Sippin around the camp fire

I remember when Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon were the two most popular beers. 70s, lol. I'll have to try that Woodford for the rare occasions I do drink. 'Round here, people are partial to Crown Royal, Jack Daniels, & Jim Beam, myself included. I don't care much for Wild Turkey. Is there a valid distinction (which I have in my mind): American whiskey vs. Bourbon whiskey vs. Canadian whiskey? I understood Wild Turkey to be a Bourbon whiskey, whereas Jim Beam for example an "American" whiskey.... no?

FF, there are all manner of blends.

A year or so back there was a lengthy discussion of blends at the KimDuToit website. I guess it would be in the archives. Something like "blends + scotch", although bourbon, etc., was also discussed.

Bourbon whiskey, by law, must be made in Bourbon county Kentucky. The percentage of corn used is also regulated in order to be called "bourbon". With other whickeys, they are made elsewhere (even if they use the same materials and processes - which they might not).

My favorite hooch lately is Knob Creek, all you whiskey fans need to give it a try. It's the perfect burbon as far as I can tell. Im told another one called "Jeffersons Reserve" is an even better small batch whiskey. But at $52 a bottle, it's a tad high for me. ;)

I was pretty impressed with a bottle of Pendelton whiskey that showed up in camp last year. Canadian, and probably a blend, but very smooth.

"Knob Creek" is very good stuff. We usually drink the "Wellers" as it is more afforadable. I also like "George Dickel" 12 year old. I'm going to have to find some of the "Woodford" everyone is talking about and give it a try!:D

There is also one called Ezra B. that y'all should check out. It's unblended, though, so every bottle from a different barrel tastes VERY different. Good stuff.

Do any of you ever drink Canadian whiskey such as Gibsons Finest 12 year old. If you did you would forget who Jack Daniels was.

You talkin' 'bout Ezra Brooks Bill? It is pretty good whiskey. My wife's grandfather gave me a ceramic clown jug that was put out by them for a while (I really don't know when they made those). It's got the Ezra Brooks logo on it, and you poured the whiskey out of the top of the clown's head! I'm hangin' on to it in the hopes it might be worth something one day.

Indeed, but they just label it "Ezra B." now for some reason, or at least that's what they label the single-barrel bottles.
Oh, well maybe the stuff that has "Ezra Brooks" on the label is the blended whiskey. Seems like alot of makers out there are starting their own single barrel or small batch whiskeys to go along with their main seller. Jack Daniels and Jim Beam do it.

Me and Bill W....

Having drank more than my share by my mid twenties, I long ago hung up the mug and now walk behind the water wagon. Long before that, however, I stopped imbibing out in the woods and around the fire because I knew not my limits and yet still had a sense of fear. The result; images in my mind of me, addled and boozed up, falling in the fire, off a cliff, etc, etc. My campfire drink these days is usually black coffee.

Unlike many a reformed drinker, I'll take a non-alcoholic beer (which, yes, I know, still contains less than 1/2 % alcohol) when out with the wife or friends and prefer the offering from Guinness, Kaliber. Good and cold it tastes like Bass Ale. Or, so I tell myself.

When I did dance with John Barleycorn, I was very partial to Knob Creek or Maker's Mark, neat, and many, many pints of Guinness.

Gentleman Jack and coffee - when its cold...
Michelobe -full leaded version when it's not...
My favorite...Sangria margarita - 3 shots mix, 2 shots sangria, 2 shots tequila, 1 shot gentleman jack, juice of 1/2 lime, and a pinch of salt...make sure the guns are unloaded and in the case;)
