Scaring Kids a Bad Strategy

The way I see it the guy had a chip on his shoulder regarding open carry and was daring others to question his right to do so. That's not the way to win over nonbelievers and those afraid of firearms.

He should've been quiet and nonchalant about it and if anyone asked about it he should've just said, "I'm a peaceful man and would never draw my firearm here except to protect the innocent parents and children here".

Donato, how do you know that this is wrong? Is it because you've never seen someone open carrying discreetly? If so, it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, don't you think?

Some famous person, I forget who just now, said, "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

Please let us know what evidence you have for such a sweeping statement.

Most folks that open carry do so in the proper scenarios and in a manner that does not draw attention to them

Show me the supporting evidence for this - particularly the "Most" part. That's at least 51% of all those who OC.

You've got to be kidding.

Do you know that 44 states allow open carry? How many of these dunderheads do we hear about? It's pretty obvious that they are the tiny minority.

^^^this. If OC is so irresponsible, why is it then that Texas gun rights advocates are trying so hard to get OC legalized in their state? Hard for me to grasp that any pro 2nd Amendment person would publicly proclaim that any faction of legal gun owners are for the most part "irresponsible". There are many types of firearms that I do not consider necessary or appropriate for me. But as a gun owner, I support the right of others to possess or own them if they are legally able to. As a hunter/sportsman, there are techniques or ways of taking game that do not appeal to me, do not fall within my ethics or the laws of my state, but I support the right of other hunters to hunt those ways as long as they are legal where they hunt. Always thought that was kinda how things work.

And donato once again proves my point. He doesn't approve of open carry so no circumstance is appropriate for open carry.

I have open carried and my son open carried for over a year and still does on occasion. Neither one of us makes a show of carrying, we draw no attention to ourselves, we go about our business, and so far no one has sounded the alarm, caused a scene, or called 911.

If you look suspicious, act nervous, draw attention to yourself, act like an idiot or an jerk, of course that will draw negative attention to yourself. That's why responsible gun owners that choose to open carry act in a manner that draws no attention to them at all. If someone sees your gun and raises an issue remain calm, act responsibly, and answer questions. There is no need for it to become a huge issue if you act within the law.
