You're almost three times more likely to die from suicide than from violence. Latest numbers I saw from 2014 were 42,000 from suicide and 16,000 from violence.
You're more likely to die from suicide with a firearm than from ANY type of violent death. 21,000 deaths from gun suicide versus 16,000 deaths from ALL types of violent crime.
If you're really serious about not being the subject of someone attempting to take your life, best thing you can do is lock up all your guns so you can't get to them. After all, as you say, while the likelihood is low, the consequences are very high indeed!
