Smith and Wesson serial number search

I inherited a S&W .357 magnum from my grandfather a few years ago. He had the gun for over 40 years that I know. I cannot find a model number but I find 2 different numbers on the inside of the cylinder opens.

S 164440
77286

Any assistance in dating this gun is appreciated.

Thanks,

Not too much info to go on, but in this case I think it's enough. First, the serial number of the gun is S164440 - any other numbers are called "assembly numbers" and are used to track fitted parts during manufacture but have no further significance. The "S" series of serial numbers was used only for N-frame revolvers from 1946 to 1970.

Your number would date the gun to the 1956-57 period, and there were only two N-frame .357s being manufactured at that time: the .357 Magnum Model of 1950 and the Highway Patrolman. These became the Model 27 and Model 28, respectively, when S&W started using model numbers in 1957. They're essentially the same gun with different finishes. The pre-Model 27 was the fancier of the two, with a highly polished finish and fancy checkering on the topstrap; the pre-Model 28 had more of a satin finish and lacked the checkering.

So, putting all that together, you've got a pre-27 or pre-28 from 1956 or perhaps early 1957. It should be straightforward to determine which, and either way it's a real desirable piece if in good condition.

Jumping on to this thread...

Similar experience as previous members. Grandfather passed a couple years ago and my Grandmother just gave me a couple of his guns. One is a S&W 4046 40 cal - VDV9296. Just looking for a mfg. date if possible. Thanks!

One is a S&W 4046 40 cal - VDV9296.

As has been mentioned previously, the serial number info available for semi-autos is limited compared to revolvers, but (and this is a bit of a guess) it looks like the VDV prefix would make it late 1997.

Manufacture date of 586?

Can someone tell me the manufacture date of my 586 no dash.

ADN53XX serial no#

Also there is no M or 2 so that tells me that there is no MOD or L frame improvement mod. However I've been told that if the 586 was built after a particular date then it does not need the MOD. So if I can find out the built date then that would help.

Thanks

1983.

The recall was from an issue involving only a few guns and with a certain brand of 357 Mag ammo.
The primer metal would flow back into the firing pin hole and tie up the action. S&W's fix is to replace the firing pin bushing.
If you are not experiencing that problem then I would not worry about it.

Any help with the date of s/n 1D19XXX would be greatly appreciated. Bought it at a gunshow today & it's in great condition.

Thanks, txmooseman
