I guess I hadn't done enough research yet to realize that CCR wouldn't plate Al-alloy frames. That makes using Robar pretty much automatic for a number of finish-worn project guns I'd buy (Berettas and Sigs).
Yea, if my gun/parts are alloy or on the large size, I'd have to send it to Robar. Lucky for my wallet, that was just those two guns.
Everything else goes to CCR, mainly due to pricing. I've carried my LCP and J-frame very similarly (maybe more pocket carry on the LCP, which is say is worse than the ankle carry of the J-frame), and the finishes are holding up great. Hard to defend the price difference when both companies put out equally as good work.
Polymer guns, all steel guns, and then the occasional tub of parts are all things that I ship to CCR. My last work order, which I just got back the other day, included BDM stainless feedlips (which pit EXTREMELY easily) and magazine body screws, hardware for my Recover Tactical grips (to match my Ruger SR1911), and the grip screw off the Hogue grips on my S&W 629-1 (was trashed due to heavy pitting... just on that). Pretty much everything, at the moment, I need done... even though that changes as I buy more stuff.
I've currently got two slides and a barrel at CCR for their CP II finish.
They have done slides, mags, controls and entire guns for me without a hitch!
As for customer service, I just call in the evening. Mary is a peach to talk to and if my questions are too technical she gets Brad to stop whatever he's doing to talk to me.
And yes, it is a very small shop - Brad, Mary and their son Stephen!
.........here after Christmas, I'll have to revive it. My wife is having my FEG Hi Power done at Mahovsky's. Well, a gun guy friend of mine is doing the work, she's paying the bill. I hope it comes out as well as I've seen here.
