Shooter in Montreal - Dawson College (merged threads)

They'll be calling for us to tighten our laws, because they aren't capable of enforcing their laws. Obviously their gun restrictions don't work, so it must be our fault.

and George Bush!
George Bush doesn't care about French Canadians

:P

on topic: I am indeed worried that things like this give fuel to the Brady Bunch and their ilk. I've been arguing with Canadians all day on another forum, they keep claiming their country is so much safer due to their laws.. :(

Actually this is a good thing. Remember how Michael Moore made the huge deal about Canada and how things were so quiet up there and how handguns were verboten. Well, school shootings happen with or without handguns, and in countries other than the US.

If anything this could be great fodder for the progun crowd.

I think it's a bit callous to speak of this kind of violent act as a "good thing", and "great fodder". That's how the anti-gun crowd thinks.

It seems like the gun rights supporters are starting to think like the people they despise.

After researching the Canadian gun law history, the assault weapons ban, large capacity magazine ban, etc., was passed after a school shooting in 1989.
That incident was a lot like this one and the vast majority of Canadians voted for restrictions. Let's hope they don't fall for it again.

Sounds fishy to me. Manchurian Candidate? Naw, that's tinfoil hat stuff. Guess I'm just cynical.

If they would just spend a billion dollars on a registration scheme and then make it harder and harder for "regular people" to buy guns, this sort of thing would never happen.

Wait....

If they would just refuse to ally themselves with the US and stay out of Iraqi and Middle Eastern politics, then people wouldn't hate them and attack them.

Wait....

Maybe if they just cut their military WAY back so that far fewer of their people would even be exposed to learning how to shoot guns.

Wait....

OK, just make it impossible for Joe Average to every get anything like a CCW. We all know those kinds of people can just go crazy and start shooting people at any moment.

Huh. You think maybe some of their plans aren't working out? Well, then, OBVIOUSLY the only thing they can do is push more laws like those even harder! There can't be anything wrong with their basic ideas. They just haven't "taken them far enough yet."

That's what the British thought as well. Poor guys. Look where they are now. And look at their violent crime rate. Too bad rationality has no place in these sorts of discussions.

Some people just don't get it. Does listening to the Brady Bunch cause brain damage or vice versa?
"Jean-Paul Brodeur, of the University of Montreal's School of Criminology, said he worries that Quebec will be tarred because of several high-profile shootings in the past generation."
"I'm very puzzled," Brodeur said. "The place where people are the most strongly in favor of gun control is in Quebec," he said, adding that Quebecers are more opposed than other Canadians to the country's current military deployment in Afghanistan."

Personally, I see that if there had been one or a few lawful gun owners, this would have gone down differently. Mr. Mohawk would have been pinned down until the cops arrived.

Maybe it is a bit callous, but looking at an event from a personal point of view and a policy point of view are two different things.

As for using the tactics of the other side, why not. We may be right, but in today's society being right doesn't get you anywhere anymore. The ethical battle is different than the PR battle, and we need all the help we can get because we've been losing that for years.
