Welcome to the Tribe......

My tribe is one of a very rare breed, the "Human" tribe.

In high school I hung out with the Honor roll guys, the cowboys, the preppies (remember those? before people really knew what punk was?) and the stoners...always good for an interesting time.

I ride motorcycles..teach MSF and such...fairly serious about this kind of thing...I ride HARDCORE Sport bikes..and ride with Harleys, Hondas, Ducati's, Beemers...etc I just pull over and wait for a while and have a smoke :D

I shoot CZ's, Taurus, Rossi, and have owned Beretta, Ruger, Etc..... I give any good gun and shooter the respect they deserve! Plain and simple.

Its funny being a "human", as many as there should be around these parts...they are just too d*mn hard to find.

Shoot well

Actually, I LIKE tribes. Republican vs. Democrats, Glock vs. 1911's.
Coke vs. Pepsi, God vs. atheism, Carharrt vs. Filsons, ad infinitum.
I'd defend the Divine Right of Kings if I thought there was an
intelligent arguement to be had by doing so. It has nothing to do with ego, brand loyalty, or a need to belong. It has everything to do with the joy of vigorous (and hopefully civil) contention and
the clarity of thinking that comes with having to defend your be-
liefs. If you have to throw in an inflammatory "sucks" or "bites"
to get things rolling so be it. I'm all grown up and can hold my
own (and keep my temper) in any instance of verbal sparring.
I'm not a bully though, I only pick fights with people my own
hat size:) .

Tamara,
Are you going to modify your Z3 so that "it rules" or is "it 'all good". :) Gosh that was bad.....but my thoughts on this whole tribe thing is that, we all have our different preferences. Some of us are leaders...(1911 tribe), and some are followers (you know who are you  ) But all in all, I would say that most of the people on TFL have fine taste in firearms, or they wouldnt be here. I love reading about tupperware explosions, slides cracking, sqeeze cockers, locked and cocked, S&Walters, condition 1,2,3, poly vs traditional rifling on pistols, some gun called a seezeee, and the list goes on. This forum in itself is great for sharing thoughts, educating people (esp the folks that post pics of guns with their fingers on the triggers, that breaks WHICH safety rule lol! ;) ). My log in name implies it all, I am a rookie and the amount or reading that I have done here as well as research in other areas has made me a more informed person! As a fellow gun enthusiest I would be happy to say that I like them all! Some are better then others, but we fail to realize or ask ourselves at what purpose was this gun built for! That in itself can lead to a whole nother series of replys. My theory of the tribes is that its just a PC excuse to get naked run around a camp fire and bang on drums hoowwllllling at the moon!

Peeeeiiiiiccccceeeeee Out!

Joined this thread late....
Tribalism...great word. I would say that the ultimate example of tribalism is the Mercedes-Benz owner. It's not for nothing that
M-B owners are at the top of all the Polls and Surveys done by J.D. Powers, Polk, AAA, CAA, etc as the most satisfied customers. I mean, who, after buying a car that costs as much as a house did 20 years ago, would admit that they made a mistake...Of COURSE it's the best car in the world. Much the same as a person that spends a month's pay on a Cherman handgun will always contend that he bought "the best". Human nature.
Hey, Tamara....have you checked out a Subaru WRX yet...?:D

RIGOR MORTIS.

I think that its all crap , really stupid and also sucks BUT honestly , sometimes there is some hardware out there that really deserves the COMMENTS that they get ( even when these comments are not really spelt out in technical terms ).

You know it when you feel it , I guess.

Its like putting your hand in your pants , thems definitely my balls and wiener , no need to check.

Bye.

Tribes

Humans, like dogs, are pack/social/tribal animals. We seek a place for ourselves, as well as a larger identity than ourselves --whether it be as owners of a specific car, a brand of gun, a fan of a sports team, or a chosen profession.

Our perceptions by their very nature are subjective. Different folks have more or less talent in expressing their own peculiar tastes. Thus, the creation of "X-Rules", "Y-Sux", and other such profound statements.

Just the nature of the beast. No man is an island. We are all a member of one sort of tribe or another.

Interesting thread.

I will admit that I use the term "rock" as a verb. I think many things rock, including French vanilla creamer in my tea, Bon Jovi, an amazing filet mignon done perfectly medium, a baseball triple play, tangy cheesecake, a close-up view of Mt. Rainier, and my Makarov, to name a few. These are things that "rock" for me.

The difference is that I am well aware that things which "rock" to me, may "totally suck" to someone else, and I'm okay with that. I'm not about getting into pissing contests over something that is purely subjective. Talk about a waste of time.

I love reading these gun forums because I get so many varying people's experiences, and from that I get educated. I am smart enough to discern between what is data and what is opinion, so I learn what I can and hopefully pass it along to someone newer than I.

In everything in life, we each have our opinions, based on our experiences or our preferences. As I type this, I realize that this is probably why I am absolutely DUMBFOUNDED at those people who just can't resist ridiculing homosexuals. It's just like ridiculing someone for carrying a .22 or a .25 for self-defense... It's not my choice, I wouldn't do it, but it's not my life, so why get myself all worked up into a lather over it?

And as long as this thread is dealing with brand loyalty, I will admit that I am brand loyal to two things: Toilet paper and paper towels. ;)

Shoeless

Well said, Shoeless.

Personal preferences in *anything* are based on emotions, and therefore pointless to debate, since they're always subjective.

Tribalism (or "Balkanization") is an unfortunate human tendency...the urge to pick a tribe and then stick with it to the death. Sports fans painting their faces and doing battle with other sports fans over a game of ball...this is not about sport, it's a stylized form of "going to war" against the other tribe. Harley owners ignoring all non-Harley riders, 1911 shooters sneering at Glock shooters, kids of one neighborhood picking fights with kids from a different subdivision...all those are tribal warfare, caused by the human tendency to endlessly separate and compartmentalize our social groups. That's why there will always be strife as long as more than three humans get together in a social group.

I like my Z3 2.8. It is a neat roadster. Does this mean that it "rules"? That Miatas, SLK's, S2000's, TT Convertibles, and all other roadsters "suck"?

No, it means you have never owned a Datsun 2000 Roadster, or you would know that the Z3 does NOT rule! And that all those others just, uh.... well, are probably fun to drive if you don't know any better. :D

But to be serious...

I have found it hard to have reasoned communication with anyone who uses those terms-"rule","suck", or worst of all,"rock", in any form as a verb.

Generalizing here, the reason for that is that those terms are most often used by people who do not know how to speak well, and therefore cannot be expected to think well. We think with words and pictures. Words for abstract thought (like love) and pictures for concrete objects (like apple). A person who cannot speak well betrays an inability to think well. The two are cause and effect to each other, a chicken or the egg kind of thing.

Some interesting experiments with prisoners have shown that teaching English is the single best deterrant to recidivism. (Under our present stupid prison system.)

Think about that the next time some poverty pimp defends Ebonics. Think about the correlation of our loss of liberty, more importantly our loss of citizens who CARE about liberty, and the degradation of our language. It's not coincidence.

i have glocks,hk's,para's, 1911's,ar's ,benelli's, beretta's , sig, walther's what tribe should i belong to
then ? i'm not an insecure person , just like to mingle with the rest. tribes are
the same as being racist if you think about it. you belong to one group and that group believe's
to be the only one that should exist.
THE FUNNY THINK IS WE ALL HAVE THE SAME THING IN COMMON GUNS..... what give's man?:( :( :(

But the REAL reason is...

People who have no faith in their own judgement need the affirmation of a crowd as in "after all, ten million Frenchmen can't be wrong".

Throught my years of dodgeing Darwin (some narrow escapes) I found, Whatever I have at the time that works is what I like...eg...my buddie is a Yamaha freak, lives, breathes, blue blood, and all,,dislikes Honda a lot, that's what I got. His Yamamaha went broke on a trip from Tulsa and he was happy to get a ride from a Honda. Another eg..different buddie, Chevy certified NUT,4wd of course, always running down my Nissan,,,Chevy got stuck in the middle of BFE and Nissan pulled him out,,he now has a tight lip about that.

This thread has outlived its usefulness. I would suggest that the originator eliminate it. Or, a responsible moderator do so.

When you buy a Glock or an HK or a Harley or a Honda or a Macintosh, you're not just getting a product, you're getting admission to the tribe.

Which is exactly what the various companies want. They want you to feel special because you own a X, they want that brand loyalty and go to extreme lengths to get and keep it. Glock sponsers 'Glock only' matchs, Sig has a magazine they send to people who buy a new Sig and send in a postcard Corvette owners always wave to each other on the road etc etc etc.

On top of that people really don't like to look stupid to them selves or others so will defend their choices, both good and bad.

I like what I have, Thats why I have it. In other words I shoot what I like, I ride or drive what I like, I don't give a rats A$$ if you like it or not, I can see you enjoy what you have and really enjoy watching you shoot or ride what you have, If it shoots straighter
(doubtful) good for you, If it goes faster Get your butt down the line and sit and wait for me or keep going if that makes you happy, I can't afford a bunch of guns to sit in this house that is paid for and my family is safe inside, I can tell you this for sure, When its all over I hope you have enjoyed life and each other as much as I have. :D
