Savage or Remington

Out of the box, Savage.

Personally you couldn't give me a new Remington without also giving me some cold hard cash to go with it. I'm not a Remington fan for their bolt actions.

SPS vs savage

I bought a new SPS in 204 Ruger a few months back. With factory Hornady ammo it shot 3/4" groups at 100 yds and with a hand load 32 gr Ballistic tip I got a 1/2" group. The trigger sucked. Attempted to adjust the tirgger and that went bad, as the factory had locked the trigger adj screw with something and I stripped out the allen head.

$120 later that guns is waiting for good weather with a new Timney trigger. Hope it shoots good and confident that it will end up being a nice firearm for prairie dogs.

Question I have is, why buy a gun without a good trigger? The accutrigger is great. I have a Savage 12 with one and it is perfect---probably spoiled me. And that old 22-250 shoots darn nice groups.

why buy with out

a little bit cheaper

i got my stevens with is a savage without the accutriger for $320 with rings and bases and plan on putting a timney in it and a stockys thumhole stock and will still be under $600 bucks when done

Savage, well built, very accurate (more accurate than Rem from what I've seen) and Remington's owned by Cerberus, an investment company, and from what I've heard about the new Remingtons and Marlins is that quality's down and they just care about max profits rather than quality.

I wouldn't buy a M25 Savage over the Remington 700. I don't know much about the 25 but I don't think they are as good of shooters as the M10 Savages. I think the M25 is just a beefed up version of their rimfire action.

I've never found where the Savage is that much more accurate out of the box that an average shooter could tell the difference. I like Savage's as well but I agree with Scorch they are ugly. If I could change barrels out as easily on a Remington as I could a Savage I doubt I'd own any.

This........

You Savage guys crack me up. How many of you that responded to this have owned a Savage 25? They look like a revamped Savage 340 to me.

That being said, I own a Savage 12 FLV in 204 and a Remington 700 VL SS Thumbhole also in 204. They both shoot tiny groups, neither better than the other. Pick the rifle that fits you the best and go with it.

You're kind of comparing apples to oranges: the Savage 25 is basically a reworked rimfire action, lighter-weight barrel, etc. (I'd get the new synthetic model for even less weight); the 700 Rem. action is closer in scale to the Savage 10 or 12, and the SPS Varmint contour barrel is 26" and heavy. Cabela's stainless specials in that model Remington are arguably a better rifles than the blued ones (and not much more, if any, $.) Of course, you'll probaby want to eventually change out the X-Pro trigger and maybe the stock (I did on mine), but it's nice to know there's a world of "hot-rod" parts out there for the venerable 700.
But, to make the decision easier, just go out and buy a C-Z 527. Many dealers, such as www.budsgunshop.com are now selling the walnut Varmint model for about the same as the pencil-barreled American. Best deal on a great-shooting .204 out there.

I didn't really want to get in this discussion..but...after I got to thinking,(which is really a stretch for me) I have a Remington 700, that I wouldn't take any Savage for, and I have a Savage that I wouldn't take a Remington for!:o:rolleyes:;)

SAVAGE

Price, Quality, accuracy. Period.

Target2.jpg

Savage BTCSS .223
200 Yards (10 Meter Airgun Target)
69gr Sierra HPBT Match
.010 Shy of lands
IMI Brass / Remington 6-1/2 Primer / Fully Prepped Neck turned and sized brass.
Fired from Harris Benchrest Bipod

The only thing I did to this rifle was Pillar and glass bed using Devcon 10110 and replace the recoil lug with a precision ground one.

You say that like its no big deal glass bedding a rifle stock isnt exactly a walk in the park......

This thread is so full of **** I had to put on my hip waders before coming in here.

Savage is quality yes, but most people think Savage and immediately think about the Model 10. That is not the rifle this guy is considering. People just blatantly come in here and chant SAVAGE SAVAGE SAVAGE. Then there's a guy who shows us his target and all he had to do get the rifle to perform that way is change the trigger, re-bed the stock, change out some components for custom made government think tank components, and cure cancer. All this to a gun that isnt even the gun the OP posted about so its completely irrelevant! Its as if he came in here and said "I am looking at a Chevy cobalt as a performance vehicle, what do you think?", and you reply with "Well I have a modified Corvette that runs 10's so I'd buy the Cobalt since they are both Chevys":rolleyes::barf: in that order.

Not to mention he is shooting handloads that sound like he is doing everything possible to improve accuracy. While I have nothing against that I think its a bit of a stretch to say "Look at what my savage does, yours will too." Most people don't go to that length to get accuracy, and if they do they aren't the people coming on the forum asking if they should buy a budget Savage or a Remmy 700. The savage he is looking at is built on a modified rimfire action. Unlike the Rem 700 that has yielded results for years. Granted Rem recently seems to be focusing on other avenues of the shooting community but thats for another thread.

All joking aside this guy wants a comparison btw out of the box shooters. I could show you hundreds of custom rem 700's that will put 5 rounds into a quarter at 200 yds but that's not going to help the OP make his decision. If you were talking Savage Model 10 or Rem 700 I would say its a wash and up to personal preference. But with your given options I would say go with the Remington.

If you will go back to my first post you will see that I made my recommendation based on, wait for it..............................out of the box shooters.

Gee, isn't that what the original question pertained to? I'm sorry that you got your feelings hurt over many of us not recommending Remington, but honestly there are many better and less exspensive guns out there. Remington is riding on yesterday's reputation and not worth what you pay for them, in my opinion.

I'll agree that certain Savage products are out of the box shooters, not all.

You are attempting to say that to all Corvettes are "fast", but what you are really pushing is anything Chevy.

My post was more towards those whose posts consisted of "Savage" and "Yeah, Savage" and ":Grunting and heavy breathing: Savage" and the guy who's modified Model 12 is a Testament to the Savage model 25...

OK friend, sorry about thinking you meant more than you seemed to.

Without knowing which model it's hard to say for certain, but in my expirience Savage has Remington beat for an out of the box shooter any day of the week. Of course there may be a bad Savage out there, as well as a good Remington. I think the odds favor the OP finding a good Savage over a good Remington, out of the box.

I would never consider a Corvette fast, or even quick, and I don't drive Chevy. ;)

My very first 22 back in 1975 was a Savage,it was the worst gun I ever purchased jam after jam with very poor accuracy.Ever since then it's been Remington rifles and shotguns with great success...
All of my 700's shoot sub MOA

Remington is not the same company it once was... I had two guns that were both problem children... Remington is sending me a NEW 870 Wingmaster to replace the POS Wingmaster I sent back to them.. They didn't event try to fix it... My R700 CDL in .243, they put a new barrel on it and replaced the entire trigger mechanism. Both of these should be returned to me shortly.. Hopefully they will work like they should... Buying two brand new turds really sucked...
