Smith and Wesson serial number search

1FastZ - Model 37s usually don't command high prices, but based on the age and condition of yours, I'd say somewhere around $600 to $650 to the right buyer, more if you have the box that it looks like it just came out of.

Nice old Model 10

Hi,
Ive been lurking and learning here for a while and now I have a question. I stopped at my LGS to pick up my Talo 3-5-7 and my dealer had just taken in a Model 10 that he had not even finished the paper work on. It looks like in has never been fired and had 9 of the 1980's plastic USAC 38 rounds with it. Well I just had to have it and now I wonder when it may have been made? Any help would be appreciated. Serial # is D873XX.
Thanks
Tellico

Serial # is D873XX
1976-1977 serials ran D870001-D999999

i'd guess it was closer to first quarter of '76

iamtomstone..the semi autos are harder to date by serial than revolvers..
also anything after 1980 is harder to date as that's when smith changed their numbering system..

with that said..

in 1994 it lists a starting serial of VAMxxxx
in 1998 it lists a starting serial of VHN
certain prefixes were reserved..
thats all the info i have..maybe someone with better smith-fu
can add or clarify..

I am the newest member to Firing Line and you have possibly answered this question many times, but bare with we please. I have a Smith & Wesson top break 32s&w cal s/n267258. Will someone tell me when this gun was made??
There is an old family story of one of Jessie James boys was treated by my Great-grandfather and was given the pistol as payment. No proof but a good story. Hindsight

There were three different models of .32 S&W top-break revolvers using the same series of serial numbers, but only one had numbers that ran as high as yours, so it can only be a .32 Double Action 4th Model, manufactured between 1883 and 1909, with a sn range from 43406 to 282999.

According to Wiki, the James gang was most active from 1866 to 1876 but continued their activities for "several years" thereafter, with James himself being killed in 1882, so it's at least chronologically possible (barely), though perhaps unlikely, for the family story to be true.

S&W Revolver Date of MFG

I purchased a S&W 38 special CTG

ser. V 1380xx 72960

Just trying to figure out date of weapon and such any ideas if it is actually WWII pilot issue or not.

thanks,

ser. V 1380xx
The serial number dates it as a "Victory" model made around 1942/43 for the military.
As far as being issued to a pilot, I suppose it's possible. I would guess his only two options would have been that or a 1911. Or maybe a model 1917 if those were still available.
