SIG 228 v. CZ 75

I would like to buy a 9mm metal frame (alloy or steel) semi-auto. What are your general thoughts re the CZ v. the Sig. I have a 9mm SigPro with which I am very happy with but you can never have enough guns.

Depends on the use...

It sounds like the SigPro is your carry weapon, so the second one will probably do time at the range.

If that's the case, put me in the CZ75 camp. You won't find a straighter shooting tighter grouping 9mm without spending a heckuva lot more money.

If you're planning on packing the gun on your hip, get the 228.

Both are great guns, with the CZ favoring open carry and target shooting and the Sig being the better choice for concealed...

I personally own a Sig 228 and I don't believe a better gun could exist. It has had well over 20,000 rounds put through it at last count. Accuracy has never faultered. I have a very good friend who has a CZ and loves it. He says for the price you can't beat it and it will shoot anything. He wasn't kidding, he meant anything. He always shoots military surplus ammo, a lot of it corrossive, yuck. My Sig doesn't care for lead loads. It shoots them fine, but the rifleing is a little to tight for the lead bullitts. I hope this helps.:)

One of the best buys in handguns is a CZ75B. You will not find a better service 9mm for the money. My TZ75 is a better shooter but I believe it may be a fluke as others haven't been as lucky.

With all of this said, the Sig 228 is out of the class of a CZ75. It is simply a better pistol. My Sig 228 is accurate, reliable, and fits my hand like a glove. The downside is the Sig P228 lists for about $925 with night sights vs under $400 for a CZ75.

Rent both pistols, shoot them, and make your choice.

Regards,

Richard

CZ-75!!!!!!!!!!!

I've owned sigs, and yes they are quality, but they never worked for me. Too high of a bore axis (increase recoil and muzzle flip), and my 229 .40 jammed quite often.
Many VERY knowledgeable gunmen (Jeff Cooper, Garry James, etc) have stated that they feel the CZ-75 is the overall best 9mm of all time.
Of course, it's always "To each his own". Sigs are very nice guns tho.:p

The Sig 228 should not be confused with its cousin the P229. I recently discovered that although these two pistols look identical they are in fact very, very different. In fact internally they are completely different designs. The 228 and 226 are the best ever made by Sig and they are the same design.

Richard,

Where are you buying guns? $925 for a 228, wow. I paid $550 night sites, and high caps.

I have both the 228 and a CZ75BD. I got the SIG in 1997 and use it for concealed carry. I got the CZ75BD last year and use it for IDPA. The CZ is an excellent pistol with extreme accuaracy. I love SIGs but the CZ75 is an excellent gun for competition. No problems with feeding/extracting. Paid $325 for it with 10 & 15 rounder.

Bullitt, the operative word is list price. I traded a S&W Model 67 and Glock 22 with two high capacity magazines for my Sig P228 with two high capacity magazines and night sights. This was when the high capacity scare was on. I figure I gave $600 for my Sig P228. Then again I gave $375 for a new P220. Try and beat that. Regards, Richard

I`d go with the CZ-75, it`ll do anything the P-228 will do just as well or better for half the price. If you feel the need to spend more money try some of the fancier or competition versions of the CZ. Don`t let the CZs low price fool you! This is a recent thing, before the fall of the iron curtain the CZ-75 was widely believed to be the finest 9mm service pistol in the world and you couldn`t have bought one for the price of 2 P-228s. Those who bought one at these prices felt they were well worth it and considered themselves lucky to have one. Now that they`re available for 1/3 the price they used to bring, yahoo! :D Marcus

Marcus, have you shot a Sig P228? I doubt you would say the CZ75 is a better weapon than the P228 if you have owned and shot both as I have. Believe me I like my CZ75s but I am positive the P228 is a superior weapon. Regards, Richard

Are all 228's created equal ??

Do you guys think the proof marked German or West German 228's are any better then the American made or assembled ones ??

I have owned both and shot both, and prefer the CZs... but primarily because they fit my hand better and seem to point better for me.

The disadvantage of the CZ, for some folks, is that there is a longer trigger pull.

I find the DA/SA transition to be much smoother with the CZ. My scores in IDPA seemed to jump upwards (lower times) when I switched to a CZ-75b, and I've since changed to a CZ-85 Combat.

(The Combat is in the same price range as the SIG, so there's no price advantage.)

The only SIG I've got now is P-210, which is superb, but its on sale (on consignment) at my local gunshop. The European style mag release is a pain, and I want to shoot other guns in IDPA.

I believe that when the conversation turns to "which is better, a CZ or Sig", it is an exercise in futility because we are comparing two superlatives. It's like asking "which is better, a Ferrari 360 or a Ferrari 355", "a Mig 29 or F-18". All are excellent and capable of doing just about the same things. Except for price. I have owned a 228, 229, and a 230 (still have it), and several CZ-75's. My question is, as excellent a gun as the 228 is, how is it SUPERIOR?

Richard, I`ve shot the 226 and 229. They`re fine handguns, reliable and accurate but no more so than the CZ-75. The Sigs are good but I`m not one to go for hype and "what`s in". I`d compare the Sig and CZ to a Porsche Boxter S and a C5 Corvette. Some folks would much rather pay more to have the Porsche because of it`s " superior german design" despite the fact that the C5 will kick the Boxter S`s tutonic butt every which way from Sunday. Me I`ll take the Vette, and the CZ75. :) Besides 9mmLaw already has a SigPro and variety is the spice of life. ;) Marcus

Marcus, i am not a yuppie that has to own the latest toy that is vogue. I have owned sigs for the past ten years and if they weren't as good as I say I would have sold them. I remain solid in my belief that the Sig P228 is a better pistol for me. I am sure you and I will have to agree to disagree. Let the buyer beware and educated. How do we educate the buyer? Let them read this board, rent pistols, and choose for themselves. Regards, Richard

glockorama, the trigger pull of the Sig P228 in either single or double action is out of the class of any CZ75 I own or I have shot. The accuracy of my Sig P220, P226, or P228 is better than my CZ75, CZ75 B, or CZ75 PRC. The sights on a Sig are light years ahead of a CZ75 and I have never spent a dime to improve any of my three Sigs. I have spent money to improve the sights on my CZ75 and bought new grips for my CZ75 and PRC. Regards, Richard

I've had both and I honestly don't think that you could go wrong with either one. I'd give the CZ an edge in ergonomics and the fact that it seems slightly thinner than the 228, but these are just personal things so get whichever you desire because they are both great firearms.
