Smith & Wesson Or Colt - Which Is More Aesthetically Pleasing To You?

I think all revolvers have their own specific qualities... This is a tough one. I like Genre guns. Colts are awsome film noir guns... The hard boiled Dick with a butt hanging from the side of his mouth, holding a colt detective special, cracking wise to the villian. And of course the uniformed cop chasing down a bad guy pulling a Colt official police out of a flap holster... Or the storekeeper defending his store pulls a colt police positive special from under the counter. I cant remember the name of the Bogart movie where he has a hidden compartment in his car with two guns... A detective special, and a police positive special.

On the other hand I like the S&W line too... The police detective with the chief special in a cross draw holster... The old cop pulling the 5" military and police from a swivel holster, the private dick wearing an old lawrence shoulder holster with a round butt model 10.

OK so I like movie guns... I think both lines have individual qualities. The Colts have classic flowing lines, while the Smiths look dangerous, and intimidating.

I own both... I like Smiths better... but thats personal.

Did someone say Half DOZEN?

Why do you need to choose? Pick them all...like I did. One is not in the pic, a S&W Pro Series Model 627.

Python in 4", 6", 8"
Ruger GP100 in 6"

My favorite is a 4" Colt Python because of the size, the styling of the ribbed barrel and finish.

Then again, this is a beautiful sight, too (8rounds of 357):

I do like the old colt double actions.;) Still, I'd have to say most S&W revolvers have no peers aesthetically, although some of the more recent designs ---------well, it will take something special to supplant the S&W's, looks wise for me.;)

Some may disagree, but I consider the Ruger Six series the best looking DAs of all time. Had a strong but sexy look to it

CDR Glock:

A couple of your Colts have what I think are Hogue wooden grips. Beautiful. Can you tell us what kind of wood? Pau Ferro? Gonco Alves?

And any comments about how you like the fit of the highly sculpted grips to your hand/fingers?

Thanks -

I do not care for the colt guns prior to the python. The python and similar, latter detective specials and the magnum carry are very attractive to my eyes.

Early i.e. 30's / 40's DA guns I really have always thought the Smiths looked better than the Colts.

If I had to rationalize it I would say I find the frame of the colt less attractive than the smith, putting some nicer details on it and the nicer barrel as on the python makes it look better. From a shooters perspective I still think the 686-4 is about as good as it gets looks wise, and shooting wise.

Pau Ferro. I like the feel. To me, I prefer the tapered instead of flared grips. The pistol is easier to handle for me, even with longer fingers.

SA- Colt all the way
Early DA- slight edge to Colt
Once Colt went to barrel ribs and shrouded barrels they lost it for me. They look too much like Rugers. Its S&W all the way.
Newer guns. They all suck. Wouldn't have any of them.

I'd go with any of the N frame Smiths...big and beautiful, and hell if you can't hit 'em with the bullets, you can club 'em to hades with the sheer wt. of the piece. All that notwithstanding, I've got a .22 lr Colt Diamondback that's as pretty a revolver as I can imagine and a 7-1/2" SAA that's got a great case hardening pattern. Rod

Both actually. Is that really an answer? :D

Picking up a 2nd series Colt Detective Special or a S&W 640 is purely contingent on the mood I'm in when I get out of bed in the morning.

Wow this is a tough one!

I mean who doesn't like the looks of a PYTHON!? That midnight blue deeper than the grand canyon, ventilated rib, I could go on and on. I'm also really partial to the looks of the older series detective specials that lacked an ejector housing and had tapered barrels. IMHO those beat the snot out of any J-frame in terms of looks, they just were the epitome of a snub-nosed .38, totally classic.

But Smith has had some real lookers too. I dig K-frames, especially the Model 10s and Model 64s. Can you say svelte? I also love the big N-frame .357s too. The Model 27 is one of the most authoritative looking firearms ever devised IMHO. And who can forget the Model 29? Talk about a silhouette almost anybody can recognize.

It's a tie with me. Some Colts look better than some Smiths, and vice versa.

Crappy picture of my latest acquisition, a .32 Colt New Police.

It's in VERY good condition except for a nasty chip bottom rear of the left grip panel.

And this is the first Colt I bought when I started buying them again, a circa 1968 Official Police in .38 Special.

Just realized that I don't have pictures of my middle one, a Police Positive in .32 WCF.
