed. An AWB would in no way affect their business and yet they are standing with us.

Agreed. Glad my brother just bought a Mauler by Bear.

They're not all Fudds, that's for darn sure.

The NSSF doesn't get a kickback, but the NSSF does employ Reed to handle the NSSF's annual SHOT Show. The other issue is that a great many of the exhibitors are likely NSSF members. While we tend to think of the SHOT Show as the world's biggest gun show, it is actually the "Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade" Show. If one were inclined to be charitable, one might propose that the NSSF just doesn't want to see their members who DON'T pull out be hurt by low attendance.

Personally, while I could accept that as the NSSF's reason, I nonetheless do not approve of their position. I will (if I ever finish writing to legislators) write to the NSSF and suggest as diplomatically as possible that they find some other company to run the SHOT Show from now forward.

"One of the (many, many) things I don't know about this is the fee structure between exhibitors and organizers. I suspect that exhibitors pay a fee to get a table. With ~25% of the exhibitors bowing out, some of them will (almost undoubtedly) decline to pay their fee (if they have not already), or start looking for ways to get it back (if they have)."

Booths at this show run into the thousands - one smallish manufacturer was indicating that his booth cost him about $7,000 for the week.

Some of the larger companies probably pay in the tens of thousands for a booth for the week.

And, those booth rental fees are very likely already paid in full by virtually all vendors.

There is talk about lawsuits against Reed to recoup the loss based on the fact that they changed the rules at literally the last minute, but that's going to be hard freight to move for a company that doesn't even have anything to do with the core of the boycott.

On the other hand, the NSSF is calling for everyone to change their minds: Reed Exhibitions’ Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show Prohibits AR15 Style Rifles.
My answer to the NSSF would be - nuts.

Very cool that the manufacturers & the NRA are telling them to go pound sand!
Another bonus if it's like Vegas, Chicago, or Boston:
At a lot of these events they hire on a bunch of local union thugs to unload everything, set up the booths, & generally make the whole experience cost more for the venders.
A lot of those thugs won't be needed, or paid. Another bonus!

The withdrawal count is growing faster than I can count !! :p:D:D:D

also in PA , Philly, there is the case of a 5 year old who because of TALKING about a 'bubble gun' [shoots soap bubbles from the pink gun]
Immediately suspended , searched , and interrogated !! Please support the girl to stop this PC insanity.

While it may be 300-something exhibitors out of 1000 so far, the ones that pulled out are huge. I read that one of the exhibitors who bailed had something like 110 booths at the show. That is going to be a tough hole to cover up.

And NSSF needs to give Reed their walking papers for SHOT.

In that same announcement, it appears that the show is on hold. So I went to Reed Exhibitions and was shunted to the ESOS website (Home - Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show) where I found this (my emphasis):

Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show - Update - January 24, 2013

Reed Exhibitions has decided to postpone, for now, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show given the controversy surrounding its decision to limit the sale or display of modern sporting rifles (also called ARs) at the event. The show was scheduled to take place February 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA.

“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families,” said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. “In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.

“It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year’s show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing.

“ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”

Affects only a "small percentage" of the exhibitors, but the majority of non-firearm exhibitors, speakers, celebrities and other supporters that pulled out, we won't tell you about.

Nice bit of CYA there.

A BIG round of applause to everyone that forced this cancellation !

We must all stand together during these challenging times to protect the 2nd Ammendment !

(I live in Harrisburg PA )

If only Reed Exhibitions could apply their concept of "small percentage" to the events that drove their decision. Apparently they don't see the percentages of infringing the rights of countless law abiding gun owners because of mass shootings that are less frequent than a powerball lottery.

I'm just really sorry that this is going to have a huge economic impact on so many businesses and people in the mid-state area. I grew up only a few miles from the Farm Show Complex, and the impact that this show has in the area is substantial.

What has been nagging at me the whole time, though, is just who owns the show? As I understand it, the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs started it the better part of 50 years ago, but turned it over to professional management when it got to be too big.

Could Reed do something like this at SHOT show since they are the organizer?

From the NSSF statement:

.....Reed Exhibitions does, however, manage the NSSF-owned SHOT Show (though Reed manages the SHOT Show, all SHOT Show decisions, policies and actions are made at NSSF’s direction).......

added: for those that need a fix.... Early Bird Sports Expo starts today at the Bloomsburg Fair Gounds... 70 miles north of Harrisburg...

I am sure the local economy will certainly miss the show. It is funny how one statement results in the cancellation of such a big event. It will certainly effect many especially those who depend on such shows as a means of doing business.

Had they kept their pinion to themselves a lot of people would have not been effected. It certainly is not going to hurt the sale of firearms, ammo, or standard issue 30 round magazines.

All it takes is one event like this to force vendors and manufacturers to seek other means of displaying its wares to the public and businesses.
