Single-Shots?

I have a H&R Ultra Rifle in .25-06 that I have used on whitetails.


Does anyone else use a single-shot (rifle or shotgun) for hunting?

If yes, which gun and what game?

Why did you choose a single-shot?
 
H&R Ultra Rifle in .223 for coyotes.

H&R 20 ga. w/ rifled bbl for deer.

H&R 20 ga for squirrel and rabbits.

It's just my personal preference to hunt with single shots. Not to mention you get a lot of gun for the money with these.
 
Fun Guns

I have TC Encores in several calibers and one HandiRifle single shots. I hunt with these at times. I almost never take more than one shot anyway so they work just fine for me. I enjoy shooting these guns. I grew up shooting single shot shotguns so its not new to me. Also its suprising how fast you can reload one if needed.
 
never used but considering

I hunt deer with a bolt action and have not fired two shots in over 17 years.
I hunt turkey with a pump but have never shot twice.
I have an encore 12 ga and Contender 45-70 and am considering going to single shots this year.
 
Hunting with a single shot?

Just love my Blaser K95 in 7x57.
Very accurate and knocks 'em down. Think about it, most of the time you only need one shot when you concentrate and make good bullet placement. Besides, there is something about hunting with a single shot rifle that makes it more exciting.....
 
Rossi .410

I'm planning on taking my Rossi youth combo with the .410 barrel out for squirrells this year.
 
Sure, I hunted white tail deer with Ruger #1 SS rifles for 10-12 years, mostly in 6mm Rem and .25/06. They were great but became a little heavy as I got older.
 
I got my Ultra Rifle because I wanted a caliber that was low recoil and I couldn't afford a bolt or lever at the time.

I am left-handed, so the single has an advantage over a regular bolt action that I have now. And, loading and unloading is fast and simple.

I have thought about one of the Trapper Deluxe 12's for dove.
 
I got a Rossi in 223 that has a 20 gauge barrel....I love it.
20 gauge for quail
.223 for coyotes

what more can ya ask for

Ruger #1's in .22-250, .30-06, .45-70, .405 which allow basically everything that walks. Also have a H&R in .357 maximum that I wouldn't hesitate to use on small to med sized game. With the right load I'd feel comfortable using it on some larger game also.

I love the #1's for thier classic style. The H&R was only bought for the chambering. Good guns but they just lack the class of the #1's.
 
Of course, nothing beats a single shot break action shotgun IMO. Only own one at the moment, an old Stevens 20 gauge, but I've probably put more shells through it than pumps and auto's combined. I've used it for duck, whitetail deer, rabbit, dove, raccoon and fox hunting. It also disposes of ground hogs, opposums, snakes, and any other small pesky things that may need to meet their makers......though I normally prefer just to use a .22 lr for those instances. Sadly it's currently out of commission :( I'll probably be buying a few H&R single shots sometime soon, just 'cause I like 'em ;)

Amen. I can waste money on a SS faster than any other kind of rifle.

Dakota 10, Martini and Hagn SS, Steven's Takedown, Rolling Block, Martini, a pastle of #1s, a stable of 1885s...

All on my wish list.
 
I started deer hunting with a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70 gov't last year and took a doe with it. I've also hunted with a single shot NEF 30.06 handi-rifle out west and took an antelope with it.

I don't know, there's just something cool about hunting with a single shot.
 
I started shooting/hunting with single-shots.

My dad has an old Remington .22 single shot that I hunted squirrels with (was certainly a challenge without a rear site), as well as a single-shot 20ga.

I hunt with an 870 now, but have still only needed 2 shots to get the 2 deer I've shot (1 shot each). If I can't make a good shot, I'll either pass, or wait for one.
 
My CVA muzzleloader is a single shot. Does it count? Not a cartridge arm but it only goes boom once before I have to stuff it again.
