Smith and Wesson serial number search

29-5 BJC-81XX when was this made?

I wasn't sure if the first digit was a B or 8. It seems that the serials have a three letter prefix though. Thanks for the help.

.32 smith and wesson top break was made. There is no writing on the revolver besides the serial number on the bottom of the handle # 184669
Assuming it even is a S&W, that serial number could be two different models.
If it has a hidden hammer and grip safety then it could be a 32 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model. SN's ran from 170000 in 1909 to 242981 in 1937.
If it's a double action with exposed hammer then it could be a 32 Double Action 4th Model. SN's ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.

29-5 BJC-81XX
1992.

S&W semi auto serial number data is very incomplete in the SCSW after 1993.
Your best bet is to call S&W's customer service. They will give you the DOB over the phone for free.

calling S&W

Thanks for the reply Jim. I read a earily post about calling their CS, so I called and called all day today, never could get anyone to answer, other than the recorded message.
I'm thinking 2002 or later on this gun, one of the papers that I got with it had a copyright date of 2002, it may or maynot mean anything.
I'll try again tomorrow and hopefully someone will answer.

RE: age of my S&W

Well perseverance paid off. I called S&W again this morning, got put on hold for about 20 minutes but got the information I was looking for. that paper that had the date was actually the DOB . So this 908 , as the CS tech said, , is not even a teenager yet LOL. Love the gun, best 350 I've spent in awhile.
Thanks

I just purchased a s&w 357 6inch barrel. I am going to purchase the s&w catalog but it is killing me to knw the year of my gun. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me.
I have a model 66 with a serial#aun0xxx

38 SPL M&P 4th gen?

I've read a good few post in this thread so I think I've got it narrowed down but would appreciate verification
Per the box it is a 38 Military & Police 5"
serial# 541977
That would make it a 4th gen 1915-1945. With the serial number probably late 30s-early 40s?
4th gens have the upgraded safety so it is safe to have all 6 loaded?
Don't use plus ammo?
Beyond that is there any safety concerns I should know as I regularly shoot it with a standard 136gr and have used it to teach my kids to shoot.
It was my dad's gun and spent most of its life in a leather holster in the top of the closet.
My best guess from the gunbroker, gunsamerica is it is worth 500-700 though I may be over estimating the condition.
Does having the box and cleaning rod increase the value?

Model 65-1

Hello everyone. I found this forum as I was searching for information on a S&W 65-1 that I picked up from a friend a few years ago. As I was searching, I figured out that I have an early model (-1) with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder chambers.

It is a 4" barrel model. It is in perfect condition except for the side plate, where someone engraved numbers and initials. I am trying to decide if I want to have it repaired by Smith and Wesson. They provided me a quote a few years ago of $200 to replace the sideplate and refinish the gun.

s/n 1D16XXX When was it made? Any idea on value?

Early 30's.
The 4th Change new style hammer block was in 1944. Prior to that if dropped on the hammer it could fire.
No +P.
It's great you have the box and cleaning rod and that adds more value but I noticed what appears to be some pitting/corrosion on the barrel so that will bring the price down some.

K frame 38 S/N is K 3164xx
1957.
SN's ran from K288989 to K317822 that year.
If the original barrel was 6" it would be a K-38 Masterpiece (pre model 14), 4" or less would be a K-38 Combat Masterpiece (pre model 15).

ser # S 580xxx
Could you double check that serial number. Make sure that 5 is not an 8.
S prefixes ran from S62469 to S333454 and S811120 to S999999.

See pic for serial number location:

I updated my post on the 65-1

s/n 1D16XXX

Any idea on value? I have the box, cleaning accessories, screwdriver, and original grip, which looks new.

Thanks Layton!

Early 30's means my dad wasn't the first owner. I may shop it around and see what I can trade for it, as it has no sentimental value to me. Again thanks for your information.

Thank you Layton

It was a 6" cut down to a 3" it just says esson where the ejector stop is on the barrel and that is about a 1/2 inch from where it was cut
