New to this forum so I'd hope someone could help me out.

I acquired a S&W 681-1 .357 SN AUR9226 from my father in law who is retired law enforcement. He doesn't recall the year it was manufactured or in which year he received it. Was hoping someone could shed some light on the SN for me. Thanks in advance.

Actually, I find this to be one of the easier ones. :D
Smith & Wesson moved to the three-letter prefix on serial numbers starting in 1980 with the (then brand new) L-frame revolvers, of which yours obviously is. The 681 is the fixed sight version of the far more popular 686, and produced in WAY less numbers. In my travels, the fixed sight 581 and 681 revolvers would be considered "RARE" compared to their adjustable sight counterparts.

The book says that AVBxxxx was produced in July '87, and yours precedes that by a smidge. So early or perhaps spring 1987 is a very safe bet for it's production date.

The book also suggests a total production of the "Distinguished Service Magnum Stainless" to be at (approximately?!) 53,180.

Great revolver! :)

Thanks for the info very much appreciated. I planned on keeping this for many more years to come. Hand it down to my son some day.

Based on the serial number and patent date it's likely a 38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model (concealed hammer and grip safety). Serial numbers ran from 42484 in 1890 to 116002 in 1898.

As for shooting it, couldn't tell you one way or the other whether it would be safe or if commercially produced black powder ammo is even available.

Dating S&W 66 & 67

Hey all

Could you help me date a couple of Smiths I picked up today?

Thanks!

Model 67 No Dash 5K61917

Model 66-4 BRS9659

Thank you Jim!

Many thanks Jim!

The 67 is semi-early version then, correct? It came with the original box and looks cherry (all steel sights) :D

Hi folks.

I have a pair of K frames that I would like to know the approximate manufacture dates if someone would be so kind:

Model 17-3 in .22LR S/N 5K58###

Model 4-3 in .38 S/N K852###

Much appreciated.

DOB of an Airweight 38-2, # BRP35XX?
The book gets a little goofy with the three-letter prefix guns, but it's safe to say that this one is just before August, 1994.

1973 production. I'm sure it's a total sweetheart. :p
Model 4-3 in .38 S/N K852##
I'll go out on a limb here and guess that you mean a Model 14...
That'd be 1969 production year.
