Savage 340 30-30, why am I so intrigued by this rifle?

I ordered this stock from Gunville.

340A American walnut unfinished

I plan on inletting it for the scope mount, getting rid of the barrel band, moving the second action screw to the rear of the trigger frame and floating and or bedding the barrel. I can always reverse all of these mods and go back to the original stock, minus the scope mount.

I have never floated or bedded a barrel so I need to learn all about this.

Also, should I touch the barrel and receiver up with cold blue? I have never done that either and I wonder if it will hold up. I clean/oil my rifles after every range trip.

The only thing different about the E-version is the lack of the half moon cutout on the bottom of the stock and I think the stock is also cut down on the left side for the factory scope mount. It shouldn't be too hard to fit one of these to your earlier rifle.

Thank You! I wanted the Boyds but went with the Gunville stock because its already fitted and $15 cheaper.

I like the laminated look of the Boyds better though. Not that there is anything wrong with Walnut though :D

Williams Gun Sights and the USPS delivered and quick! I ordered this Monday, Williams shipped it Wednesday, USPS delivered to my box on Saturday!

I can't believe they still make sights for this old 50's model rifle that doesn't really carry a huge following. Kudos to Williams for looking out for us.

My dad died in march and me and my brother layer out the guns he picked out what he wonted and I picked out witch ones i wonted well the only one we really had any disagreement was the 340 lol I looked at him and sead but I let you have the Winchester lever 30-30 he let me have it lol

Its been in the family a while it was my grandfather's it shoots very well and we'll it's cursed.

You can hit AND THING with it heck I hit a ground hog @ 200 yards in the head with it. BUT BUT... if it has horns you will miss every one has dropped does left and right with it some of the most AMAZING shots EVER taken in the woods when it was a doe. Every one has a tale also about that BIG buck that they missed with it too ..... including me a nice 10 pointer that I had never seen ever in the field where I hunt missed him ..... and never seen him agen. .....

This one is going to be a range toy now but who knows, when I go hunting, I'm libel to pull anything out of the safe.

Parts are rolling in. The Williams FP-340-TK sight is mounted, fits perfect, might even work with the stock front sight but I ordered a Marbles front "dove tailed" ramp so I can fine tune it with some Marbles MR series sights or even a Lyman globe.

The Sun Optics scope mount came in as well. The Gunville stock is due in any day.

First trip to the range was a success! I knew I probably couldnt get it zero'ed due to the front sight was too low but I needed a base line to order a new sight and mission accomplished!

The old Savage pulled to center and 10" high(at 50yds) with only 3 shots/3 adjustments of the Williams.

With the FP-340-TK bottomed out I'm still 10" high at 50yds but the rifle groups tight, within one inch, on 180g Core-lokt(all I had right now). I would think on some 110g ballistic tip ammo it will be very accurate.

It was the hit at the range today. I was ringing a 18" gong at 250yds with no hold-over(figuring in how it shot at 50, I just held it right on) and I hit it 10 out of 12 rounds! Everyone wanted to look at it, a couple wanted to shoot it and I obliged. All agreed its a shooter! Hardly no recoil and very quiet.

My next step is to measure the front sight and order a base and Lyman globe to put me back to 1/3 from bottom on the Williams.

The Gunville Gun Stock came in today. It needs a little work to get the action to fit and its going to get floated and inleted for the scope mount.

Finish will be linseed oil

Stock is nothing fancy, but it should serve you well. I'm sure it'll look quite nice when you get it finished. I'd say you're having quite a bit of fun with your new project.

And it doesn't fit right out of the box

No big deal though. I didn't want to inlet the original stock for the scope mount or float the original. Not that its worth anything its just I like to be able to reverse whatever I do to a gun if I can.

So I'm getting into re-loading and I have been searching for some 125g FMJ pointed bullets for target(might even go cast at some point).

My LYMAN manual calls for 32g of RX15 but that looks like a hot load for this single lug bolt. Any suggestions?

32 grains is the starting load with RL15 and 125 grain bullets by my data, I sure wouldn't try reducing it. There probably isn't much pressure with that bullet as it'll have a pretty small bearing surface compared to traditional FP & RN bullets. If you want to reduce a los H4895 is about the only powder I'd try that with, but I didn't have any data for it and 125 grain bullets in the .30-30 Win.

I have a Springfield 840 which is nearly the same thing as a Sav 340.
It cost me only $75 in 2005, but the scope mount cost $39.

I have never shot it. I may rebarrel it to 25-35 and shoot it.

pic above same as link below

I guess I don't understand the question, as I don't know what crimping has to do with anything? My answer is, yes you can use any .308 diameter bullet. However, many .308 bullets may not work with your 340 depending on what you're trying to do.

With most spitzers to get anywhere near the lands you're going to have to load the rifle as a single shot, the exception being the 140 & 160 grain FTX bullets by Hornady for the .30-30. To get some spitzer bullets to fit the magazine you may have to trim the necks so far back your seating die couldn't crimp them anyway. Getting most spitzers to fit in your magazine is going to require a long jump to the lands, which may or may not give you acceptable accuracy.

You can for target shooting, your 1:12" twist will like bullets under 150 gr (125s work very well). Don't expect top accuracy, though, due to the long throat in your rifle that was designed for flat nose/round nose bullets. Just remember for hunting to use bullets designed for lower velocities (such as the Hornady FTX).
