Smith & Wesson Model 19

Shoulder rig for model 19

I just saw a nice SH. Made by Lou Alessi. I understand he passed away, but was wondering if anyone knew where to get one of his holsters? Not sure if this is the right location for this post either:confused:

Great gun! I bought mine new in Del Rio, TX in 1975 from a discount store known as Gibson's. It was the first 6" barreled M-19 I'd ever seen. At the time I was down from Dallas, visiting my wife and her family. I'd been going to Flt Engineer school with the old and lamented Braniff Airlines up in Dallas and living in a 28' travel trailer while there. It was parked in a mobile home park backed up to an old gravel quarry, where the excavations had filled in with water.

I'd brought along my Lyman 310 tool, some bullseye, primers and a sack of 158 gr SWC's. Evenings I spent studying and loading for the 19 as time permitted. After a short sighting in, I spent late afternoons hunting snapping turtles, moccasins and the occasional wayward beer can with my 6" blued steel beauty.

That gun is still with me. Both my son's learned to handle recoil with it, loaded for it, went off to college with it, and now covet it! With sensible loads it'll last forever. It's got snow in its hair now, just like me, and some add'l bluing wear on the muzzle from a series of holsters, but it's still a first rate shooter and one that I'd not soon part with.

Regards, Rodfac

My S&W 19-4 2 1/2" round Butt rebarreled by Bill Davis Co. to 4" Carried as primary and BUG on many an occasion. It's also pinned and has recessed chambers well worn definitly not a safe queen.

Thanks for the replies. Like that story, seems like you have a great old friend in your S&W. Also love the photos of these fine looking guns. As soon as I can load up pics, I'll post some......

6" S & W Model 19 Versus Colt Python

I've got a 6" blued S&W Model 19 of 1964 vintage in great shape. I've learned to shoot it quite well. I hear a lot mentioned about the Colt Pythons which I've only seen, never held or fired. I know the Pythons are quite expensive. So how do they stack up against the model 19? Are they significantly better? If so, in what regard? I've found a hole in the wall gun shop that has quite a big supply of them and know I can do some horse trading with.

19-3, 2.5". Goes everywhere with me. The stocks are Ahrends, and are perfect for my hands.

I also have 4" 19 and 4" 66's. Still searching for the elusive 3" Model 19.

Picked up this 19-4 with the box and PC Magna's for $200 out the door a bit over a year ago.

... and with Stag's and a Tyler T Grip.

This 19-5 w/ Elk Stags keeps the 4"er company.

I just purchased my model 19 today. It is the 19-5 nickle, 2 1/2 barrel, original wood grips. It is in excellent condition. I gave $475 for mine and the dealer threw in a set of Hogue rubber grips for free. This gun has an excellent feel and balance, can't wait to get to the range. I purchased it for concealed carry. Now I need to see what type of ammo it likes and what full house load to carry in it.

S&W K-Frame Magnums (Models 13, 19, 65 and 66) are known to have problems with flame cutting and cracked forcing cones if fed a steady diet of full-power 125grn Magnums. This problem is greatly reduced by using .38 Specials, lighter magnums such as Remington Golden Sabers, WWB 110grn JHP, or Speer Gold Dot short barrel, or full power magnums with heavier bullets (140grn or heavier). My 2 1/2" Model 66-2 (the stainless version of your gun) shoots like a laser beam with full-power 158grn Magnums and almost as well with Winchester's 145grn Silvertips. For carry, I use Remington Express 158grn Semi-Jacketed Hollowpoints and for practice I like a 158grn LSWC over 13.5grn of #2400.

This is my 66-2 although the grips have been changed out for coco-bolo non-bantam Houges since this pic was taken.

My first centerfire was a 4" Model 19, circa 1970. It did great on factory stuff, except the old SuperVel and any max manual loads of the day. Sold it and got a Model 27.

My 19-4 6" p&r with Spegel grips. The spegels are actually a bit small for a 6" barrel so I went back to some Hogue targets when I shoot it.

I hope to get better pictures as soon as I get my camera back from my daughter  I noticed that some of the early 19's had the stainless trigger and hammer, mine being a 19-5 has them blued, I tend to like the stainless better. I also saw an early one that had the stainless adjustable sights and ramp.

Model 19's did not come with stainless triggers, hammers, or sights, some model 66's did. You are probably mistaking polished stainless M66's for nickel M19's.

You are saying that you saw an early Model 19 (Combat Magnum) with a s/s sight(s)? I've never seen one but I freely acknowledge that I haven't seen everything. :o

I saw it on one of the online auctions. I know for sure about the ramp being stainless and I am almost certain the sights were as well. I am searching for the pictures. The thing is, it may have been another model S&W as I have researched so many lately.....Sucks to get old:confused:

I'm not saying you didn't see one but if you did, I'm certain it was an add-on, after-market deal-certainly not "stock" from the factory.
