Smith and Wesson serial number search

.38 special number 3224##
I need a little more info. Does it hold 5 rds. or 6, and I assume you took the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt and include any letter prefixes (such as C, D or K) if any.

laytonj1...I'm totally confused now because my grandmother died in 1979 and she had it for a few years before she died. It used to drive her brother (my great uncle) nuts because he had 50 some odd guns and couldnt shoot as perfectly as she could with that one guns....she was a perfect shot. All of that set aside....how can it be that it was made in 1982 if she had it for atleast 5 years before that?

66-2's were made from 1982 to 1986. In addition, the AAA prefix started in 1980 with AAU coming in at 1982. So, the date is correct.
However, memories do fade...

You can reverify the date by calling S&W's customer service.

Off the grip butt and the number was on the cylinder/chamber which holds six.

No letters just that number.

Okay. That makes it a .38 Military & Police 4th Change.
Serial numbers ran from 241704 in 1915 to 999999 in 1942.
Heat treating began in 1920 at SN 316xxx, so your right around 1920/21.

JNM51xx is well past the 2004 cutoff on the book. You'd have to call S&W customer service to get the DOB on it. Free over the phone for just the DOB.
CHB72xx = 2003.
BHY79xx = 1992.
C1533xx = .38 Military & Police (pre model 10). Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.

some help please

I have an old service revolver that was left to me its a S&W model 10 5 with serial # D92xxx which i thought was odd.arent the SN's supposed to be 6 digits ? Its in decent condition and now lives in my gun case on display. any help with its history is appreciated. it was left to by a family friend who used to be a G&F officer. Thx in advance.

Serial numbers ran from D90001 in 1969 to D330000 in 1970.

Depends on the model and time era.
SN's could start at 1 and run thru to 999999 or, in the case with letters, have up to 7 digits (example: D999999 or ABC1234).

I've been reading the forum for awhile but decide to register to see if anyone could tell me the year my S&W was made. I keep it because it's easy to shoot. Only wheel I have..at the moment. I'm starting to like wheels alot more that clips now.
38 S&W. Special CTG on the barrel
bottom of handle 4D92XXX
cylinder or by 12621 MCD-10-7
Thanks for the help

Thank you thats that I found. Just wanted a second or "right" opinion. Guess it's not worth much but it's an accurate shooter. I like mag guns but this thing is ps reliable I'm looking at a 357 or 4 now. Just they co$t so much more. My buget is lock, Sprigfield ,Rugar range. The wheels cost more.

Help thanks....

Newbie here...

My Father just gave me his S & W...357 Magnum with a red tip 6 shot...short barrel...where on earth is the serial number? I am looking everywhere to figure out what model this is. Do all these revolvers have serial numbers?

where on earth is the serial number?
See pic. You'll likely have to remove the grips to see it.

649-7

Hi Jim.

Another one for DOB, this time an stainless Bodyguard 649-7

S/N CBB5xxx.

It says 38 spl in the barrel. Being a recent model I thought it would say 38+P.
I guess it handles a steady diet of 38+P without any problem. Am I right?

Thanks for your kind help.
