Self defense...how do you load your magazine?

I would normally have a all one type of JHP in gun unless in the woods. With my revolvers, 357 & 44 mags, I keep one speedloader filled with Castcores [hardcast flat tipped lead bullets] plus one or two speedloaders loaded with whatever HP I have in the gun.

With my autos I sometimes carry a spare mag loaded with FMJ's.
I don't think mixing loads in the gun makes much sense.

by caliber:
9mm, Win. SXT 127gr +p+ (the 9mm that thinks its a magnum)
10mm, Win. 175gr silvertips or Corbon 180gr JHP (either/or, not both)
.45, 230gr hydrashocks
.32, one of the few rounds I stagger. I load a Glaser blue in the chamber and the magazine with 60gr Cor-bons. My rational being, that if by some quirk of nature my Kel-tec does go off in my pocket, the Glaser is less likely to ricochette off the ground or fully penetrate my thigh and hurt someone else. Since the Kel-tec P-32 is the only gun I regularly carry in my pocket, I think its the only gun that warants the extra ricochette protection. I know, I know, safe handeling an all. I dont do anything stupid with it, but you just never know when something unforseen might happen.
.12 guage house gun, a pair of #8 feild loads set to come up first followed by 3, 3in mag OO buck. But stock shell holder with a mix of bukcshot and slugs.
.223 "bug-out" Ar-15. bottom 2 rounds are SS-109, the 2 above that are tracers, the top 26 are also SS-109. When I see a pair of tracers, fire one more shot (to take care of the one smart guy that "knows" that means I'm empty) and swap mags without ever running compleatly dry. If a head pops up while swaping mags, i still have a live chamber.

It depends.

In 9mm I use 15rds of 115 gr. Silvertips, though I've used Starfires of the same wieght when I can get them. Same ammo in the spare mag.

If its a .45, I'd opt for 8rds of 230 gr. Federal Hydrashocks, with 2 spares of the same. If its my .45acp revolver same load with 12 more on moon clips. Though I have a kick ass 200 gr fmj FP load that sometimes makes an appearance.

If its a 44 mag, either 6 240 gr med. velocity lead swcs or 6 240 gr soft points (depends on what I'm hunting)

.380 95 gr. hardball or 90 gr. hydrashock.. whatever I can afford.

.25 acp hardball only

I never mix ammo.

I just kind of stick it in until it goes click. :p

Seriously, for a home defense load, Hydrashok Personal Defense, .45 and 9mm (in order of preference.)

For practice, S&B.

Neat idea, making the next-to-last-round a tracer (or whatever) to indicate you're almost empty...

On-topic: I never have staggered rounds in the mag - I make 'em all the same. Golden Sabre top to bottom. I subscribe to the notion that the bullet really doesn't do much unless it hits the right spot. In that sense, I focus much more on practice - on the move. I don't expect the adversary to stand still while I take aim, control my breath and sloooooowly squeeze the trigger to hit the '10-spot'

Carrying Glock 20/29 makes it almost a no--brainer from what I read - Winchester Silvertip 175 gr.

:D

However, it is 35 degrees, windy, and raining so moving to Arizona sounds pretty good right about now!

Please rethink your decision.

Unlike Boston, we don't have many sidewalks here.;)

"Self defense...how do you load your magazine?"

You rang? Sorry it took me so long.

In my Glock 17L I have 3 Federal 115 gr. 9BP followed by 14
Speer 124 gr. +P Gold Dots.
Spare mag is 12 Speer 124 gr. +P GDs and then 5 IMI Samson 115 gr. black tip +P FMJ.

pack hydrashocks in either the 239 or kimber custom, depending on what im wearing. after reading up on federals new efmj i think im going to swith over next time i buy some ammo. anyone currently using the efmj? if so how is it working out? is the expansion really that much more consistent?

That's easy.

I put "bullets" in my "clips".

Oh sorry. I meant to say I put "cartridges" in my "magazines".

HS JHP in the .45 and Silvertips in the .32
