Smith and Wesson serial number search

It's a 6-shot. I see that some folks post the whole serial number and some don't. Would the rest of the number help determine a birth date?
With a SN of 520XXX and no prefix (such as D,C or K) it is a .38 Military & Police from around the late 1920's.

the serial # is S 8680xx
.38 Military & Police postwar.
Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.

I just bought a S&W airweight 38 SPLctg under the cylinder it says mod12-3. I thought it was a model 10 but not sure. the serial number is 5D577xx
The model 12 is the aluminum frame version of the all steel model 10, hence, the name airweight.
Serial number dates it to 1979.

Model 10-10
Serial CAR91XX

Model 10-5
Serial D3767XX
Serial CAR91XX = 1996.
Serial D3767XX = 1971.

I'm new here too. I just got a model 10-11 with a s/n CCS9668 - I don't care if you know the entire number. I'd just like to know its approximate birthday. Any help? Thanks in advance.

I have 3 S&W hand guns my late husband left me. I am curious as to dates and approx values, I intend to give them to my sons. One is a .38 special model 14-3 with a 6" barrel #3K46XXX. The next is a .44 magnum, model 29-3 also 6" barrel #AZ68XXX, and the last is a .9MM model 659 #TAA9XXX. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

.32 S&W 4th model

Hello all, I was just up at a family reunion and was able to come home with my great grampa's old .32 revolver. From everything I've been able to find on it, I'm fairly sure it's a Smith and Wesson double action 4th model. Since this model ran between the centuries (1883-1909) I'm wondering if I can pin it down on one side or the other since my understanding is that 1899 and earlier are "antiques" and 1900 and on are under modern firearm laws? Thanks for any help, the serial number is 1964XX.

Without knowing the condition I can only give an approximate range of value.
3K46XXX = 1972. $350 to $450.
AZ?8XXX = 1988. $500 to $650.
TAA9XXX = 1984. $300 to $400.

Mod 48-4 Ser# 5k915xx
1974.

the serial number is 1964XX
The book does not narrow it down any further. You would have to contact S&W and likely pay for a history letter to get an exact date.

EDIT: After doing some research I found that the serial number cross point for pre 1899 for your model gun is 209301 so it is a pre 1899.

Since S&W reused the same serial numbers on different models of guns, I need to know the caliber to determine what model it is. If it is a S&W then the caliber should be marked on the side of the barrel.
Also, is it a modern swing out cylinder or an older break top (barrel and cylinder pivot down).

S&W 38 Special

I have an older S&W 38 special 4 inch barrel. The serial number is 867178.
Can anyone tell me what model and the year it was made by this serial umber and description?

Thank you,
Tyson

Thanks for the help with the 118281 jim. I can find no indication of a caliber on the side of the barrel. However, it does read "Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass USA Pat'd Jan 24 65 July 11 65 Aug 24 69 reissue july 25 70 may 11 80 jan 3 82" on the top of the barrel. Also, it is an older break top 5 shot. hope that helps.

Okay, assuming it's a 32 and it has an exposed hammer the SN would make it a .32 Double Action 4th model. SN's ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.

If it's has a concealed hammer and grip safety then it would be a .32 Safety Hammerless 2nd model. SN's ran from 91418 in 1902 to 170000 in 1909.

thanks!

thanks Jim, I appreciate the information. All three guns are in pristine condition, now I can make sure they are insured right.

Hey all,
was wondering if someone wouldn't mind looking up the date on my S&W Mod 28-2 serial number n22383x on the barrel it says .357 highway patrolman, it was my grandfathers service revolver but he doesnt know anything about it, he handed it down to me a while ago just figured id try and get alittle info.

Approximate age?

I recently acquired a stainless 4" model 67-4 # cdt532x, it is in perfect condition, paid 400 for it.

Also just got a blue model 10-5 # d4806XX, it is in good shape, other than what appears to be a bit of holster wear on the end of the barrel. Paid 300 for it.

Both guns shoot so good it amazes me.
Any idea of the age of these 2?

Thanks,
Jim
