Smith & Wesson Model 19

If you're gonna put rubber on the gun, take the grips off every few weeks and wipe it down under there. Rubber grips attract moisture. I have a 19-2 in near perfect condition, and while I usually go for rubber on a revolver over wood, on a nice blued S&W, the black rubber just looks awful to me. I had them on there for about 3 weeks, and when i finally switched back to the wood for appearance sake, there was moisture under the grips on the frame. Moisture will kill that nice blueing. Now i leave the wood on, and switch to the Pachmayr's when I'm going to shoot the gun.

"Rubber grips attract moisture."

No, rubber/synthetic grips don't attract moisture, but they don't let moisture that gets under the grip frames get out, which is, in effect, just as bad.

HOMER

Yeah, I agree about the trapping moisture under the grip, and
they do look less attractive than the wood grips that came from S&W.
I think of the Hogues as a slipcover on the couch, mom takes it off when company comes over.
My 19-3 looks likes its in a suspended animation, LCR on it and the Hogues, like a crinkled up old prune. Wipe off the coating and she's like new.
I have replaced all my wood grips with Hogues, while in the safe, or in the service of the Master.
Maybe I'll wear the wooden stocks when we are celebrating open carry in Illinois, or not.

Can you believe there is still one state that can deny a man the right to protect himself, family and property.

I stand corrected Mike. But all I know is that my guns sit in safe in a non humid environment, and when I took the rubber off the 19, there was mositure on the frame. Now I do the same with the wood, and it's dry. So I leave my wood on until it's range time, then put the rubber on.

Re: New S&W Model 19-3

Thanks a million for the info! Here's the rest of the story. My parents (close to 80) visited a couple of weeks ago. My father mentioned that he'd sold his 2 guns. One of them was a Savage 325C 30-30 that he'd had before I was born. I refinished the stock on it when I was in hjigh school in the mid 70's. Needless to say I was not pleased. He also sold a Winchester 1400 automatic 12 Ga. I already have the model 1200 pump version of that gun so I wasn't that attached to his. He got $250 for both guns. He sent me the number of the dealer who turned out to be a good guy. He sold me the Savage for $150. While I was at the shop I noticed the S&W in the case. He knocked the price from $495 to $450 and threw in a nice used holster. So without the benefit of any research I have the gun. Based on what I have read in this thread, I see that I made the right choice. I shot a dozen 38 rounds thru it this week and it felt great. Can't wait until I have a little more time to take more then a few shots! Cheers!

oldie S&W MODEL 19

I have an oldie 4 inch mdl 19,was a carry gun for a NJ detective.Bought it from his son in 1988...It has pinned barrel, cylinder recessed for cartridge heads, wide target trigger, wide target hammer.....just a little wear on the sides of the barrel from holster wear...also combat grips and is a great shooter....I use primarily 38 specials at the range...looked up the book value and its somewhere in the $500 range....its a keeper !

serial numbers with prefix # then letter

Why do some S&W frames have a prefix before the serial # ?
For example.....45k2215 instead of the entire # such as k570345 ...

I have several semiautos and revolvers in various chamberings, but if I could have only one handgun, it'd be my first handgun: a 6-inch bbl. Mod 19, counter-bored chambers, pinned bbl, target hammer/trigger. It was stolen, and 10 years to the day, I received a call from the local authorities and it was returned to me, (a week later) in NOTquiite the same condition as before, but a trip to S&W remedied that. Lottsa sentimental value. Love that Mod. 19. Wouldn't sell it at any price. Besides, IMO, it's the best looking revolver ever made, including the Python, which I'd love to own, but don't.

Here's a model 19-2 I just recently acquired

Just thought I would share some pics of a model 19 S&W I just acquired. I didn't know anything about it when I got it but I have fired a box of 50 through it and I have to say that it looks like a dream, feels like a dream, and fires like a dream. This is the best handgun I've ever had the joy of holding.
