S&W Shield 9mm vs. Springfield XDS 9mm

The biggest friend to the 9mm is political correctness. I grew up in an era when the only way anyone under 6'-2"' would be a State Trooper in the area where I lived was if they were special forces in the military prior to applying for the job. If you couldn't hack the small arms selected, you found another line of work.

Today making sure a 5'5" 125 pound lady can master the same weapons platforms as a 6'-30, 230 pound man is more important than effectiveness. The other part of this is nefarious in nature: There is a move afoot to nationalize all police agencies in this country.

It makes me no difference one way or the other but there is a lot more to some agencies switching to the 9mm than effectiveness. Some are going back to the .45 for what it is worth. The .40 is still an excellent choice as handguns go.

In a CC gun, i would lean toward the 9mm since it's easier to manage from a small frame but I would would try a .40. I'll take a 180 grain JHP over a 9mm all day long in this imperfect world we live in where you don't always get to choose shot placement over getting the first lick IF we are talking full size. I hate small guns that have recoil akin to what would happen if you grabbed a yellow jacket nest-----a snub .357 comes to mind.

That's funny, especially to me as my go to gun is an SP101 with a 2 & 1/4" barrel. I have been known to use Magtech 158grn .357 rounds in it. You most definitely know when you pressed the trigger! I remember having the checkering of the grip imprinted into my hand.
FWIW though, it was fully doable if you don't mind your hand stinging a bit.
As an aside, I recommend using 125 grn ammo in that gun. ;)

I know what the compact is, but can you tell me what the difference is between the M&P9 and the Shield? Thanks. :)

The M&P and M&P compact have double-stack magazines. The Shield has a single-stack magazine.

Am I the only one who would like to see a Shield in .45ACP?.....esp. if it used 1911 or 3rd Gen S&W mags?

Just think of a thinner compact and you have the idea.

The shield is close to the same size in height and length, just thinner.

I'd say that puts it into perspective. Kind of the size of a Colt Mustang, but in 9mm?

I prefer the XDs, it just fits my hands better and I prefer the texture. They are both good guns. Get the one that fits and that you shoot better.

Funny how this turned into a caliber war...
