Savage 340 30-30, why am I so intrigued by this rifle?

Be sure to keep an eye out for extra magazines, as they are
really hard to find, but when you do find one, they commend
a handsome price if the seller knows what he has.

I found that Williams still makes a peep for this rifle. Even with target knobs. Steep at $90! I wonder if the front sight will work or if I'm changing that as well.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me, compared to the price of adding a scope to your rifle. The scope mount + the D&T by a gunsmith will easily eclipse the cost of the sight. Then you have the added cost of rings and a scope, unless you already have that in your parts drawer. I do think you'll be able to use the current front sight, but if you have to change it out and its dovetailed in front heads are pretty cheap.

Here is a source for Savage 340 magazines.

Try "THE GUN PARTS CORPORATION". I bought the correct mount there a few times over the years. It was very popular to put it on the Carcano rifles. I still have a Carcano I put one on a few years ago. It is a sheet metal stamping, and may have been made by Savage. I don't know. I always stay away from Weaver and other after market side mounts. They always seem way bigger and more complicated than they should be.

I ordered the Williams part #1304, FP-340-TK peep sight.

But will it work with my front sight?

My front sight is a one piece, two screw, no dovetail, sight.

I have a drawer full of front sights but nothing that looks like it could match up height wise with the Williams.

Thoughts on how to fix this?

I would love to scope this rifle but I don't think I will go through the hassles of getting that done

I guess i will just mount it up and bore-sight it and see how far off it is, go from there. The Williams peep looks like its low to the receiver so the factory font might get me close. If not I will try to find a dove tail base and then figure out which height blade I need.

I cant wait to get some range time with this old rifle!

The scope mount is ordered

The Williams FP340 TK peep sight is ordered.

I plan of setting this rifle up for both.

As you can see by the following pic I will need to drill and tap for the scope but the peeps should be fine. I will also have to mod the stock for the scope mount.

Which leads me to my next question;

Should I re blue the metal and refinish the furniture?

Best to take it to a pro or can I do this. What do I need?

I just picked up a Stevens 325-C, predecessor to the Savage 340. It was just something I grabbed on impulse, I dig stuff like that and I only paid $135 for it. Might have to grab one of those peep sights for it.

Nice 325!

I just wonder where the value of these rifles will go?

Should I re-blue/re-finish or leave it alone?

I have to mod the stock for the scope mount, will that hurt the value?

I bought this to be a range toy, it won't get hunted with unless I'm real impressed with it. I will mostly be ringing gong with it.

Thanks. I just like unusual guns like that. I have a couple bolt actions shotguns too.

I imagine the value will go up, but not quickly.

Since you're gonna drill and tap and inlet the stock for a scope mount, might as well refinish the gun. It could maybe hurt the value but it won't destroy it.

I don't think you'll see the value increase on these rifles, there just are too many cheap accurate rifles on the market today. Plus there aren't that many people interested in bolt action .30-30 rifles. Fix it up the way you want, they'll pretty much always be a cheap truck gun.

Sounds like good advice! This is my winter project along with a Winchester 290 trigger job. I have a few weeks to think on it for inspiration

Grew up with Savage 340's in both 222 Rem and 30-30 Win. My brother used the 30-30 for deer hunting. It is not a bad rifle. If you want one, I'd scratch that itch. I doubt if there will be great re-sale value even in 20 years.

I bought one last weekend Rimfire. Just cleaned it up tonight. It had some copper fouling but cleaned out nice. Can't wait to shoot it!

I have a Williams peep on the way and a Sun Optics side mount scope rail on the way.

Merry Christmas to me :)

Just take it to a gunsmith to D&T the receiver, don't try and tackle that job by yourself. I'd also have him add the rear action screw and get rid of the barrel band, like that link you posted shows. I wouldn't braze it on, but find a guy who can TIG weld it. I'm not familiar with the trigger at all on those rifles but if possible I'd drill the rear tang to accept a rear action screw if possible.

340 savage

I am sorry I didn't find this thread earlier.I have a 340 in 30-30 and there is another here in Maryville,Tn chambered in 225 Winchester.Sportsmans warehouse has mags for them, had to replace mine last year.I found this guy cheap several years ago and it had been hacked up to mount a scope but had no scope.I got a mount from B-square and it fit the holes perfectly.Put on a cheap Simmons scope and have a $150 gun that will shoot sub 2" groups all day long.Even with a sling and scope it feels lighter than my 30-30 levergun.I personally handload a Speer 130 gr in it with a max dose of Varget and it does better than factory ammo.

I plan on it! getting rid of the barrel band, floating/bedding the stock looks easy for this rifle. And stocks are available. I only wish Boyds made one for it. I have access to a Bridgeport at work but I plan on letting a pro do the scope mount. I have a MIG welder and have access to a TIG so I might tackle that one myself.

Mine has two mags with it! They look to be NOS. I can't wait to shoot it. Unfortunately I do not hand load....yet!
