Savage praise

I have two of them. a model 11 like yours and a Model 10 sierra. Both in 308.
Getting ready to put a 243 barrel on the model 11 and give barrel swapping a try.
So far I like them both. The Model 10 is the better gun though.

The Model 10 Sierra I picked up brand new from Wally world for $299 this winter. It must have been floating around some warehouses for a long long time. I think it was manufactured in the late 80's.
Never know what you will find.

The 10FM Sierra is the action I used for my 7-08. Found one online, it happened to be in 7-08 with the 20" barrel. I only bought it for the action, but couldn't resist putting some rounds downrange while waiting to re-barrel.

Thing shot sub-minute with 150 SMK's (not in the factory stock, tho). I almost didn't want to re-barrel except I need more velocity than I could get from that 20 incher. Even being a light contour, because it was short and relatively stiff it didn't shift POI despite the unintended use as a target rifle.

I think it weighed around 6-1/2 pounds. I don't hunt, but if I did it would be the one I wouldn't mind toting around all day.

So much hatred for a superior design

I think it pretty much comes down to price snobs or maybe the unsightly barrel nut. Either way it is not the best rifle for the money. It is the best rifle. Period! The money isn't a factor in it's success.

The first rifle I ever bought for myself was a model 116FHSAK (Weather Warrior .300 Win Mag, Accutrigger, Adjustable Factory Brake). I loved that gun, that's what got me neck deep into shooting and handloading. Unfortunately I had to sell it a couple of years ago to fund a cross-state move.

I just went through the process of picking a new rifle and for me it was between Savage and Remington. I went with a Remy 700 SPS Varmint ONLY because out of the box it had everything I wanted, heavy barrel, no brake, good trigger (no Accutrigger, but the X-Mark Pro is workable) and a better stock IMHO. I just picked the rifle up today, so I haven't gotten to the range yet but it's going to be tough for it to stack up against that Savage.

I have experience with 3 Savages. The first one was a package gun. It was a good basic rifles, but shot ~ 1.5" groups at 100 with match factory fodder.

That was traded for a 10 with the HSPrecision stock and a Super Sniper 16x. This gun always shoots .5" or better @ 100yds for me.

I then bought a 12 BVSS. It shoots .6" groups at 100, but more load work should improve this. This one shot .75" OOTB, but bedding improved it.

Swapped out my 1st savage barrel yesterday. Man that is super easy.
Turned my model 11 308 into a 243 win in about 15 minutes.
From what I read even changing bolt heads is easy.
From now on the only non military bolt gun I will buy will be a Savage.:)

Took my Savage 11 out for a test drive after the barrel swap.
When you consider. Its a thrown together load, in a used factory barrel, In a package gun stock with a cheap scope.
It shoots pretty good the 1st time out.

Savage----Won't buy anything else.

Model 12 FVSS- 223,,308
F-class- 6MMBR
22-250- Model 111 accutrigger
243 Axis Camo
all shoot tiny groups always. even that cheap Axis:)

Hey COZ a tip from a long time Savage reloader, and someone who has owned many of them. Savages are bullet picky by nature, while some bullets are hit and miss (ballistic tips, SSTs, Core-Lokts...etc) all of mine thus far like Sierra Game Kings soft points, they have been like clockwork even a basic Savage is capable of 1/2 MOA performance.

all except

Very positive for the most part. I guess there's 3 Savage rifles in the house (2 centerfires and 1 .22 rim) and all are very accurate. The Savage Scout went back for a new front sight and the correspondence and turnaround time was first rate.

But...my MarkII .22 TR has the cheapest 5 rd mag I've ever seen, and I've had trouble with 2 so far, and there going to have to do something with #3 as well.
They (customer service) keep sending new ones though.

Thank you, Savage

SAVAGE, is not only worth my time, but my money. Would like to list names but suffice to say that they have great contacts to communicate with. .... :)

Would also add that they support many shooting programs; one in particular, is our Hunter Safety Education. ..... :)

Be Safe !!!

Beautiful rifles guys and great groups. I personally wish I had got a .270 now. .308 ammo is expensive and hard to find in my area.
