Should trooper be fired?

JuanCarlos, I too remember being asked if I belonged to an extremist org. and was given a list of forbidden organizations. In retrospect, I wish I had checked the "John Birch Society" block.:)

I would have thought that based on how he appears in that photograph, he is not "white" enough himself to join the Ku Klux Klan... He looks mexican or something.

I have to laugh -- I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to go about joining the Klan in the first place! (Maybe it's 'cause I grew up on Long Island and live in south Florida.) Besides, I'm of Polish and Russian descent -- do they take us?

My feeling is that sure, the trooper should have the right to associate as he sees fit when he is off duty; but I find it problematic that a person who possesses the authority to bring the force of law to bear on free members of society also wears his bias against certain segments of society openly enough to belong to the KKK. I think that a police agency should be entitled to uphold behavioral standards -- "conduct unbecoming an officer" should certainly include being a member of racist, bigoted organizations, if it can include associating with prostitutes and felons.

News on this has almost completely dried up. All I could find out is that he did not join the KKK. What he did do was register on a discussion forum on the internet. The knights order, which is affiliated with the klan. Now There have been some good points articulated here, but I cant get past the fact, and it is a fact, that the patrols own reveiw board says this guy has not shown any racist tendencies on the job. I can say that given some of the comments I've seen on this and other forums one could find reason to use membership here to bludgeon another with. I am not saying those comments are condoned here. Just that they could be used that way. I do know that lots of good people are finding themselves in disagreement on this. I can see both sides. However the fact remains he did nothing wrong. Now if and when he does then I say hammer him. Just like if someone goes to that pedophilia site hurts a child I say gut him like a fish.

Well, if he's just hanging out on websites, that's different. I think handling this privately would be a better idea- leadership over him would have a better idea if he could perform his duties impartially than I. Unfortunately now that it is so public, I agree with the other posters on how he becomes a liability.

But, he can still be a cop. Just transfer him to LA. :D

Heist, I agree, this thing should never have seen the light of day. His superiors could have couneled him and that could have been the end of it. Now that it is public it is probably not going to end well for anyone. In fact going public, in my opinion is what damaged the reputation of the Patrol.
