Shouldn't this guy be dead?

There are lots of veterans out there with extra metal in various parts of their body. I know it to be a fact that veterans (esp. while drinking) sometimes find themselves in wacky situations where crimes are committed...
If they can cut this guy up to get at "evidence" what is going to stop them from cutting up everyone with a bullet or two in them whenever they fall under suspicion in a criminal case?
"Yeah, you say you got those slugs in your gut in Vietnam but two months ago one of your friends may have robbed someone and an accomplice may have been shot... report to the hospital, we're gonna cut you open and have a look."
That does not sound right to me and I would be willing to bet that if the law wanted to carve you up to "recover evidence" it would start sounding like a bad deal to anyone.

Ya,even though it may be frustrating in getting the evidence and crime solved.It would set a bad precident to force a surgical procedure.Sometimes a few guilty have to go free to preserve our freedoms unfortunately.
